Interesting take. I agree after looking at ualbany attendance for this year there is no danger of catching Siena unless there is a major conference change. If I am following you correctly you are saying it doesn't really matter if a program is good or not, student attendance is going to decline because of increasing apathy of students attending sporting events in general. If true that's a major problem that will need to be addressed in the long run, because students turn into alumni and major donors. It's hard to say these days because both programs are losing, but Siena students have basically disappeared this season. Of immediate concern is getting back to the ncaas/nit, if that doesn't bring back students hopefully some more critical thinking will bring about a solution to get the students more involved with the program to ensure lasting support.
On a somewhat related topic, one of my issues with college basketball in general is the declining talent level of the teams, and one of my stated reasons for that is the one and done era. There is a movement to raise the minimum age for the NBA to 20. If enacted over the next few years this will start to reverse the trend. This will trickle down to Siena's level if diligent at recruiting. In my mind however an equally important concern is the growing number of d1 teams. Just recently cal baptist university threw its hat into d1, for example. This dilution of talent from d2 to d1 has marked effects on the quality of d1 basketball, right down to the dilution of the spread too thin refs calling our games. The poor quality of play and Reffing of games could theoretically cause a decline in attendance as well.

The poor quality of play and Reffing of games could theoretically cause a decline in attendance as well. Your absolutely right especially in regard to dilution of talent, leads to attendance. One factor for lack of attendance is lack of participation in sports in HS. Add the everyone should get a trophy when younger and some say whats the point. Majority, greater number UA students are from downstate, used to be called Long Island U. Be that as it may, their graduates do no stay, want to stay add that to the locals you can't get a job here greater majority just leave the area. UA hoop to be congratulated on their recent success but like you mentioned their draw rate per total student population is poor. The football team has been remarkable for moving up, but moving forward football at this level will probably dilute significantly due to the lack of participation now in pop warner HS etc. Not the schools fault just the way the sport is going. The product will not be representative unfortunately to what fans want to see. Larger schools will get the talent. Basically college sports are in a transition and it doesn't look good for the mid majors, BCS schools will always get their athletes. To correct this the schools who do not support the D1 program should be downgraded. Just look at the MAAC and the AE. Schools are in D1 because they have been for years, but their lack of support, fan base facilities leads one to believe that the school could care. When visiting Siena fans out number the home crowd one has to wonder. At the last Vt game I had one of their fans tell me Siena is their biggest draw otherwise place is almost empty. Wondering why schools who have financial challenges continue to support programs which are a challenge to the balance sheet.

Some good points here. I understand that UA has a large commuter number in their student body. It blows me away that a school with 25,000 students doesn't draw squat when taking into account how huge the school is. DI basketball and that number of students? It's pathetic! It has to be embarassing for them considering their recent success. As a Siena alum I'm also embarrassed by the poor turnout of Siena students this season at both men and women's games

Do students pay? If so that's a joke it should've be free since there are thousands of empty seats avsilable.

Re: Albany, going to the CAA is no guarantee that attendance will improve dramatically. Outside of Hofstra, there are no regional rivals and name recognition is not all that great. I'm not sure Elon, Delaware or William & Mary are moving the needle any. At least in the AE, they have traditional and regional rivalries that the fans can get excited about.
I am all for "moving up" and this may be a case where it helps their football or overall program but to think it will positively affect their bottom line of basketball attendance seems to be off the mark.

I just don't care anymore...haven't since after year 1 of Program Wrecker. D'Arg should have been gone years ago. I'm sad because the program could and should be so much more than we see today. I blame not Patsos because a leopard cannot change its spots. With all due respect Mike, if you gave up on the program 7 years ago, why are you still here?

I was talking about the entire season . . . take away the pep band, cheerleaders & dance team and you'd have an inauguration worthy photo of student attendance - pitiful.

As an alum I have the right to complain about student apathy being that the at-large community appears to provide more support . . . it's great to see families at the TUC - young kids appear to be totally enjoying themselves . . . doesn't take much effort for a Siena student to support the team - For women's games it's a matter of walking a few hundred yards across campus to the ARC and for the men's it is waiting to take a free bus down to the TUC . . . granted students have more entertainment options & money then when I went to Siena but evidently supporting athletics is not making it to the top of the list

If Siena beats Monmouth and second place is still an option I'd like to see 10,000 versus Marist.
