Just watched the Xavier game from the other night and KK you appear to be right on. The 3's they hit were either in transition or there was a collapse by the defense. A lot easier said than done but a big focus should be trying to get their big man, Jones, into foul trouble early. We all know that's what they intend on trying to do to Burns as there is a huge gap between him and Sammy but it'll be harder for them to do if Jones is stuck to the bench. Gonna need Sammy to be really productive while Burns is subbed out and they must limit second and third chance points just like they did on Tuesday. I'm not expecting a win but hey, ya never know I don't think Xavier or its fans are expecting Siena to be the 150 or so ranked team we're pretty confident we are now with Carey and Burns added. Outside fans will see 267 last year with a lot of personnel losses and a current ranking around 230. So we can sneak up on them some. This Xavier team has more the look of an around 60+ ranked team on paper rather than top 25. Big East will chew you up and spit you out if you lack perimeter shooting...no matter how good you are inside and on D. Could make things more within reach. Maybe Marshall improves but Goodin looks like he is what he is. Do not extend your D with these guys or you will get murdered. Let them shoot. You have to pick your poison vs. an up team.

Men's Basketball 12/23/2002Β Xavier Survives Upset-Minded Siena 96-88 Dec. 23, 2002 Romain Sato broke out of a season-long shooting slump and scored 33 points as #21 Xavier (7-2) held off several rallies from a stubborn Siena (5-3) team in front of an enthusiastic 10,671 fans in Albany's Pepsi Arena Monday evening. The Musketeers led an explosive first half, with six lead changes, 50-42. West poured in 15 and Albany native Lionel Chalmers chipped in 12 of his 16 before the intermission, including a rim-rattling breakaway dunk that gave Xavier the eight-point advantage. Siena's point guard Tommy Mitchell matched Chalmers output with 12 points to pace the Saints, which led by as many as seven in the early going. The Saints came out strong in the second half as well, cutting the lead to a single point three minutes in. Austin Andrews connected on back-to-back threes and by the 16-minute mark, Siena had four players in double figures. Romain Sato answered with back-to-back threes to provide Xavier with a cushion mid-way through the final stanza. Sato, who entered the game shooting just 19% from three-point range on the season, converted 6-of his-12 attempts from beyond the arc. Siena continued to battle, forcing the ball to the inside, and after freshman Michael Haddix scored seven consecutive points, the home team trailed by just five with three minutes left. Haddix finished with 21 to lead the Saints. Prosper Karangwa, who ended with 17, then trimmed the lead two just three with a breakaway layup to bring the partisan crowd to its feet. Sato again had the answer, however, drilling a three from the top of the key to push the lead to six. Sato trotted back down the court with a finger on his lips silencing the crowd. Both teams were red-hot from the floor all night. Siena converted 51.6% of its field goal attempts compared to 48.3% for Xavier. David West finished with 21 for Xavier but was matched all night on the opposite end by Siena's young frontline. Andrews (12), and Mitchell (12) joined Karangwa and Haddix in double figures for the Saints. Anthony Miles had 10 as the final member of the Xavier quartet to reach double-digits. ........I'll take an effort like this again tomorrow without another Romain Sato sighting.....Β The place was rocking that night but he always had an answer Man, the names, the roar of the arena! It seems so long ago. More than 17 years! I think we can get back to those numbers. If work ethic is a big part of the equation I think we all have a good shot with Carm and Co.

I would love to see them pull off the upset as much as the next fan, but I don't think expecting them to compete/win here is realistic. To win this game we would need more than one freshman to step up and play really well against upperclassman from the Big East- and that's a lot to ask in a kid's second ever college game. I would be happy if we play them close for the first 5 minutes and keep it within 20 for the final score.
That being said, I hope Carm and the players all believe they can win. It may not be a realistic expectation, but it's not impossible- it could happen if the team believes, fights hard, and we get a LOT of luck on our side!

COMPOSURE early in the game is the key. Not to be intimidated or awed by playing in a big-time arena, big city, ranked team. In the past, even Fran's teams early in the regular season just seemed starstruck. I'm hoping with Burns's experience and the skills that he, Jalen, Carey and others have, we can keep it close. Then, at the end, anything can happen.
Proud of this team and our staff! GO SAINTS!!

It's a big east team vs. a MAAC team. However, this ain't Duke or North Carolina either. We're just merely discussing game plan and the potential for an upset if the Saints play perfect. This Xavier team was ranked 65th last year. That's not top 25. They're mainly just in top 25 cause a lot of teams lost players to NBA or graduation or whatever. They lost a couple key shooters and their main shotblocker...and only beat a turnover prone 287th ranked team by 19 at home....kinda like what we just did. This has the feel of one of those veteran teams ranked in the top 25 in preseason that quickly falls out by end of November and middles in their conference. Whether it's us or somebody else who knocks them out of the top 25, I think this could happen to them.

Hold up there champ. Who said they're a top 150 team all of a sudden? 1 blowout win over a crippled Patriot league team does not a top 150 team make. I'm as encouraged as anyone by Tuesday's result. But let's not put the cart before the horse.

I dont think that's going to far out on a limb. ( could be better who knows?) At any rate we sure as hell aint the 267 ranked team we were last year.

But let's not put the cart before the horse. No, you're right. It doesn't. I said preseason though that range was 100-250. But based on what I saw, I'm pretty sure Siena is under 200 already considering what I know about the games of these players. It's not about how they did in one game...it's about how they did confirming to us that they are what they are on paper offensively. I'm actually more afraid of Siena's defense right now. Saints fouled too much vs. American and gave up a lot of easy buckets....2 things that aren't a good sign going into 2 higher conference games vs teams who rely on the 2 pt shot and drawing fouls. However, they looked like a top 150 offense. The Core 4 looked real good. Saints went up like 40 spots in Kenpom offense after 1 game...and I expected something like that even before the game. They won't always have games like that but I think this team's ranking on offense will settle at a much better level. The Core 4 are going to be quite efficient. The PPS will stay much higher than it was last year...and they are continuing to handle the ball well. If King and Harris etc.. step up...they might even sneak into the top 100 on offense. Offensive rebounds, protecting the ball, and high PPS do wonderous things for your ranking. Remember, Burns is a high PPS guy historically. That is HUGE given his likely volume and the system we're running. And Camper is high efficiency as well at PF. The last time we had that in the front court was with Bisping/JO...and Siena had a top 150 offense. But remember that team turned the ball over like crazy in spite of having Wright. Once (IF) the freshmen start to settle in and step up...this could get to as high as a top 100 offense by Kenpom's standards cause this team takes such good care of the ball (20th in nation last year).
