2022 recruiting question for the board: How is everyone feeling about Brendan Coyle? Everyone was all hot and bothered about not getting Amarri Tice - and then Carm pulls Coyle out of his back pocket. He's 8 spots higher than tice in the NERR rankings. He had an A-10 offer (older and from the previous coach, I know), which combined with his NERR ranking suggests he's a legit D1 scholarship level player despite concerns to the contrary. The year prior Coyle averaged 9.6 points per game and shot 41.5 percent from 3-point range during the Nike EYBL season. Teammate Chase Ross ranked # 7 is committed to Marquette. I think Carm may have gotten a steal - and one year is free.
So what happened with his recruiting? Injuries. He broke his shooting hand before the season opener, which caused him to miss about 10 games. Then he developed a MRSA infection in his elbow that turned into a hole about the size of a ping-pong ball in his arm. The bone is healed and the infection is healing. At 6'7, he could be a solid backup at the 3 or 4. Coyle and Eley are my contenders to be standouts in this class. Thoughts?

And if he’s not European, the chances of him being any good are slim….and sticking around IF he is good, even slimmer. I kid (sorta).

That type of infection involves fun stuff like sores, boils, or abscesses. Sometimes there needs to be an incision to drain them, leaving an unsightly hot mess on your arm. I doubt there was a literal hole that size burrowed down to bone in his arm, but I'm sure he had a nice chunk cut out. It can be a nasty infection though - highly resistant to antibiotics from what I've read about it.

Bottom line, I think the 2022 recruiting class is a lot better than many seem to think. I can't speak to the foreign rookies because there's just not enough info out there about them. But in Eley, Coyle, and Lane I think Carm upgraded the roster. The team got two knew shooters with 3 point shooting percentages over 40%, and the team just got a whole lot bigger. All three have competed against top notch competition and produced something. If they get nothing from Birgisson, Gribben, & Tekin but those other three work out, the class is still a success in my book. The consensus seems to be that even Gribben appears to be an upgrade over the 3rd string option at the 5 last season (Tertsea). He played prep at a good stateside school (Choate) against good competition and put up sterling numbers (13.5 points, 8.7 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game while shooting 38 percent from 3-point range). He also had good numbers in FIBA U18 play, which is also good competition. So now the team has two 6'10 dudes behind Stormo that are better than what was there last season. Everyone wanted size, well now they have it. The only disappointment I see is that the class doesn't include a surefire backup to McCollum by ay measure we are familiar with. Let's hope Tekin works out in that role.

I think Eley could be our sleeper I hope not cause he's the only one I'm expecting anything out of! If he winds up our sleeper it is cause no one else in the class amounted to anything. I'm hoping Eley is a really good freshman and at least one of the other guys turns out to be the sleeper.

I expect 20 minutes a game from Eley

You need at least two impact guys each year to build a program and likely more than that with the new transfer rules. We can't have this class turn out to only have one impact guy so need at least one other to emerge as a sleeper.

Im not sure how any of us, deep down inside, can expect much of anything from a walk on in year one. Its hard enough for a highly regarded, scholarship player, let alone a walk on with hardly any offers from anyone. I think we need to set the bar at almost nothing, anything above that is a great surprise.

Between injury concerns and talent concerns there isn't a guy beyond Eley that I wouldn't be surprised to see never play a meaningful minute for the Saints. So really hoping that someone can emerge from the rest of the class as that sleeper, if there isn't one then the program is going backwards and the 2023 class could be last chance for Carm.

Couldnt agree more with your assessment. Others on here seem to have all these steep goals for walk ons. Your point is right on.

I think we need to set the bar at almost nothing, anything above that is a great surprise. Coyle is a walking on his first year and will be on scholarship the next three, but make no mistake: he's a scholarship level player from day 1. He had offers from UMass along with Albany and is higher rated than Amarri Tice (who everyone wanted badly) on New England Recruiting Report. Coyle is at 40 while Tice checks in at 48. So if people are looking for a sleeper behind Eley, the smart money is on Coyle. He's a good bet to replicate what Jordan King did with his similar opportunity. newenglandrecruitingreport.com/rankings/new-england-class-of-2022
