I just think firing an individual after one year compromises the coaching process and the type of coaches you get in the future. What qualified coach would want to come to Siena after the previous coach got fired after year 1? I understand where you are coming from, you just never really see it done...plus Siena doesn't have the coin to pay him 3 years and another at the same time...unless there is some lucky alumni that was willing to pay his buyout The first part of your post is not true-- it is done in limited circumstances and as Tony posted earlier Mitch was an extenuating circumstance given where the program was at and Mitch's history. I disagree with the second part of your post too --- Siena as a mid major will get flak no matter when Mitch is fired--- bitter head coaches like Al Skinner will post things like "Siena's expectations are out of whack", but SIena needs to worry about its own program, not what other people think. Siena has a history of making multimillionaires out of its head coaches, so any eager coach would jump at the chance to come to Siena if the pay was right. Now, the last part of your post has some merit and likely trumps the first two parts. Nobody knows how the Siena head coaching contracts are structured because Siena doesn't release the information. But, that first year Siena owed Fran McCaffery $200,000 in part due to the incentives offered in his deal for making the NCAAs plus other accomplishments. Plus, Mitch gets at least $300,000. I think there was something guaranteed in the contract that made it cost prohibitive to make the move in the first year. It was either that, or "hope and prayer", as it was pretty obvious after the first year that we were going to slide into mediocrity and worse the longer he was on the job.

Exactly, no way after Mitch signs a 4 yr contract they release him after 1 yr, not a power 6 conference to absorb that kind of money. this is exactly why it should never have been a guaranteed contract beyond two years. Of course from day one Ive been in the camp of never hiring him in the first place and I try to stay off the topic because it thoroughly disgusts me and exposes an issue permeating our society. No f**ing reason someone as incomeptent as this man should be taking home hundreds of thousands of dollars. People just throw money around like its growing on trees. We have no problem taking a chance on a failure by paying him $300,000+ yet we bitch and complain about a teacher making $50k. I am not a teacher but I would be damn pissed to see a guy like Mitch making approximately 1.5 mil over 9 years at Siena ... the equivalent of an entire career for a teacher... or a nurse etc. given the economy of today, the sequester/dysfunction of our government this small situation in Loudonville is a very clear depiction of what is wrong with our priorities as a society. Im not saying to not pay people for success but our society pays people a ton of f**ing money for failure. The rest of us pay for it. /rant off

wow.
Off. The. Rails.
Easy Tiger. Remember the day after Mitch got hired, I heard him on Sinkoff and had to call you because I was laughing so hard.
Yeah boys, that's when I knew the good times were over.
On the plus side, we'll always have those remarkable Mark Thomas commercials. I bet you "dose" guys would like their money back.

I'm betting the new coach has 5 scholarships to give once he gets the job. I don't see Martens returning after he graduates in May. We probably lose 2 of the 4 wings (my guess is Poole and Oliver). Brookins is a big question mark. Will Hymes be okay with coming off bench his superclass years? Both recruits wil be looking for new schools on May 13th.

You forgot Hopper, Bisping has been ill all year and Audu is shizophrenic, not to mention Imoh who still has two basketball years left with three calendar years to get them in....

Rodger Wyland: Mitch is so well liked, it wouldn't shock me if he came back.
Pete Iorizzo: (laughing) It would shock me.
Iorizzo and Mark Singelais are the only two in the media that seem to know what's up. The rest of the media pretty much is either being PC or extremely naive.

Hes started to show some life at the end here and would love to see him under a real coach - Poole seems to have checked out but who knows... maybe the new coach can get him to stay. - Brookins/Hymes, whatever. Would like to see one or two scholarships open here - Ogunyemi will probably come anyway. - Jiggets, who knows? has his stock risen at all? Seems Siena was battling the NEC/lower AE for him. so returning: Burdine Silas Brookins Possibly gone: Bisping Poole Hymes Hopper most likely gone: Audu Oliver Incoming: Ogunyemi Possibly not: Jiggets

The next coach could have a similar roster (albeit less talented) to what Fran inherited in 2005. Fran got a steal with Kenny in June and signed Osby/Diop as JUCOs. We're going to need to potentially look at a JUCO or two even if they are just role players.
Going back 8 years Fran only had from Lanier (Scoop, Kojo, Tay, Ryan, Beers and Haddix who got hurt and didn't play Fran's first season). Could be a similar situation.

Poole really wanted to be at Siena, not just for hoop. I bet he only leaves if Mitch stays.
Imoh only has 1 year left so I doubt he leaves.
Oliver has a busted wheel. I doubt he has the opportunity to go anywhere D1.

Rob's aunt played for Siena. I tend to agree with Glen on his staying.
Imoh has two years of eligibility remaining. I don't think he would lose anything by sitting out a redshirt year, but I have no feel for what he might do. He is a serious student and appears to appreciate the fact that Siena did not waver on its commitment to him once his loss of a year of eligibility was confirmed. That may increase the likelihood he wants to stay.
It is possible that a new coach retains someone from the current staff, which could help with the retention of Ogunyemi and Jiggetts. The fact that I saw a half of one of Jiggetts' games is not going to help. :-)

knicksaint is right on imoh. He has 3 years to play 2 so he could transfer and sit out and not lose anything.
brookins and burdine having already redshirted would lose a year of playing by transfering. (unless they can pull a momo and get a waiver and head home somewhere in PA)

I thought Imoh had 3 years to play 2 - at the time that he was signed due to the loss of time/NCAA. He sat out 1 year and played this year. That leaves 1 year left. Either way I think he could only play 2 years and just played 1.
Gomis was the one who had more eligibilty. That worked out great huh?

Once the appeals were done, Gomis and Silas each had three years of eligibility after sitting out their first year at Siena. The NCAA originally determined that Gomis would only have one year and Silas three years, but in Gomis' case that was changed to three years on appeal. The appeals had sought four years of eligibility for each.

regarding Brookins... unless he is used in relief and cleared medically, his health should come first and his career be over
