It would work......if Marc Brown was interested?....it would work.
Get out of the tunnel vision that Patsos would be making $400k for three years doing nothing and that Marc Brown would be making $150k p/yr busting his butt with no guarantee beyond two or three years trying to build this program back up to where it used to be and beyond.
If you stay in that rabbit hole you are truly limiting yourself and I can't do anything to help you see the light of a viable solution.
If you can't afford to pay two coaches market value pricing and you can't afford to keep a current coach beyond another week who has been bringing this program down in a number of different ways for the past 5 yrs, then paying Marc Brown $150k is a viable solution.
Marc Brown Profile:
College playing experience at D-1 Level.
College playing experience at Siena as being the all time best player in Siena Program history.
Professional playing experience.
Although D-3, HC experience.
As a HC he has an overall .595 winning % and including this year to date, is 57-20 over the past 3 yrs.
Contacts in the NJ/NYC area.
Success stories happen all the time with guys who come from little coaching experience at the level they end up thriving at:
two recent ones that come to mind are Nate Oates at University of New York at Buffalo and the Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl Winning Coach who both had "HC" experience only at the HS level prior to being the HC at where they are now at their respective levels. And both are doing obviously very well.
Do you really think that Marc Brown would not do a better job with the pieces he has on this team right now than Jimmy Patsos will do with these exact same pieces he has on this team next year?
Come on now? If your answer is not yes to that, than you are just fooling yourself.
Yes, it might turn out to be a quick fix. Marc Brown may not end up being the long term solution. Only time will tell on that. But from Siena's standpoint, the risk is very low compared to keeping Patsos.
I do know that this program needs a "big" shot of energy and regardless of what happens on the court in terms of wins and losses next season, bringing in Marc Brown along with a great marketing program to support his hiring would without a doubt, provide that quick boost of energy of hope.
That's an easy Business 101 short term knock it out of the park type of no brainer guarantee. He would bring people and energy back to this program well before ever coaching a single game at Siena.
From a personal standpoint I know for certain two things, and I am sure I am not alone on this.
If Patsos stays, I am not renewing. I like many others, know the only way to make Siena realize that I am not accepting of how they are running their program is to hurt them in their wallet. It''s literally the only way to make them realize so I intend to do my part even though I would be giving up two great seats.
If Marc Brown was hired I have hope. I am excited. I am pumped well before we ever get to game one of next season. And I am 100% renewing.
They not only would not lose season ticket sales in mass numbers as they will if Patsos stays; they would actually grow season ticket sales if Marc Brown was hired.
If he shows that he doesn't do the job after 2 yrs, than move on from there.
The quick fix didn't work as far as a long term solution goes, but at least you stopped the bleeding for a short while instead of letting the program bleed out completely by doing nothing.
I do feel very certain that out in the recruiting world he would represent the program and the Siena College Community in it's absolute best light which I cannot say the same for Patsos.
From his perspective, "if" Show Biz was interested, it would be stupid of him not to take that chance of a lifetime at this point in his life at age 48 where he could ultimately end up being the long term solution at Siena making multi-year deals that earn him well over $400k per year?
I am pretty certain from a confidence standpoint that he personally thinks he could do great things at Siena, and given the opportunity would jump at a $150k offer (which by the way though under valued in the D-1 HC Market, is still a pretty darn good income and living for most people out there in this area and certainly compared to what he probably is making now as a D-3 HC?).
Just do it Siena. This is the lucky lob ball you have been waiting for to hit it out of the park. At least it shows your trying to figure out a solution to righting past HC choice mistakes and bad contract extension mistakes.
Show all the naysayers on this board that Marc Brown is a viable short term fix at the very least and ultimately the successful long term solution you have been searching for at the very best.
Don't blow this. Just Do It!
