mine have been beaten out of me. they were: top 3 finish in the maac as a regular occurrence. Post season play in 8 or 9 out of ten years. With 3 to 4 of those being NCAA appearances. Continue to recruit NY NJ PA area as it has been the lifeblood of Siena basketball. Recruit talented and athletic players that perform well in a up-tempo environment that pushes on offense and presses on defense. Create a culture and expectation of a style of play that becomes well known for "Siena basketball". Perform true coaching searches when necessary that result in a pool of highly talented candidates that include up-and-comers as well as veterans who have achieved success. they are: I expect Siena to finish at or near the bottom of the MAAC. I expect "coaching searches" to continue to be no more than a game of pin the tail on the donkey. I expect Siena to continue to diminish the importance of the mens basketball team while not sharing that information openly in order to collect more season ticket revenue until the fan base figures it out. 3 or 4 every 10 years to the NCAA? for a program that has been there 6 times in 40 years seems like a lot to ask, or expect. In a one bid league, even great teams sometimes don't make the NCAA, so asking them they make it every 3rd year is a real stretch. I do agree with your coaching take and hiring practices.

Siena:
1. Best facility in MAAC
2. Best fan base in MAAC
3. Best local media coverage in MAAC 4. Good, but maybe not the best , sponsors in the MAAC
5. Good , but maybe not best , individual donations
Worst:
1. Other than Sidney Johnson of FF, is there a worse coach than Patsos?
2. I don't know anything about the ad'S, BUT d'aRG IS CERTAINLY NOT THE RIGHT GUY TO RUN THE AD ( who else would give JP extensions for .500 records??)
3. It appears that schools like Quinnipiac , FF, and Iona have BOTs that actually care about their men's basketball team
Siena will not make progress unless the problem area's are solved by intelligent caring people.

I am a bit surprised so far, as to the lack of posters responding to this question (or some that aren't willing to go on record for some strange reason), as everyone seems to be able to come on this board with comments/observations on many subjects...............IF you post on this board, you are indeed (and one would think) a fan of Siena basketball, no matter how long you have followed them nor the distance/location from being able to attend games live...........have many of you decided to be ambivalent now on the state of affairs for the hoop program, or simply just don't care (I find that hard to believe because the vast majority are always on this board daily)............so let's go fluffers & haters, your chance to give your view................ AND maybe this thread can be PINNED towards the top of board (what do you think Tony) ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ? I think the lack of responses to an extent answers your question. Nobody knows what the heck to think/expect anymore. Here are my general thoughts on your question and the situation: I believed the attainable goals to be: In the mix to win the MAAC every year - EVERY YEAR Win the MAAC regular season crown and/or tournament at least 2 times every 4 years Play in the NIT or NCAA at least twice every 4 years Win at at least 2 NIT games and/or 1 NCAA game every 4-6 years Schedule a strong MM & low High major OOC (St Joe's, Penn St., Rhode Island, BC, etc. not NJIT, Bryant, Colgate, etc) Have each coach and class build on the work and accomplishments of those who came before them Have at least 1 end of the year 1st Team All-MAAC, 1 2nd and 1 3rd, plus have a freshman we know should be in contention for ROY but didn't get it because we've got strong upperclassmen Not expecting to win the NIT or a Sweet 16 game but want to the program to belong, be known and taken seriously It was SOOO close 8 years ago... No I have NO idea what to think/expect For those who worry about the professors griping about pay, budgets, etc. just remember the proof is in the pudding when the BBall team wins: The quantity and quality of applications goes up Donations go up Siena brand recognition and school pride go up Competitive sports a microcosm of life: how hard you work to be the best at your individual and team responsibilities matters what you do when nobody's looking matters (where are you at 5:15 - halfway home, what do you do in the off season - work in the weight room, run, shoot FTs or shooting opponents in the Call of Duty video game) In sports as in life there are winners and losers. Siena was a winner. Siena is not a winner anymore. Will Siena pick itself up and truly get back in the ring or continue to fade away?

Maker, Casey, Patsos, Masiello, and Johnson are probably all within a year or 2 of getting fired right now. Rice is still up in the air. Cluess, Baggett, Dunleavy, Reggie, and Dunne are all looking good for awhile. With 2 more big losing season the JRob boost will likely be lost for Rice who is sitting at .518 currently. Nick Rutherford is the heir apparent at PG to Tilghman. He will determine Rice's fate.

Off topic for a bit..
@marksingelais Anyone remember Stephan Jiggetts? He signed with Siena under Mitch Buonaguro, then spent a semester at UAlbany before transferring. Now starting as a graduate transfer for South Florida.
USF Men's Basketball @usfmbb Congrats to Stephan Jiggetts for being named to the @american_MBB Weekly Honor Roll after his 23 point effort in our win at Tulane!

You won’t see any fluffers respond to the post because they would rather take pot shots at the haters. At least the haters are willing to lay out the expectations.

I do agree with your coaching take and hiring practices. actually I believe that you miss the point. When one BUILDS a program over time, as Siena has done, you get your program to a point where you remain at or near the top. And had siena maintained that momentum at some point the league may get a second bid from time to time. Now... someone will argue "but but but the MAAC isnt like that. MAAC teams dont commit to that.... blah blah". The fact is that Siena made observable financial commitments to the program. They moved to a big arena (unlike most MAAC teams), they have a huge fan base in comparison to most programs in the country that are of similar size schools, They were financially investing in upgrading the on-campus facilities SUPPOSEDLY to be a top of line (for the MAAC) facility. The pursuit of corporate sponsorship. The investment from the community (Siena is the premier sports program of the capital region). All of these things put Siena in a DIFFERENT place than other MAAC schools. Where Siena went woefully wrong and essentially undid everything positive was how it hires coaches. Look at the last 4 and it says all you need to know.... Lanier, McCaffery, Buonaguro, Patsos. In its last four at-bats the hiring process is .250. so in closing... Siena did a lot of things right... but college basketball is all about the coach. The retards in charge have been utterly deplorable with regard to hiring. If I can sit in my living room and tell you that forcing the hire of a young african american coach is going to end bad (Siena was insistent on following the national trend rather than a true search and best candidate available when they hired Beyer, Hewitt, Orr, Lanier). I dont care what color or nationality you are... if youre the best candidate you should get the job. That wasnt how those searches were going. Fast forward to Buonoaguro. I (and a few others) despised this hire. I stated then that it would go down as the worst hire in Siena history... and again Siena following the national trend of promoting the assistant from within... Siena's problem was ... the assistant they promoted was aging out AND was already fired (BY A CONFERENCE FOE) as a head coach AND had the personality of a door knob. Then comes the "safety hire" in patsos. The problem with him is his behavior and laziness. You knew ALL about his behavior.. and that in and of itself should have been enough to stay away.

Exactly. I will never understand how anybody could dismiss these facts when hiring those coaches. The result was so obvious.

My expectation: We don't suck for 8 straight years. We routinely beat teams from lower level conferences. We are in the top-3 of the MAAC every year. I'd be OK with a rebuild year if the prior year or 2 were really good (ie: 1st / 2nd round of the NCAA). I don't ever want to be watching a CBI game again. Siena should routinely be in the mix for A10 or better recruits. I'm OK with diamonds in the rough but it is risky to try to build a whole team that way. I expect a challenging schedule that will result in a top 50 RPI. I expect to win. Make Siena Great Again!

My expectations are simple:
1) Competitive in the MAAC year in and year out.
Everything else will take care of itself.

Oh i am totally in agreement with the coaching issue. There is really no excuse for it at this point, other then certain people suck at their jobs. They may not have killed the golden goose yet, but have certainly beat the shit out of it.

My expectation is that it will not take 3 OT's for the team to score 59 points.
