That hardly means he couldnt/wouldn't sign with Siena unless there is also a big buyout. Not trying to insinuate that he is going to be our coach just that it is premature to say he is out of the running because he signed an extension.
He isn't out of the running because he signed an extension. He's out of the running because the finalists are now being brought on campus for the 2nd interview - and Paulsen never had a 1st. Siena's next coach will be one of the following four finalists: Toole, Pitino, Patsos, or Rhoades. If Siena stays true to form, the new coach will be announced prior to when the final four starts on the 6th.
I go Pitino first, he's the most likely to instantly ignite this program, and I think its worth the associated risk. I know everyone assumes he's a 1 or 2 years and done guy, but I maintain that all you can do is take the highest upside candidate, and hope for the best. Never know when someone will care more about intangibles than about money, and his family has rich ties to the area.
Pastos next. I'm pretty shocked at the Pastos haters. Guy has a pretty remarkable resume that seems custom made for this job and you're hating because he hasn't pulled off any huge upsets in a handful of games? Of all the candidates I think Pastos most lends himself to the equation: current success + fascilities/name/funding Siena has to offer = expected outcome. And he's the best bet to stay long term on top of all that.
I'd be very happy with Toole. I think he's done a great job, and Siena makes a lot of sense for his career progression, though I don't think he has as much to offer as the others and will almost certainly be another loop in the 4 year revolving door.
Again, I ask can someone fill me in on Rhoades? Why is everyone as pleased with him as the others? I get it, he came from a great program. Can someone fill me in on what his role is precisely, what can we directly credit to Rhoades himself?
