He might not be quite as quick as Penn but he's probably a better defender than almost anyone else returning except maybe Camper or Bentley. He had 60 steals and 7 blocks in 28 games as a junior...and averaged almost 5 boards. Even in HS, Richard was a 2 RPG guy and couldn't manage a steal per game even then. 7 blocks would more blocks than Richard has had in his last 4 years of playing basketball (1 as Jr. in HS, 1 this year). Shivers and Horn...it's a similar story. There's a REASON Siena couldn't force any turnovers this year. Will Baker be a defensive upgrade over Smithen? That would remain to be seen...but he'll very likely be better defensively than Richard, Horn, and the rest. He seems like kind of Austin Tilghman like only 30 lbs lighter and thus maybe more athletic. Penn was a solid PG, but he was not really that fast or quick, we need to get faster & more athletic at every position............ Better coming from you than me.... I agree

Singelais updated. He had surgery. 3 month recover timetable..looks good. And it was also mentioned that Penn and Baker could play together a fair amount.

One thing for sure the pg will play 40 mins per game. Doesn't look like Penn is the favorite coming into this season for that spot. Might not be healthy enough

He's got an extra contingency of 4-5 months on top of that to get back to 100% if things don't go as planned..

He's got an extra window of 4-5 months on top of that. That's great for him. I am sure that makes you happy. Hopefully he wasn't recruited over. Time will tell

Time will tell I don't give a crap who starts if it's what's best for the team. As of now, Penn and Baker could very well be Siena's top 2 guards all-around...so they might have to both play...until something changes. And even if it does change, whomever doesn't start could likely still see 20 mpg as a backup and combo guard.

You would think but on this team the best players don't always start let alone play so the jury is out on what will happen. More than likely Penn was recruited over at the point and since he can't play any other position he might transfer out.

Siena has 2 PGs in a league where having 2 good PGs is largely a prerequisite for success. Jimmy could very well pull another 'Smithen' on us but, if he was smart, he'd use them both for as much time as their skillsets allow. Given both Baker and Penn's on paper skills especially with regards to defense and rebounding, they very well could both play....like a Robinson/Hornbeak combo. Neither seem to have the defensive weaknesses of a Horn, Wojcik, or Richard...so in theory they can play more mins.

Please, most quality teams have quality back ups that get quality minutes. describing being recruited over as a negative infers that the best plan is to put all the eggs in one basket.

I'd actually argue that, given that Siena maybe doesn't seem to have a high assist PG...that Siena would be best off by playing both Penn and Baker 30 mpg a game if Baker is what he seems on paper.
Siena can't afford to have a starting SG with even a 1 to 1 assist ratio like the shooters could give you. They need higher production than that there.
Need to let whichever shooters remain when the dust settles fight over the rest of the mins. We'll need them but they need to be mixed in with the defenders rather than playing all at once leaving us exposed on D.
Penn and Baker could both help the turnover margin differential with taking care of the ball and getting steals. That's our major issue so Siena may need to use them both for high minutes...even if Timberlake and Welch commit.
I WOULD THINK that without Nico, with Shivers' role reduced, with someone besides Richard back running the PG, and with another year of experience under their belts....that Siena would have at least a chance to greatly cut down on the turnovers next year.
