Style of play I can live with if the "W" is there....hell nobody is complaining at Butler and that sure is not a fast paced game over there....I think if you are a good coach and have the right players for your system it doesn't matter what style of play you have you will win and thats what it all comes down too....you win and everybody is happy :-)

Speaking of the Colonial Conference, what about Bill Coen of Northeastern? Wasn't he a candidate after Fran left? He has done an extremely good job in a tough conference at what many people consider a hockey school. The CAA is something like 24th in the RPI. It is far from "a tough conference" currently. That it took the conference sinking to those depths before Coen could finally win it does not instill confidence. Not just this year. Go back and look at their history. Northeastern was competitive during years in which Old Dominion and VCU were very good.

not only am I thinking we should stay clear of former Siena connections for our new head coach......................but also not get involved with former candidates that we might have either interviewed or considered in the past selections..........IF we didn't like them at that time, why should we feel differently today..........while it can always be a "concrete" reason they didn't like a particular guy before, it can be more of a gut feeling or comfort zone that it is not going to work...............not too often in the business world do they reach back to former candidates, not saying it is impossible, but that person would have had to be exceptional from the onset, and made the initial decision so difficult it literally was a coin flip................I do not get that is what happen in any of the instances with the formers we have run through the process before!!!!!!!!!!!! You've got to be kidding. Because the administration made an awful decision after Fran left means that they shouldn't reconsider the really good candidates that were passed over? That logic doesn't make any sense to me. BTW, Fran was passed over for Paul Hewitt the first go around and we all know how that played out the second time. I believe the scenario was Fran was interested after Paul left............but it was not so much that Fran did not lose out or in better terms less qualified, it was more that Fr. Toal was getting his Bona guy Lanier as coach come hell or high water.................just sayin' it can be very hard looking at those they deemed not worthy in the past a second/third time...........and yes, good post that coaches do develop and get better, but does that push them to the top of the food chain against others in the mix..............if they were on fringe of getting the job the last time, obviously that changes everything, if not then they had better done a complete 180 to make them standout "no brainers"...............none of those previously mentioned fit that criteria at all, some success, but not unreal program meteoric climb, in fact some had success then had struggles..............do we want to risk having that at Siena?

A few comments:
1. Fran interviewed the year Paul Hewitt got the job (1997).
2. With a 20-11 record going into tonight's game vs JMU, Coen's seven year record at NU is 111-110. This is only his third winning season (one prior 20 win season and one with 19 wins).
3. By way of comparison, Matt Brady is 86-81 in five seasons at JMU and 159-131 in nine seasons overall.
If there is no interest in Brady, I don't see why there would be interest in Coen.

KS, thanks for clearing that up..............can you tell what the circumstances were for Fran not getting the job at that time, he was a head coach compared to Hewitt who was only an assistant or how far did Fran get in the whole process? ??

would be great if we could find a guy like Bob McKillop of Davidson..............too bad at 62 he isn't likely to entertain a move now, although he is a NY native!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can't give you an answer. At that point, Fran was an assistant at ND, having left Lehigh a year or two before. Perhaps his having left a head coaching position was perceived as a negative - I really don't know.

I am no more an Albany fan then a Siena fan...but taking a step back and looking at it....it is sad to think with all our resources that Albany, for the past three years at least has the best all around basketball program (Men's and women's)....by far the better overall athletic department....hard to believe

Pitinos season just ended They'll get invited somewhere, no? What kills me is 148 teams make the postseason and Siena hasn't gone in 3 years. I don't have to go to the NCAA tournament each year but to be done by the first week in March three years in a row is beyond pathetic. If the next coach has a pulse he will likely have the team in the postseason in year one.

Saying they are "by far the better athletic department" is delusional.

I hear ya...just pointing it out that the one thing we had over them for all the years was basketball....and I don't think that part of the statement is that questionable....team for team they whip us in every sport and are far superior in the secondary sports...granted their budget being a state school makes that a little unfair, especially from a mid major level
