The whole team is lifting. That’s a great sign. The extra muscle will help Sloan’s shot get even better, but won’t help at all with his rebounding numbers. That’s heart and a mentality. IF those things change overnight, great. I’m just happy that Carm has made it clear to him he needs to rebound to stay on the floor. No more free roaming passes like he got from JC. If he can get 2-3 rebounds a game in his 25 min, I’d be ecstatic. I hope it happens. A few things, yes the entire team is lifting-- nobody and I mean nobody on the team has hit the weight room harder than Sloan since end of the season. One look at the kid ( 18/19 year old can build up fast) and you can see the difference. So lets give credit where credit is due. And no need for the back hand slap--- dont you think Sloan knew he had to do more ? I dont think anyone ( even Indian Saint) thinks Sloan will suddenly become a 6 rebound a game man- but if he is going to play significant minutes. I would think he has to grab 3 a game Staying on the positives --I like the fact he is working on some post up moves, towards the end of last year many teams were putting a guard on Sloan, if he can post up the guard, that will put a quick end to that practice. Forcing an opponent to guard Sloan with a big man will only help open up the floor even more for Elijah, Jalen, Don, Manny and Gary to attack and finish. Also opening up possibility of Sloan driving to hoop( that is a big ask for this year) Would be nice if Sloan can get to the line once in awhile, he is close to automatic from line Love the fact he is working on ways to play better positional defense. Kevin Degnan was classic example last year on how to do that. I thought Kev was a very under appreciated defensive player last year Anyhow its pretty hard to find anything negative in the gazette piece- If we know Sloan has to do more - dont you think he knows it also-- and so far kid is doing everything we could ask as fans

I do think Carm is going to hold him more accountable than JC did for his board/defensive work, and I’m glad for that. So where do we disagree?

I actually said give credit where credit is due-- for Sloan's effort in weight room- You know where you tried to minimize Sloan's efforts in weight room by saying entire team is lifting. As for the back handed slap- I'll take the high road, no need to get into a pissing contest over a player no longer here.

I agree that I think Carm is gonna be more of a toughness coach than I think JC is. I look forward to that.
I think Carm also may have the rare talent of adaptation given how many different coaches he’s worked for.

If he consistently balances classes gets and continues to develop solid talent and your assumptions prove to be accurate we should be in for a fantastic ride!

However, he seems to have a balance of analytics and practical view towards the game. He's not a salesman. He's a grunt who seems detail oriented and yet practical about it at the same time. And if 'Attack and Finish' is the mantra on the court, as well as just an off the court philosophy...then I would think that the team will be more aggressive towards the rim and going and getting the ball. It greatly helps though, if he makes it a habit to continue to recruit athletes like Harris who will go and get it. Aggression and pressure is half the battle in basketball.

I got thinking ( that is big news in itself) that when it comes to defense, new players will have to get used to how the Maac refs call the game. This not only goes for the freshman but also the transfers. I watch other conferences on TV and many of the major ones let a lot of the ticky-tack stuff go. I think Burns in particular is going to have to be smart. The refs can control the game depending on when they call fouls and against whom.

Sounds like Sammy's medical redshirt is still in process - expected to have two years of eligibility remaining.

The bench front court minutes were horrendous after he got injured last year. To be a good team, you can't afford to just mail it in for 10 mins a game while your starters rest.

I think Young and Sutherland can provide some quality minutes up front if Sammy can't go for whatever reason. Frontcourt depth isn't an issue. Like you, I'm concerned about whether there's quality backcourt depth. I'm not as bullish on Hein as Tony. I'm banking on Harris being a capable combo guard.

I wouldn’t say I’m bullish on Hein, I do think he can be a solid “role” player for us. And even if he doesn’t work out Carm has other options. Right now he wants to rest Jalen and Don together, if Hein doesn’t work out – he has other options with sliding Don to PG and playing Harris, Camper or Ratliff in backcourt next to Don..Options..I like options!

KK will probably flip out on this but can Hein give us what Smithen did last year? That's really all we're looking for.
Smithen's 18-19 season - 19.4 MPG, 47.4% FG, 40.4% 3FG, 78.7% FT, 4.8 PPG, 1 APG, 1 SPG, 2.2 RPG
Hein's 17-18 season - 21.9 MPG, 30.5% FG, 31.3% 3FG, 65% FT, 4 PPG, 1 APG, 0.8 SPG, 2.2 RPG
Hein was hurt last year....did not have a good year but if he can get back to his form in 17-18 he can give us what Smithen did. Both the same size and Hein played in a better league. Illinois State fans said he was a solid defender too.

I don't see a scenario where Carey and Pickett can rest together. I see the offense going into the tank if that were to happen. Outside of potentially Harris, I don't see another guard on the roster who can reliably put up points. Camper is definitely a 3/4 - can't have that dude on the perimeter, because defenses will lay off him and dare him to shoot. Ratliff, I'm not sure what to make of him yet. He's solely a 3 as well. At 6'8, he's not capable of defending small, quick MAAC guards. Darwiche supposedly can shoot (that's what Europeans are supposed to be good at right?) and can theoretically run the point for a few minutes, but he appears to be an end of the bench player talentwise. Frankly, I hope you're right about Hein and we're wrong. Otherwise we may have backcourt depth issues. Which I fear is why the staff was in hot pursuit of Webster.
