Looking at their numbers, players, how they did in game #1, etc..
I actually question if this Xavier team is gonna be a top 25 team long term this year. Not sure they have enough 3 pt shooting in their rotation and they lost their big shotblocker who kind of anchored the strength of their D last year which was 2pt defense without fouling.
Don't get me wrong Xavier looks like a great team and better than us but I'm not sure about the top 25 by the end of year based on what I see.
These guys seem to be all about 2pt offense and 2 pt defense. They didn't force a lot of TOs last year (did in 1st game though).
Saints can't play defense like they did 2nd half vs. American. Siena fouled and gave up too many easy 2s. Saints will get murdered if they do this. This might be a team you zone. Have to keep them out of the paint and off the FT line.
They can be beaten from deep on both sides of the ball though I think. Threes might help us equalize this one out some.
Saints just can't allow them to get a head of steam going towards the rim. I'm afraid if we try for too many offensive boards...we'll get murdered in transition. Saints need to dig in big time.

Game is on YES Network Friday at 7pm... Using Sagarin Xavier would be 17.5 point favorite...Vegas line probably around 14-16
Xavier is projected by most publications to be top 3 in the BE and most have them in the top 25.
Good for Siena to get a game under their belts before flying to Cincinnati tomorrow.
This will obviously be a huge challenge but it's not like going to Duke. Stranger things have happened.
Xavier likely starters:
Leighton Schrand 6'2, Sr. Paul Scruggs 6'4, Jr. Quentin Goodin 6'4, Sr. Naji Marshall, 6'7 Jr. Tyrique Jones, 6'9 Sr.
Hopefully Xavier doesn't start shooting well. They struggled last night against Jacksonville.

They struggled last night against Jacksonville. They only shot 33% from three last year. Scruggs shot 37.5% and only 2 other guys who are now gone shot better than 30% last year. Their best shooter (42% shooter) graduated and their 3rd best transferred down. Marshall 27.7% and Goodin 29.8% shot high volume threes but sucked at them. If Scruggs doesn't shoot well from 3, they probably ain't making many. This is one of those scouting report match ups that, if you do it right, you might be able to pull out a shocker if you go all out to stop the 2 pt shot and make some threes. Saints need to play the drive and not overextend on defense. Might want to almost ignore ball screens. If they want to take the 3...maybe you let them unless it's Scruggs.

I'm making the 3hr drive from So. Indiana. Hopefully I'll get to meet some of you. I'm an old guy sitting in the "Siena section" and will be wearing a white Siena hat and an ancient green Siena sweater. Don't have high expectations but the least I can do is support my Alma Mater no matter the outcome

Just a thought on Friday's game: this is set up perfectly to be a trap game for Xavier. Coming off of an easy win then having Missouri(SEC) and Missouri State(MVC favorite) after Siena could cause an overlook of the game. Obviously if the team plays like they did in the second half they'll probably get blown out but if they have the energy that they did in the first half for the full 40 then they should at least be able to keep the game competitive

I'm hoping that the last 10 minutes of the game are meaningful, unless Siena is up by 28 again. If Carm & Co. somehow snag the W here it could be one of those wins that launches the program off the pad to D1 relevance.

All the Xavier fans talk about in the Jacksonville game thread is how they can't shoot. I would love for Carm to put a solid game plan together and steal this one.
They're gonna be tougher and more athletic overall. But, we have some athleticism of our own now. Siena might actually have a chance here with a solid defensive strategy.
A little warning: The first time I see someone try to go over the top of a ball screen I'm probably gonna verbally throw up.

I'm thinking the best case scenario is that Siena keep it close and competitive throughout instead of the 20 point thrashing the X fans are predicting. We'll certainly give them more of a game than Jacksonville did. But make no mistake, they scheduled us as a tune-up. Big East teams aren't in the habit of scheduling buy games they think there's any risk they will lose. Pickett and Burns will probably be the only guys we have that belong on the same floor as these guys. It would take a Herculean effort on our part combined with an unusually bad night for them to win at the Cintas Center where they don't lose non conference games very often. Hard to believe these guys were not too long ago on our level playing in what is now the Horizon League.

Men's Basketball 12/23/2002 Xavier Survives Upset-Minded Siena 96-88 Dec. 23, 2002 Romain Sato broke out of a season-long shooting slump and scored 33 points as #21 Xavier (7-2) held off several rallies from a stubborn Siena (5-3) team in front of an enthusiastic 10,671 fans in Albany's Pepsi Arena Monday evening. The Musketeers led an explosive first half, with six lead changes, 50-42. West poured in 15 and Albany native Lionel Chalmers chipped in 12 of his 16 before the intermission, including a rim-rattling breakaway dunk that gave Xavier the eight-point advantage. Siena's point guard Tommy Mitchell matched Chalmers output with 12 points to pace the Saints, which led by as many as seven in the early going. The Saints came out strong in the second half as well, cutting the lead to a single point three minutes in. Austin Andrews connected on back-to-back threes and by the 16-minute mark, Siena had four players in double figures. Romain Sato answered with back-to-back threes to provide Xavier with a cushion mid-way through the final stanza. Sato, who entered the game shooting just 19% from three-point range on the season, converted 6-of his-12 attempts from beyond the arc. Siena continued to battle, forcing the ball to the inside, and after freshman Michael Haddix scored seven consecutive points, the home team trailed by just five with three minutes left. Haddix finished with 21 to lead the Saints. Prosper Karangwa, who ended with 17, then trimmed the lead two just three with a breakaway layup to bring the partisan crowd to its feet. Sato again had the answer, however, drilling a three from the top of the key to push the lead to six. Sato trotted back down the court with a finger on his lips silencing the crowd. Both teams were red-hot from the floor all night. Siena converted 51.6% of its field goal attempts compared to 48.3% for Xavier. David West finished with 21 for Xavier but was matched all night on the opposite end by Siena's young frontline. Andrews (12), and Mitchell (12) joined Karangwa and Haddix in double figures for the Saints. Anthony Miles had 10 as the final member of the Xavier quartet to reach double-digits. ........I'll take an effort like this again tomorrow without another Romain Sato sighting..... The place was rocking that night but he always had an answer

Camper, Harris, and Carey are long and athletic enough. King is gonna be outclassed size and strength wise but if he makes his threes, he's still useful. A solid gameplan and a typical off shooting night for Xavier and Siena could be in this one if Siena brings their A game.

Just watched the Xavier game from the other night and KK you appear to be right on. The 3's they hit were either in transition or there was a collapse by the defense. A lot easier said than done but a big focus should be trying to get their big man, Jones, into foul trouble early. We all know that's what they intend on trying to do to Burns as there is a huge gap between him and Sammy but it'll be harder for them to do if Jones is stuck to the bench. Gonna need Sammy to be really productive while Burns is subbed out and they must limit second and third chance points just like they did on Tuesday. I'm not expecting a win but hey, ya never know

Xavier is not only beatable but they’re only a few years removed from the Mid level when they played in A10.
Yes, they have better athletes, overall recruiting, talent but Siena is very capable of beating them even if they were full strength.
I expect a good and close game.
