Meanwhile we get a guy who hasn’t played in two years and average like 3ppg On paper we look like the Oneonta Dragons opposed to Iona. They have men at every position and are 12 deep. After our two returning frost and Stormo we have questions everywhere.

Iona takes the kid Hawkins from Utica/Bronx. Norfolk St transfer with one year left. 6'2" guard was teammates with our very own Dana Tate and scored 13ppg. That give them 18 scholarship players Maybe Carm taught Pitino his be a walk on year 1 recruiting pitch? 🤔

Unfortunately for us die-hard Saints fans it looks like Iona is going to be the elite team in the MAAC (again)! Hopefully Siena can stay healthy, get quite a bit strong and surprising play from unexpected players, and hang around to compete with the Gaels. On paper that looks like a tall order. Hopefully Carm and team will show us otherwise.

When we beat them at the TUC/MVP, Iona didn’t play as a team and we were able to beat them.

Hopes were very low for many here last fall and we ended up splitting with Iona and sweeping St Pete's.

Iona had 3 starters from high majors transfer in last year, each of them basically met expectations (or close), stayed healthy almost all year, and yet they still split with us, lost 3 league games and lost in the MAAC QFs…
Now their impact transfers are a solid kid from Norfolk State and a kid who couldn’t get run on a horrible Mizzou team… and we’re the “Oneonta Dragons” compared to them? LOL.
Iona will be good every year Pitino is there. That has been assured since they hired the guy. It’s the perk of having one of the 10-15 best college basketball coaches of all time in your corner. They have a big freshman class with some well-regarded recruits… but not like they are signing 4-stars. They will be beatable.

Going 3-1 vs Iona and SPU is nice but means nothing when you lose in the quarters to 11 seed Quinnipiac.

Let’s be honest we didn’t exactly keep up with the Joneses. We basically rolled the dice this recruiting class. We’re hampered by existing injuries, & lack experienced depth at the PG, & our backup to Stormo hasn’t played in two years. If we’re not healthy (like we saw the past 2 seasons) or lose McCollum for any length we time we’re in trouble. I don’t think this class is bailing us out of anything. If injuries happen @ Iona, I think they’re deep enough not to be impacted, we’re not. Hopefully Eley, Coyle or someone else can step up.

And Iona, with their HOF coach, lost to the #9 seed with a full roster. Siena lost to #11, missing their best player and a kid that started more than half the year. $hit happens.

Iona also rolled the dice, taking freshmen (many of whom like Eley had no other recent offers) instead of trying to get in the mix with proven dudes like Jolly and Joiner like they did last offseason. Are their freshmen more talented than ours? Probably; yeah. And I hate to let you in on this dirty little secret, but they’ll probably get better freshmen and transfers than we do for as long as they have a hall of famer coaching them and we don’t. Unless some of the people on this board who make more money than I do want to start getting us some NIL packages, we’re going to have to win on identifying good kids who are undervalued, developing them and coaching at a high level. This year’s Iona game is proof we can do just that against a more talented Iona team than what they will have this year.

Maybe we need an AD who isn’t a dinosaur. We need someone to navigate the NIL process & develop community business relationships like Fran did/had. The program needs to do a better job taking advantage of & selling CD businesses. Siena is pretty much the top sports draw in the community. Success breeds success. Find - hire an administrator who understands fundraising, this new environment & how to work it😎😉! Then maybe we won’t have to scavenge for underdeveloped unknown prospects. BTW there are quite a few non P5 P6 programs without a “Pitino” that recruit pretty well. That’s a cop out!

As far as the tournament goes, we won as many games as the 'vaunted' and feared Iona did, who had considerably higher expectations.

I find it amazing that a school that offers a Marketing major is so inept at marketing its most visible asset. In 10 or so years Siena has gone from being the preeminent sports program in the area to being an also ran, just another team that has a sports program.

Iona loss was more of a shit happening than 240 Siena going down to the 11 seed.
