I doubt we will see much of Tate at the 5. Sure he has the size, but it's just not his positional mindset. A little birdie told me that we are considering starting him at the three, with Gary as his backup. A few inside birdies told me he'll be an All-MAAC kid, but he wont get many minutes for us?? smh

Here's the problem boys- coaches normally like to play their better players- and Dana is one of our better players- you have 160 min a game at the 1 thru 4. Jalen, Don and Manny are going to play between 90 and 100 min. And please dont say a freshmen is going to beat out a ALL MAAC player because all 3 are likely pre season ALL MAAc'er- that leaves between 60 and 70 min- Gary is going to get 20 min a game,( at least) Jordan will get 10/15 min a game Aidan will get between 15- 25 depending on how ready he is -That leaves between 0 to 15 min left for Dana- unless Dana is playing 10-`15 min a game at the 5 the numbers dont work out- and that means zero min for Golson and BK- unless they can play the 5- so something has to give- either Dana plays time at the 5 or we cut Gary's and Aidan's min - cant have it both ways the numbers dont work out. So if Dana doesnt play the 5--I guess you could cut Gary to 10 min a game and Aidan down to 10/15- then the numbers work out because Dana is going to get at least 25 min a game
I thought the whole point of interchangeability was to put your best players on floor regardless of position- so as far as I can see even though Dana isnt a classic 5- if you dont play him some time at the 5, several of our younger players ( Gary, Jordan Aidan)will see their time drastically slashed or Dana doesnt play much, hard to believe a player on a top tier A10 program could play almost 20 min a game, but cant get 25 min in the MAAC- again doesnt make sense - cant have it both ways the numbers dont work. As far as I can see. If you want your best players on floor Dana is going to have to defend the 5 on defense several min a game. Because Dana is definitely one of our top 5 players . I dont know you guys tell me how the min will work if Dana doesnt play 10-15 min a game at the 5? -- but please save the Aidan will cut into Don's time- because barring injury or foul trouble Don is going to get 30 min a game

If you play him as a guard, you cut into the time of some of our better shooters and ballhandlers. If you play him at center, he might not rebound or defend the 5 well enough. Pickett, Camper, and Carey are still gonna play. It likely becomes a Carpenter vs Tate vs Harris situation. Carpenter can potentially play point, they can’t. Carpenter is potentially an 80% type FT shooter, they have some questions there. Carpenter is ‘the fastest with the ball in his hands on the team’. Carpenter can ‘guard 94 feet’. Carpenter is likely the best 3 pt shooter of the three players. Carpenter doesn’t have to wait until 2nd semester as of now to be eligible. Carpenter gets to the rim at will and reminds Carm of Mark Lyons. On top of this, King is a potential 40% shooter who was playing ahead of Harris at the end of games already. These are big clues for me as to how this thing is gonna play out at the SF position. King will get a little time to gun threes. Harris will a little bit to run out and defend...but the rest probably goes to Carpenter. This pushes Tate to backing up Camper (if not Harris) and playing some 5...where Young and Golson may or may not be able to rebound and defend the interior a little better. And who knows about BK, who would seem to have the skills but not yet the muscle. While Camper is here, Tate simply can’t play his best position. He’s literally being put into a spot where he’s literally competing for minutes with almost the entire team. It is an awkward situation.

It is an awkward situation. a few key points you left out Tate has two years experience at higher level than MAAC- he is bigger stronger than any of the perimeter players We dont know if Dana will be ineligible the first semester As good as AC potentially is - he will not cut significantly into Jalen or Don's min To me where Dana plays on offense isnt important - the question will be on defense end can he defend the 5- he is best equipped to out of all our top 5 or 6 players. To me its pretty simple play Dana at the 5 and pressure the shit out of the ball-- that way you dont cut into Gary, AC or Jordan's minutes. But you cannot play Tate ( who is going to play significant min) at the 3 or 4 without cutting significantly into Gary/Aidan/ Jordan's min. Going to be fun to see what way Carm goes with this

You're probably just being sarcastic but whatever. Assuming BK is simply too skinny for year 1...I foresee something like this if Carpenter is pretty good: PG- Pickett 6-4 _____(33)_Carpenter 6-5_ (7) SG- Carey 6-5 _____ (30) _King 6-0 ____ (10) SF- Carpenter 6-5 __ (23)_ Harris 6-6 ____ (12) _Tate 6-7 _____ (5) PF- Camper 6-7 ____ (33) _Tate 6-7 _____ (7) C- Young 6-9 ______ (20)_ Golson 6-7 ___(15)_Tate 6-7 _____ (5)_ Kwiecinski 6-8 Total Minutes: Pickett - 33 Camper - 33 Carey - 30 Carpenter - 30 Young - 20 Tate - 17 Golson - 15 Harris - 12 King - 10 Kwiecinski - 0 If BK gets in there somehow...then all bets are off. Harris only averaged 19 mpg THIS year. With Carpenter and Tate around, it would make sense for his mins to tighten unless he learns to shoot and create. For Tate to have more minutes...I personally think he'd have to cut into Young and Golson's time before he cuts more into the SF minutes. You COULD cut Carey and Carpenter down to 25 mins...but I still think those guard mins might go to King and Harris before Tate. Harris is better at defending guards and King just shoots so well. Tate's best chance is to be really athletic in the Pickett and Roll and take some more minutes from Young/Golson.

In other words, kk has an absolute man crush on Carpenter and completely discounts guys like Young, Harris and King. Kids already in the program and that were major contributors to a MAAC championship team. Oh, and Tate, a kid good enough to play at the A10 level but will struggle to get 17 minutes a game at the MAAC level.

Tate could very well get 30 but I think it would come at the expense of Young and Golson first. Carpenter is bigger, faster with the ball, more athletic, and more well rounded than King and more skilled and versatile than Harris. It's going to put pressure on a lot of people's minutes. Yeah, I have a man crush. And I think it's justified.

You may be right, but I expect Carm plans to quicken the tempo some and reduce minutes a little for Pickett, Carey & Camper. Last year, those three guys were on the floor A LOT (Pickett - 37, Camper - 36, Carey - 31) ... and rightly so, there were limited options. This year, hopefully that changes, allowing them to be fresher down the stretch. Minutes will likely shift depending on opponents and matchups all year. We have that kind of versatility. Some games Tate can play the '5' 10-15 minutes, others we'll need to lean more on Young and Golson. If I were to guess now (and its really waaaay too early), I'd ballpark: Pickett - 33 Camper - 33 Carey - 27 Carpenter - 24 King - 17 Harris - 17 Tate - 24 Young - 15 Golson / BK - 10 Obviously, this assumes no injuries and no additions this year. If they add another immediately eligible player, all bets are off.

Ultimately Pickett's minutes will be determined by how effective Carpenter is at the point. If he's no more effective than Carey or King then anytime Pickett is out of the game we will see a 3 headed monster at PG (or 4 headed if Manny is in). That lineup will be used sparingly in big games which means a lot of games Pickett plays 37 to 40 minutes. If Carpenter does step in and look like a natural at the point then we gain both the ability to drop Pickett to 33 minutes a game but also to give him some time at the off guard and gain a little further rest.
