I'd love to have Paul Hewitt as AD- knows basketball (finally a basketball man running the AD!) and is a well rounded and respected guy who could handle the entire athletic department. I think his coaching days are over.

he got GTECH to the Championship game, only to lose to UConn (who had 4 NBA players on their roster).........with YellowJackets he was 7-5 in NCAA..........tough place to be successful (ask Bobby Cremins), more of a football school, and always chasing both UNC & Duke.......expectations are hard to achieve under those circumstances yet he did admirably well............brief stint at GMason, won over 20 games his first 2 yrs including a CBI runner-up, but then his last 2 yrs were not good (and it may have been because of school switching from CAA to A10 which had Xavier, Butler, VCU)..... Over the 14 years of coaching history on Kenpom, Hewitt was never in the top 135 in the nation at taking care of the ball....even as an ACC team. And his average was 222nd. Do we really want a 3rd coach in a row whose teams have proven to be turnover prone? Is that a ceiling that we'd really want to set for ourselves with this KEY hire? There is a solid correlation EVERY year with taking care of the ball and the place in the standings and many years it's even more than this year: Place -- Team -- A/TO 4 -- Iona -- 1.39 2 -- Canisius -- 1.29 6 -- Fairfield -- 1.15 1 -- Rider -- 1.11 3 -- Niagara -- 1.09 10 -- Saint Peter's -- 0.94 7 -- Quinnipiac -- 0.94 5 -- Manhattan -- 0.88 8 -- Monmouth -- 0.83 11 -- Marist -- 0.75 9 -- Siena -- 0.74 Why limit ourselves in that way right off the bat? Just once, I want a coach whose teams take care of the ball. Also, of note, Hewitt only had 1 year at GT with a winning record in conference (9-7). He mostly just beat up on OOC teams and middled within his conference on good years. Yeah, it's a whole different level there and it's very hard to do but it also potentially sets him out to look a bit better to some extent if all he does is just win a fair amount of his home games. Who said to focus on Paul. He’s an interesting name to discuss. OMG are you OCD with numbers? You make my head spin with these BS metrics. It doesn’t work that way. The games played on the floor not paper. Your knock is based on one stat? ? Paul Hewitt at Siena: Siena (Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) (1997–2000) 1997–98 Siena 17–12 10–8 T–3rd 1998–99 Siena 25–6 13–5 T–1st NCAA First Round 1999–00 Siena 24–9 15–3 1st NIT 2nd Round See GreenGolds post above, I’m not going to repeat it.

You think they're icky. I get it. I've watched Hewitt games. I wasn't overly impressed with many of his teams. I get that he's another Siena hero. But that was 2 decades ago. Basketballs still had laces back then. You can't always recreate the glory days in the same way you did before.

Loved Hewitt at Siena, teams were fun to watch and very good. And he was simply the best representative of the school/program they've had in the time I've been following the Saints.
His style of play was fun, fast and exciting. I remember many on these boards complaining because his teams were not great in the half court and were not great defensive teams. They played a fast pace not to cause turnovers (which they sometimes did) but instead to get the opponents teams out of their comfort zone. Recruiting was so so with, probably, Archbold, Clinton and Prosper the best players he brought into the program (and none of them except Archbold really contributed much while he was in Loudonville).
His issues at Tech stemmed from 1) it's a second tier ACC basketball school at best and 2) he had several guys end up being one and done that were unexpected. In 11 years, his teams went to the tourney 5 times which is nothing to sneeze at.
No idea what happened at George Mason, I didn't follow them (But, given Larranga's rep at Miami, wouldn't surprise me to hear that there was some funny business going on while Larranga was at George Mason.) though his team won an average of 22 games while they were in the CAA and then struggled when they went to the A10. (Not a huge surprise given the programs history).
He is the one former Siena head coach that I would be okay with coming back. If he could take guys like Cantamessa, Osinski and Dave Deters and get them to be successful in an uptempo system, would be interesting to see what he could do with the current roster.

I see both sides of this issue but would rather have a new coach come in. However that coach needs to fully unsterstand the expectations here and be confident in achieving them.

As usual, very condescending know it all reply that makes at least you, think your the most knowledgable guy in the room. In reality, you are very limited, close minded, and usually wrong in your know it all ways. All I have to say "if" Marc Brown was interested, it's very little risk for the opportunity for a very big reward.....and that's on both sides of the coin. [1quote author=" billmurray" source="/post/123267/thread" timestamp="1519237569"] You are all giving reasons why it would be a slap in the face to Marc Brown if he were offered $150k if lets say for example he is currently making $100k at two levels below what he aspires to be....and if its actually true, to become a D-1 HC. From his perspective, it's like getting out of jail by rolling double 5's and going directly to free parking and collecting the free cash. From his perspective, it's a no brainer. From Siena's perspective, it's an affordable way to rid itself of the s _ _ t show that's been going on at Siena for the past 8 yrs with very little risk involved (assuming you can't afford to pay Rex and pay another market value HC at the same time for the next 3 yrs.) when you have few alternatives to choose from. A few assumptions here may be incorrect. 1. Brown is continuing his father’s legacy at his current job. That may be his goal, not coaching at the DI level. 2. The recruiting at Siena is the key to success. Proven success at DI recruiting is critical and any candidate. To assume a DIII coach will be successful is a huge leap. 3. Assuming Brown should accept “half pay” for a job you assume he will be be successful at is as stated before more than an insult to Brown. 4. Assuming any candidate would not be represented by a qualified agent who would demand the normal protections for his client i.e. buy out clauses and annual incentives is absurd. 5. To assume Brown, who had a long and successful pro sports career would not be represented by an professional agent is a insult to his business acumen and goes beyond the absurd. 6. Assuming the rebuilding of Siena basketball is a job that at a discounted salary And no job security is a no brainer perhaps was an idea conceived without engaging a brain. [/quote]

bill makes some good points counter points. I'm also glad at least ONE person was excited by my idea haha. anyways without having to think too much and pretend I have the first clue about what goes on behind the scenes ... as a fan I'd be super pumped if brown was hired - he's overseen a turnaround of a basement dwelling D3 club into a contender and he's a program legend. there's no where to go but up; its not a horrible time for him to get a shot.

I think Brown would be a great assistant..a great coach for the guards...a great shooting coach...a great moral builder for the team and the fans....IMO I think he would be a great recruiter...there would be no where near as much pressure and it should be a raise....and it could lead to a nice career change...

I will say it again. This is a great idea whoever brought it up. A win-win scenario for all involved.
Just do it!
Come on Siena. Get it done. Fire Patsos a week from Monday.
On Tuesday make an offer to Marc Brown on a guaranteed two year deal (nothing more) for $150k p/yr with a fair market value pay-day in yr 4 if he starts to bring energy and success back to the program.
You can't afford to keep Patsos here. You can't afford not to try to get Marc Brown to come on as an under market value HC.
You will lose season ticket holders in large numbers if you keep Patsos.
If you lose 500 season ticket holders which at minimum is very likely; at an avg of $300 per ticket, there's your $150k right there that you "would not lose" if All Time Great and the most beloved player in program history came back to coach at Siena next year.
For him it could be a life changing opportunity that he would not; will not; get otherwis if he did well at it (which we know he would do much better than Patsos in all areas of being the leader of our program). At 48, it is probably his only way to becoming a D-1 HC.
For Siena, it's very little risk for a great reward scenario. His presence next year would bring immediate energy and revenue growth to a very struggling program If he does do well you just might have a successful coach here for the next 20 years.
And then to boot you have the possibility of a great story book ending of the best player in program history who ends up becoming the greatest coach in program history.
Just do it Siena. You can't afford not to.
