I agree you don’t want to get carried away with the results, W’s/L’s, but you do want to use these kinds of games to learn about your team and players. I think what we learned is that Eley is going to play a big roll, Gribben may be a serviceable backup and could develop. But on the downside we have no backup PG and an injury or foul trouble with JM and you can throw the season/game out the window. Other than JM And Eley we have no 3 pt shooting. We need Owens to recover and be a contributor because there doesn’t seem to be much quality depth. By December we may be hoping Carm can re-recruit Gaines. Well IF Platek, Coyle and Owens cant shot the 3, why are they on the team? I love Platek but he was a career 29.9% shooter from 3 at UNC, Owens is an unknown with a strong possibility he won’t be playing this year, and Coyle is a freshmen.

It’s probably worth noting re: all the Coyle buzz that Mason Courtney got substantially more run than Coyle during Italy. Could be position-related given we were guard-poor on the trip without Javian. Doesn’t mean Coyle can’t become something or won’t play this year… but Carm allocated those minutes elsewhere during Italy. I agree, and was pleasantly surprised with what I saw of Courtney the 2nd game (the only one I saw). I also saw a lot to like in Zeke and Gribben, although both will need time to reach their potential.

Unfortunately Eley will be the only newcomer to provide much and he will have his growing pains. This team has an incredible lack of shooting and will struggle mightily to score. I think if everyone is honest with themselves, you would know this team is going to struggle. Right now the only established known scorer is Stormo. That’s it.

Saw the highlights of games 1 and 3, watched the second game. My take always. Team needs JM healthy. He provides offense and will find guys for good shots. Siena isn’t going to be a great 3 point shooting team but some of the struggles they had last week had less to do with the shooters and more to do with the offense creating open shots. They’ll be okay.
Eley looks to be a player. I was pretty impressed with Gribben and thought the Turkish kid showed some potential. He plays fast and pushes the ball well.
Didn’t see much out of Coyle or the Icelander. Lane looks like a suitable 10 to 15 backup with 5 fouls to give.
Potential is there to be pretty good, would have loved to see them with JM available.

In addition to Stormo, I see McCollum, Platek and Billups as established scorers - some of of whom haven't even been shown us all they've done got yet. Potentially add to that Eley, who led the team in scoring in Italy. They've got shooters, but the catch is most of them are underclassmen. They did very well well on the boards in Italy - which we can attribute to Carm getting Stormo some help up front. I can't speak to the otherwise frosh besides Eley, but I think at least one other will emerge. Carm hasn't really had any recruiting classes that were complete busts.

Well IF Platek, Coyle and Owens cant shot the 3, why are they on the team? Platek is on the team for a lot of other reasons than shooting the 3. He's had 170 3 point attempts in college and shot it at a 30% clip. If shooting the 3 was the only thing he did then he probably wouldn't be on the team. He can do so much more and even backup the point if we need him to but we should not be counting on him as a 3 point sharpshooter. Coyle is a walk on so not sure how he even factors in. Won't matter if Owens can shoot the 3 if we never see him on the court which is looking increasingly likely. Why do you think Roy Williams recruited Platek to UNC? And Coyle WILL get minutes for us this year, regardless of the "walk on" label. King "factored in" as a freshman walk on, so....., and especially if Owens, whos best attribute is outside shooting, never sees the floor because of that knee.

Does anyone know the shot clock duration in use in the games? Was it 30 seconds or 24? I noticed that even as efficient as Saturday's opponent was the buzzer/horn was going off on a number of their missed shots. I think before watching games in Italian I should have done Babbel(?) for a few weeks.

Probably not a huge deal but certainly not an advantage for a young team with a lot of new faces with not much time on the court together.

And, it’s a lot different getting 3 point shots off versus ACC athletes than it will be vs MAAC level players. I liked everything I saw about Coyle when he was recruited. The kid that really surprised me was Gribben. I think he steals minutes this year and ends up the 2nd most impactful freshman.

As always, we are all watching the same game and seeing the same players but have distinct differences in what we see. We have so many new faces that could possibly get minutes as well as our six or seven returning players that got playing time last season. Stay tuned because it's going to be an interesting season. I don't know if it's going to be a winning season or something in between, but I can't wait! In Carm We Trust!!
