Sick and tired hearing about Saint Fran. Go root for Iowa people! A little touchy aren't we? I don't root for "Iowa people" but I do root for Iowa hoop along with Maryland and ND. The only Iowa people I know are the McCaffery's, AKA Saint Fran, et al. oh boy the grammer police...you're cool.

I wasn't specifically trying to compare coaches or players - the only reason I looked up the stats to begin with was that my brain said "even when we had really good teams, we NEVER started off that well, right?" And, largely, that suspicion was confirmed. But, should have seen that the comparisons would come as an inevitability. I understand what you were doing. But why does his name even come up? It's history. Right. Cause we should just forget history. Why do you care?

He was a Siena coach who had success. It's totally appropriate to look back with fondness on good times. It's why people take pictures. Or do you frown on doing that, too?

I understand what you were doing. But why does his name even come up? It's history. It keeps coming up because he took a Siena Program up several notches proving that it can be done - we now have better resources - gotta believe Fran would have utilized the ARC renovations and dedicated practice facility to its max and recruited at Basabe like levels easily over and over again. He showed us how good coaches coach and how effective that can be on the big stage - even from within the MAAC. Everything Fran did was geared to move us higher and higher - and yes he left for greener pastures and we benefited from the actions that got him to the next level - he earned it and our Admin should have learned that hiring mediocrity in 50:50 Jumbo was a step down long term. Jumbo was a well known commodity and he just slid sideways with business as usual.........despite what he said when he got here..... Interesting that he won more NCAA tournament games with Siena then he has with Iowa in his seven years. Based on his lack of tournament wins with Iowa when many of those years he had very good players, I wonder if their fans are on the ledge or question his coaching chops? Since they sucked for so many years prior to him, they see him as a savior. Sometimes success is measured based on where you came from or were you've been.

Start a thread about him, add your memories and see who contributes. That's your prerogative on a message board. Include the link below that mentions him. I would love to know more about him. I've only seen Cunha in books. www.troyrecord.com/sports/20140201/on-the-record-siena-played-role-integrating-college-hoops

MP spot on. The hire of JP was an easy, lazy effort to try to bring the program back to its former years after a disastrous hire of MB. Will the school ever hire another Fran, not likely. Type of coach Fran is, a professional, controls their won destiny, will not let the bureaucrats tell them how to run the program. I disagree that there isn't another Fran out there. One both disciplined and calculating, with just the right amount of hunger, passion and the knowledge of the game to be a strategic master. We may have let one go in Tobin Anderson.

One both disciplined and calculating, with just the right amount of hunger, passion and the knowledge of the game to be a strategic master. We may have let one go in Tobin Anderson. Tobin Anderson is entering his 4th year as the head coach of the Spartans. Anderson holds an impressive 63-30 record (.700) in his three seasons at STAC. Anderson guided the Spartans to their best season in 2015-16 along with a trip to the NCAA tournament. The Spartans finished 27-5, winning the ECC Regular Season and the ECC Conference Championship to advance to the NCAA's. The Spartans played their first NCAA game on March 12th, earning an exciting 92-90 victory over Southern Connecticut, before falling, 77-73 in the next round to St. Anselm's College. The 2015-16 season was also highlighted by an exciting 90-58 win over NCAA Division I opponent, St. John's on November 4th.

Fran may have been an equal to JP in Technicals...hell for that matter Margaret might be right there with both of them. HOWEVER, his were usually not ill timed to take the wind out of the sails and 95% of the time he was defending his player.
Believe me, I had issues with what Fran let go under the radar for his 'star' but he was a master with smoke and mirrors here his first year and instilled a sense of pride in the players left for him that 'nobody' wanted. He made them a part of a championship run, and for that I will always respect him.

Fran knows how to play the game. Keep your stars eligible at any cost and hope you get away with it.

I enjoyed those years as well. It was lightning in a bottle and the team caught it. It was good while it lasted but it's gone. Odds are, we may never see that type of run again.
It's the CONSTANT comparisons to that era that makes the board hard to digest at times.
