Does this (Spire connection) help with Welch? Penn insurance policy?
Older offers (2016) from MAC and Horizon not much activity since.
Anything on his game? KK?

need more scholarship openings...................are individual player meetings being held to determine their status on this roster? ??...............still needs 2-3 actual difference makers on the wing, athletic scorers, rebounders & legit defenders (more so if our frontcourt doesn't improve or stays as is)............... for that matter, has the YEAR END meeting between Darg & Patsos occurred yet? ..............as of last week, it had not............that is very odd & concerning..............

I don't think Zachery was their 'A' PG.

Here's Baker's pre-SPIRE stats again: www.maxpreps.com/athlete/devon-baker/z6RuunH2EeS00gAmVebEWg/gendersport/basketball-stats.htmThere's not much to fault him on based on this...especially his Junior year. Seems to be able to do most things and doesn't look like a gunner. Good (80%+)FT% and seems to make threes when he rarely takes them. Focuses more on 2's. I think he's attempting more 3's at SPIRE though and perhaps took on more of the scoring load when Welch got injured. I don't know that he's going to be that super distributing PG but he could give us a lot of the same things as Penn so we have a solid backup/tandem either way. As long as he at least nets out as a Smithen, it should be a plus.

One thing to note: Baker has always played next to a D1 guard. Even at Dunbar, he had Caleb McConnell (Who is now at SPIRE) who is a 6-5 guard who was their leading scorer and had 3.5 apg as well (secondary ballhandler). That would imply he isn't all that ball-dominant. Since Penn rebounds well, you can probably play both of them together, especially if Penn hits on catch-and-shoot looks as well as he did when he was healthy.
Still need that injection of athleticism from the Welch/Timberlake/Emilien group.

Can he play defense we need guys that can stay in front of people. He might not be quite as quick as Penn but he's probably a better defender than almost anyone else returning except maybe Camper or Bentley. He had 60 steals and 7 blocks in 28 games as a junior...and averaged almost 5 boards. Even in HS, Richard was a 2 RPG guy and couldn't manage a steal per game even then. 7 blocks would more blocks than Richard has had in his last 4 years of playing basketball (1 as Jr. in HS, 1 this year). Shivers and Horn...it's a similar story. There's a REASON Siena couldn't force any turnovers this year. Will Baker be a defensive upgrade over Smithen? That would remain to be seen...but he'll very likely be better defensively than Richard, Horn, and the rest. He seems like kind of Austin Tilghman like only 30 lbs lighter and thus maybe more athletic.

Penn was a solid PG, but he was not really that fast or quick, we need to get faster & more athletic at every position............

Penn was on pace for 40 steals and 7 blocks as a frosh on a team with little defensive prowess around him. There is nothing wrong with that. Penn's primary issue was not speed, athleticism, or defense. It was lack of aggression, deferring too much, and not creating for others enough.

Mark Singelais:
.@spire_Institute head coach Dave Briski on new Siena commit DeVon Baker: "They're getting the most underrated player in the country. The kid's really, really good. He's special." Averaged 17 ppg, 5 rpg, 4 apg, for SPIRE, which went to national prep championships.

Penn, Baker, Timberlake, Welch, Oduro would be pretty athletic...with maybe Emilien off the bench at the PF.
You know, just wishful thinking again.
