I know and understand that Mitch Buonaguro was Fran McCaffery's assistant at Siena.
My Question is,when McCaffery departed for Iowa did Siena conduct an honest thorough search for a new head mens basketball coach and Buonaguro was hired as the result of that search, or did Siena merely hand the keys to the program over to Buonaguro without an true search?
Thanks for your replies.

the answer is well discussed in the Win, lose or no chatter thread, page 2. You're welcome.

At least five or six candidates were interviewed at the Final Four that year (including Mitch), but I do not believe that any of them were brought to campus (except Mitch, who was already here).

Fran supported Mitch immediately. Siena did not have the usual pool thanks to that vote of confidence.
Love Fran as a coach but I could kick him squah in the Jimmy for telling the school, the boosters etc to hire Mitch.

No one wanted the job when Fran left. This program has very high expectations, and was horrible at the positions that matter in mid-major college basketball.
I really feel like the holdover players had too much say in the process, but there wasn't really alot to pick from either.

Even if what you say about guards being the only position that matters is true, Mitch had a senior all MAAC guard in Clarence Jackson, with three NCAA tourney games under his belt, and had he played in the fourth might have won a third game. He was a preseason first team all maac in Mitch's first season. While Rakeem B rookins is certainly a maac level player under the right system, the new guy had a chance to bring in whoever he wanted. Plus, Rossiter and O.D. So, I doubt the coaching selection was limited because of a perceived lack of talent on the roster. It probably had more to do with the salary being offered, and the pressure put on by the former coach, fans and players to hire from within

The list should be MUCH deeper this time around. Siena is currently in the crapper but the fact is this is one of the better mid-majors job not only on the east coast but in the country.
You play in a big-time arena, strong fan base, media coverage, only show in town, good facilities and who knows maybe a better league. A coach can make really good money here and if he does well parlay it into a multimillion dollar contract.

I don’t believe that for a second- everyone knew the job was going to Mitch- which heavily discouraged more applicants .. The Siena job is a king maker..if you can coach you can win at Siena—it’s one of the top low/mid major jobs in the country .. and all successful coaches are cocky so the expectations would not have scared a good coach away

Sorry fellas the cupboard was not even half-filled. We always disagree on this. Jackson was only a good guard NEXT to Moore. He was one dimensional. So was O.D. (above average at one thing, rebounding). Ryan, great player, but good guards are way more important than a good center.
Expectations were thru the roof. We became spoiled (still are). No where to go but down for the new guy. As for money "being offered," that was in line for the candidates. Trust me if a big name wanted the job, he would have got paid.

You're overstating the degree of Fran's statement support for Mitch.......which he did provide. But not to the level that you suggest. It really doesn't matter at this point anyway.

Does anyone recall the names of the others which Siena interviewed for the job before hiring Mitch?
And yes, it does matter how the process was handled for the previous hiring because I fear that D'Argenio and his posse will go not utilize an open process this time because they have already preselected someone to be hired. My fear is that D'Argenio has already made his decision on who the new coach should be and will merely conduct interviews as a charade.

Many on this Board and in the Siena community say "don't be negAtive". "forget the past, and that it's over". We need to be vigiliant NOT to let Fr. Kevin and D'Arg make the decision without an open and transparent process, with the advice of independent objective experts.
The Beyer, LaNIER AND BOUNAGURO HIRES WERE ALL MADE FROM BLIND NEPOTISM, AND BIaSED OPINIONS. wHY CAN'T WE DEMAND AN OPEN AND HONEST PROCESS. tHAT IS WHAT IS BEST FOR SIEN AND IN KEEPING WITH ITS VALUES.

The names that were closely associated with the interview process were Bill Coen, Cliff Warren and Norm Roberts.

There is never any transparency is these types of hires....you think they are going to tell the general public who is being interviewed?
