I was surprised that we did not pound the ball inside more. If we could have gotten our big guys more touches down low and let them shot fake and go up to draw the foul, or kick out to the wing to the guards who can then shoot or drive and dish. We had good offensive flow for the most part of the game until the last 7:00 of the game. I thought Poole should have handled the ball and took his man off the dribble like he was able to do a few time. I thought we played as bad a defensive game that we have since Canisus. Our guards cannot go under ball screens that allow them to shoot 3's and then our help defensive off the dribble was poor. Like Jimmy has said a few times this year, that this team cannot handle winning. We came out flat and played with little intensity and fire. Iona wanted this game more than we did. We can analyze this all we want-- it comes down to what Jimmy has said many times-- both privately to boosters and alumni and in papers- we need more talent. Our Guards are small, we have no true back up point guard. We are young. Lets face it we are about a 500 MAAC ball club this year and nothing wrong with that considering where we were last year. I think we can all agree top priority for recruiting is a combo guard that can play the point... hopefully a guard at least 6'2"

Was very obvious to see that without Wright we have a major issue at PG.... 7:30 2nd half Wright fouls out of the game with us up by 4. We begin to struggle to run plays and end up losing the game. I hope that no one says we need another BIG when it is very very clear you need another PG.

Um how many 3s were shot right over Hymes? Really ?? that's what you got out of this game. Hymes offense kept Siena in the game. Maybe you should focus on the starting 3, who was hyped to be able to play and guard the 1-4, only playing 15 minutes with 2pts and 1 reb. And the starting 5 playing 6 minutes, because the big lineup could not handle Iona's quickness.

I'm not sure a combo PG will be the salvation that many hope for. The best solution for the times Wright is out of the game is for everyone else to have more experience running Jimmy's offense.
We're making good progress but 17 games is still very little time. I see Poole, Bisping, Hymes & White getting used to it and their roles, but Long & Silas are still finding their way.
So no Wright and no experience spells trouble. No Wright but experience with Jimmy's O on the floor is managable (especially with a Pat Cole next year).

Absolutely agree that we are a .500 MAAC team, and that it is okay. With what we have on roster, and with limited scholarships available that 6'2 combo guard is very much needed. Keep in mind we do have Cole who is the best player on the team. With only one scholarship to give do you think Gottfried son is in probability to take that spot? He seems to be that shooter we say we need, and he has good size. Taplin and him might give us that punch off the bench we need and are missing.

I didn't read any of this thread, so I apologize if this is adds to or contradicts what has gone before, but this game was winnable. Even with all the threes, if Iona hits 40% instead or 50%, i.e., if only three of those forced threes that were shot off balance, stepping away with a hand in their face fails to go in, Siena wins this game. But all the credit to Iona, they hit those shots and hit 50% from three. They could beat anybody hitting that percentage. Bottomline, great effort, but a loss, so it was for nothing. Let's move on and steal some on the road to make up for this one.
One thing I noticed, that in no way effected the outcome, but drives me crazy, is the refs "coaching" the players. Three or four times while Siena was shooting fouls shots and the player had the ball in his hands, English approached the Iona bench for instructions and was about to go below the foul line, a violation and I believe a technical foul, and one of the refs restrained him and told him not to go below the foul line. That is not the role of the official. Let it happen, call the technical and let that teach the kid the rules from his infraction.
Oh and I'm sorry, but I have to take credit for identifying English as a dangerous player. He singlehandedly beat Siena today. I guess I'll have to place all the blame Mitch for this loss for not recruiting him. ;-)

Um how many 3s were shot right over Hymes? Hymes was a liability at times but at the same time he kept us in the game. Kid had a very good game. This is not a good game to be down on Evan. Geez give the kid a break.

We played well today, shot better than 50%. Iona shot lights out from 3 and hit shots over everyone, some contested and 5' beyond the 3 pt line. Tough to beat a team that's shooting like that......
Can't fault Hymes Oliver or White.

So you would gamble the entire season on a turned ankle? We have no back up PG on team- that is a major problem. If we were talking a few min here or there to rest Wright- then you might get by with Hymes or Cole- a foul out or heaven forbid a turned ankle and we are in a world of $hit as was evidenced tonight. No thanks I won’t gamble an entire season on having no back up PG and no having other non- point guards do the job isn't the answer either, In fact its borderline irresponsible. Jimmy has an entire off season to address this issue - doing nothing is not the answer.. saying Hymes or Cole is not the answer

Nothing against Gottfried but we probably have to shoot higher. We need Taplin or a similarly talented PG. I'd love to have Gottfried as a priority walk on and potentially down the road, becomes a scholarship player but we have to shoot higher if we want to get back to being an elite mid-major program where we were four short years ago. We can still finish with a winning record in the MAAC but we probably can't lose more than one more home game. If we go 8-2 in the MAAC at home and win 3 road games (we have 1 already) that's an 11-9 MAAC season which would be a solid accomplishment in a major rebuilding year. Next year with Cole and hopefully Taplin and the freshmen becoming sophomores and getting better no reason why we can't compete for the MAAC championship.

Nice to see White not playing out of control on offense and showing his mid-range game within the flow of the overall offense. His minutes should improve if he can keep that up.

1- Did anyone else notice Jimmy going after the ref when the game was over. Jimmy came all the way down the court, shook hands with the Iona team/staff then went right after him, got in his face and then turned and walked away. The ref followed him all the way down to half court yelling at Jimmy but when Jimmy wouldn't turn around and acknowledge the ref he gave up and went to the locker room. 2- Where was silas the second half. 3- Was Lavon sick? If not he didn't play well and or impact the game at all. Two mediocre outings in a row for him.
