I tend to agree about the down MAAC although I will say that the MAAC is ranked 20th per Kenpom... 2018 - 20th 2017 - 19th 2016 - 21st 2015 - 19th Maybe it's not down by as much as we think. I think what it is is that the top teams aren't as good as they typically are but there are more of them. Lots of 130 ranked teams instead of like 80 and 170. Conference, as a whole, is more middling. rankings aside, the old eye test shows that most if not all maac teams are seriously flawed.........nobody in this league right now is capable of stepping up on that national stage and taking a BIG down in March (unless that higher level team completely tanks).........also IMHO, the league is void of higher level talented players, you typically need a few to pull off the surprise when it matters most............. Like I said, it's a bit more middling rather than polarized this year. There are some higher level players though. For example, Canisius' Isaiah Reese comes to mind. For those who don't know, the kid averages 16.5 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 4.7 apg, 2.5 tpg, and 2.3 spg...while shooting .486/.900/.390

HoopDad, seems to me the fact we have had so many close games shows we have enough talent to win. The lack on in-game adjustments is maddening. And we rarely play to our strengths. Totally disagree with you on this one. I think why they are in games is two reasons: Kids play hard and most games compete to the end, talent is down across the board. Most of the mistakes that I see down the stretch are usually by individual players: getting beat on defense, not boxing out, unforced turnovers, poor shot selections, fouling, etc. cant' blame all that on the coaching adjustments when you see those kinds of basic mistake by the players.

Do you have some video examples of when mistakes aren't made by individuals? Curious comment - inquiring minds would like to know...who besides individuals make the mistakes you are referencing....

I agree with you Hoopdad on the mistakes being made by players at the end of game situations.I've said that before the kids have a responsibility also. But that being said i attribute that to be a young team guys being in positions that they haven't been in before.Like i said before your depending on freshman and seldom used sophomores from last year. That being said they still have the ability to win games.Like i said we haven't been beaten by double digits but Niagara was the closet. So i keep the faith for my SAINTS

How do you know? The kid is only a sophomore. 6-5 with some PG skills, can shoot, great rebounder, and is a ballhawk. For all we know, he could end up in the show. I saw the kid shooting from 30 without hesitation.

Do agree with you that youth has some to do with the Saints record. I just think with the current mix of talent, youth and coaching, this team will struggle to win games and their record is indicative of the reality of where they are collectively as a group right now. The fact that they have not been able to string 2 wins back to back at this stage of the season speaks volumes to me about this team. Unlike some others on here, I will continue to go to games, root for the team, enjoy the wins when they happen, not sweat to much the losses and renew my season tickets for next year.

This is yet another example of what little you know about people as you go on the attack to mask an idiotic statement you made in your attempt to deflect blame from our head coach onto the team. You failed to answer my question which emanated directly from your post. Did you consider at all that the head coach and his staff are apparently woefully unable or unwilling to invest the time needed to teach these kids the skills you are so quick to criticize them over? Watch them set and utilize screens - NOT - why not? They appear clueless on offense - does that remotely trigger any questions on what level of preparation they were given? Obviously JP's standard of practice excellence is nowhere near sufficient to carry over and actually win games. I will match my volunteer hours with any similar efforts you might put forth, I would venture to say my volunteer hours almost qualify for a half-time job ALL YEAR - I have time available because I am retired after a 40 year career serving our nuclear navy. And I was a volunteer during the last 10 years of my career - do you volunteer? Clearly, you know nothing of my skills but I guarantee you that humor is not a skill that soup kitchens or homeless shelters need - my volunteer services are provided to the YMCA helping youth and families in need along with the members of our branch.

You are an amazing human being... I obviously do not measure up. Perhaps when I am in my 70's I will be as great as you are. Have you ever been to a practice to see what is being taught? What the coaches are working on with players? What drills are being run and skills are being worked? Do you understand the fundamentals of the offense that Siena runs? Yeah, I get it, some of this is on the coaches, but to think that none of this is on the players, as you seem to want to pontificate on here, and only blame coaching, is way off base.

My apology Ricky. Sometimes I let these old timers on here, who's reference point for Siena dates back to the Catholic Cup and playing games at the Armory get under my skin. You are right I should respect my elders and ignore their foolish posts, even when they direct them at me. I'm Sorry and will try to do better. I was being so good for so many weeks too.

Yeah, I get it, some of this is on the coaches, but to think that none of this is on the players, as you seem to want to pontificate on here, and only blame coaching, is way off base. I can guarantee that I've been to more practices than you've been to live games. From Mike, to Bob, to Paul, to Rob, to Fran, to Mitch and yes, to JP's and I can tell you that JP's are the bottom of the barrel compared to the others. Fran/Mitch had scouting reports typically in the 25-30 page range for each opponent and all, yes ALL, of the players were required to read and memorize the key items. They were quizzed on it. They ran opponent's plays - ALL of them. JP's scouts were typically 3 pages (I was told that by Greg). I have read scouting reports and then gone to practices and watch how the team worked to them - ditto for games. I'm not pontificating as most on here know full well my level of history and support for this program. I stopped going to the once weekly open practice under JP - there was nothing to be learned - his practices, the ones I attended over his first three years, consisted of routine drills and many "baseball" games, 5 on 5 games - more show time than know time. I have gone to conditioning sessions and the staff did teach basics and they were reinforced with repetitive drills - never saw JP there. The offense Siena runs is the exact same offense he brought from Loyola - how did that work for him, it's as ineffective ALL game as ever? I'm not saying none of our problems are on the players - rather, I'm saying he's not coaching them or utilizing them in an effective way. They didn't apply to Siena, they were "evaluated" by him and asked to come. I've watched it for 4+ years and nothing changes. He has no ability to coach end game. He calls nonsensical time outs to stymie our own runs. He spends so much time facing the bench during live play it's f'n embarrassing. This is all probably new to you. What am I missing Coach?

It is obvious to me there are some generational differences on here when it comes to humor, communication and opinions on Saints basketball. It's all good, In the end we are all fans, who want what is best for Siena College and the Saints program. No rights or wrongs, just difference in opinion. I am sure MP and others will find fault with this post and attack me in some way. That's OK. I am a big boy, confident in my opinions and love the Saints as much as anyone having been a supporter and season ticket holder for 30 years and hope to be for another 30. Go Saints.
