I agree that Richard is clearly not a pg but in these times when teams go small more often, and use their team speed and not size to defend, Richard will get plenty of time on the court this year as part of a three and even four guard set at times. And he will be on the bench when they go with a two guard set.
He will respond because he can put the ball in the hoop. We have already seen that. That's not on paper as something we believe will happen that others on the team may "possiblly" and hopefully do.
That is fact as already been done. Done out on the court during the game where it matters most. There is no denying that when given the opportunity to play his type of game "early" in the season last year before Patsos got in his head, he produced. Without a doubt he produced.
So don't give up on the kid so quickly to some yet unproven freshmen. When shooting in rythm, Richard can score with just about anyone on this team from both long range and mid range.
If Smithen was coming out of his redshiirt year this year, he would automatically on this board be the next Marquis in many peoples minds; just because he was an A-10 transfer and nothing else.
After seeing Smithen out on the court during game time though we knew pretty quickly that Smithen should not be getting minutes over Richard for offensive purposes. I just wish coach realized that. The same holds true for any of the incoming yet game time unproven frosh. Richard may not be a great finisher around the basket like Marquis was or a great individual defender like Smithen may be(??), but he knows how to create enough space for himself through mis-direction movement to create his own shot and finish consistently. And though he may not yet be a good individual defender, he knows enough of how to play team defense in order to help the team make stops.

Richard will be a fan favorite 10(+) point per game average with 20(+) min per gm avg off the bench this yr. - on 40%(+) fg %. Next yr. he will even be better. The kid has already shown he can put the ball in the bucket on a consistent basis in a variety of different ways. When pre-season competition is done, I feel certain that though he will not be starting, he will rise above the competition to get his non deniable 20 (+) minutes per game off the bench. The kid is a "game time" baller. You can see that. Given free reign to play his game, he will force the coaching staff to give him the minutes that this team will need him to get to be successful this year. He isn't going anywhere. Richard is a pg and if he is not allowed to earn mins at the position he was recruited to play then why would he stay?

It's obvious now that Richard was recruited over. It's not that Richard is not a pg. Richard came here to play the point. Patsos brought in Penn to replace him. Let's just speak the facts rather than try and change Richard's position Patsos didn't just bring in Penn. He brought in Horn and Bentley too. That's 3 new scoring PGs. It would thus appear he thought the team was badly in need of people at that position. Patsos brought in Richard to play the 1 because he assumed that would be the best fit because has a 1's size. But it has since been proven that Richard can't play the position adequately. Hence the comment that he has to accept he's a 2 in a 1's body. So I don't think he was recruited over - uubecause it turns out that he in fact can only play a different position than those guys. So now instead of letting the kid struggle at the 1, which would result in being benched, he's going to play a lot at the 2. Everyone wins - including hopefully the team. That is recruited over. You bring someone in to compete for time at the position he plays...then decide he is not good enough to play the position without giving him enough PT to prove it. Next bring in another player at that position and change yours. Richard is not a 2g. So I guess he chose the wrong school

In my mind, the top 5 guards seem pretty set to me and sadly Richard is probably not among them. 3 frosh plus Shivers and Clareth. Richard is an undersized jump shooter who struggles to defend the PG because of his speed and the SG cause of both his speed and size. If the 3 frosh are playing well, and we're not desperate for an extra shooter, it's tough to justify the lack of defense. This is a kid who averaged just 2.6 rpg and 0.8 spg over has last 2 years of HS ball. He only got to the FT line 2 times per game in HS and was just 42% from 2 pt range. He's never really needed to be aggressive off the bounce. Penn, comparatively, was a 55% shooter from 2pt land, averaged 6.1 boards, 2.8 steals and got to the line 3 times as much as Richard when you compare Penn's senior year to Richard's junior year (missed senior year). So he's much more energetic both off the bounce and on D. I'm not so sure about that. Patsos has a history of preferring veterans over playing freshmen a lot of minutes. I think Richard has the leg up on Horn and Bentley for playing time unless he plays himself out of contention. Bentley especially, I'm not expecting much from. A lot more schools as high as A-10 wanted Richard compared to these newcomers. I think he's got more game than you think. I'm betting he starts the season ahead of Horn and Bentley on the depth chart. Especially in light of many here (including myself) expecting Oduro to be an impact player, I just don't see 4 freshman being in the top 8. Not on a Jimmy Patsos team.

He's not - he's at best a combo guard. Consider the evidence. He averaged 3.0 assists per game the last season of his H.S. playing career. Does that sound like pure PG numbers to you? Also, here's an excerpt from the Baltimore Sun article announcing his commitment: Richard plans to play shooting guard as a freshman, while seeing some time at point guard when Marquis Wright (North Point) needs a breather. Richard said he’s looking forward to being the latest Marylander to join Siena and bringing “an instant spark” to the team.
“I know I have a lot of learning to do as far as the point guard role,” he said. Link: Richard Commits to SIenaSo in his own words he planned to play the 2 with some time at the 1 to give Wright a blow while admitting he had a lot to learn about the position. Yet in your opinion, he was recruited as a pure 1 from the get-go. I think you can agree that we have to go with Richard's version of events.

And now this year his position was changed before the season even started. Those 3 apg were enough for him to be recruited to play the point. He admits as every freshman should that he had a lot to learn. He was already a pg tho. With his size he was trained to play the point. He looked for a school that would play him there.

If you had told him to pass more he would have (and could have) averaged 10 points and 7 assists per game. Wright was one of the top 10 scorers in the league though, so we let him score. Was that the wrong strategy? Perhaps. But Khalil Richard is a lot more Evan Hymes or Zavier Turner than he is Marquis Wright. And we know for a fact that those types of PG's don't win in the MAAC.

No, you didn't say pure point guard. I'll concede that. However where's your acknowledgement that Richard himself said he came to play shooting guard with some time at the 1 mixed in? Are you just going to gloss right over that posted comment by Richard?

Here are my thoughts on this- Jimmy has made some questionable choices for Playing time the last few years. I don’t think you will see that this year. He will play the best players that give Siena the best chance to win. You would like to think a coach would do that every year- not convinced that’s the case with JP. I do think JP knows his back is up against the wall- another disappointing season and he will justifiably be canned. He will play players that give him best chance to win. Easy for PPC to say play Richard- it’s not her paycheck. If JP thinks Richard is his best chance to win starting at point then you can bet your rear end that’s what will happen- if he thinks Penn gives him best chance to win, rest assured he will start Penn

I think the best hope for Richard is that he becomes a Tay Fisher type. He's not a PG (only has PG size). He's a small SG... if he can give us instant offense off the bench that would be great. He can score 13 points in 15 minutes from time to time. Good role player potentially.

When you bring in a kid early like Penn did for whatever position from a senior leaving that spot and by the summer you should know if he can start at that position if he can't you would be sweating bullets cause you made a mistake.I don't think he was given the position they where hoping he could take the position and from what has happened so far he has.Remember Penn took his first offer so we didn't get to see who else would've offered but the interest he was getting was from other mid majors. And Siena wanted to get him in school so he wouldn't keep playing too get those offers.I guess that was a good move so far.

When a pg shoots more than everyone else he is shoot first. He was pass first the first 2 years but not the last 2. That was the coach call and not a winning strategy. Khalil is pass first and he did not play the pg position enough last season to evaluate him. It was Wright's show and he played 40 mins per game. None of this matters since Penn has already been handed the spot and Richard is being asked to play out of position. Nico will play most of his mins at the 2 and Shivers at the 3 so Khalil might as well move on.
