Do you think that Siena has the ability to pay 1 mill? No. Nor do I think it would have cost a million dollars to get him. You think it would take less than 800k?

I'm curious what people think about the salary that may have been discussed with Pitino. Pitino was rumored at Rhode Island where Hurley was getting 1M a year. Dunleavy is getting 800K at Quinny so I would expect Siena to be offering somewhere between those two numbers plus incentives to put Pitino over 1M a year. I just can't see Pitino expecting over 1M and I cant see Siena offering much less, why bother having the discussion. I think pitino realized that Siena's interest was lukewarm at best and by that time it the story had legs. Money is an easy excuse and most of the country will believe that we didn't have the resources rather than the interest. Too bad. So let’s say Siena offered ..900k! It’s a reasonable offer. You walk away! Saying that’s our offer ..but we will looking around! Let him sweat it out ..

....deal is dead. Over all things, money! Guess I was wrong about him caring about he actuallly made on his resurrection job. No idea how far apart the parties were, but I guess it's on to the next batch of candidates. Ps--I'm praying my source is off on this one, but I don't think so ;( Oh but I thought in the newspaper pitino said he doesn't care about money? Lol. You guys really are gullible. The dude is who he is. He was never taking Siena seriously. He's not getting out of bed for less than a couple million dollars a year. Who said the salary wasn't sufficient? What if the snag was the joke of 200k allocated for the three assistants? Or if it was the exit penalty a lot of us felt Siena should include in any contract? Leaves after 2 years, has to give us $2million, 3 years, 1.5 million etc....he might not agreed with it. The fact he had a face to face with the school proves what you fail to recognize, and that's okay. No one needs you to recognize the facts. We can all see them.

What I am saying is pitino knows what a small mid major Catholic institution can pay him. He didn't drop a hint to a local friend that he would be interested in the Siena job thinking he would get millions. My opinion is he's interested and has recently found out that Siena isn't and his camp will leak that it was money based so that he can save face that a small school from the maac didn't turn him down. It's an ego and image thing.

Agree with everything you said but it leaves one question in my mind. Say a Power 6 came sniffing after year 2 or 3, wouldn't they be the ones to cough up the X Millions? I saw the hire as a clear investment in the future - he wins, we win - he gets taken away, we win with a fat nest egg to hire the next winner. Don't buyouts come from the school that is grabbing the coach?

You're probably right about the assistants pay. What do you think the minimum he would be looking for for 3 assistants? $500k?

Maybe he wanted to bring Pagent in, leave after 3 and let Pagent have a guaranteed position. But Pagent can’t,won’t work for peanuts.
Another consideration concerning assistants is who wouldn’t want to be his assistant for their resume, they work for almost nothing.
MP your right win win.

Well the assistants are his scapegoats, so the more we paid them the bigger the risk.

But I don't think he will be going hard on the recruiting path for a mid major. My guess is a lead recruiting assistant is important to him, which means a decent salary.

Seems like a good spot for Pitino. Not a super respected school. He could go there and get them some wins. That seems like a school that might take a chance.

FIU possible, as he will like the weather. Either way, Siena has avoided a huge mistake IF Pitino is really out. He might not be. Someone said this could be postering, that is possible.

Some may say they avoided a huge mistake, others could argue they missed out on their chance to become a nationally recognized program and a top mid major. I hope it’s not totally done yet
