Only posting this because I was curious as to what Siena's historical record was through six games under Saint Fran, so I looked it up, and thought some of you might have at least a passing interest.
Fran's Siena record through first 6 games of each season 05-06 – 4-2 (1-2 on road, beat UA in OT) (15-13 total, 132 KenPom) 06-07 – 3-3 (2-2 on road, beat UA in OT) (20-12 total, 149 KenPom) 07-08 – 3-3 (0-3 on road, Beat UA) (23-11 total, 92 KenPom) 08-09 – 3-3 (1-3 on road/Neutral court, UA was 7th game of season) (27-8 total, 67 KenPom) 09-10 – 4-2 (2-2 on road/Neutral court, UA was 8th game of season) (27-7 total, 59 KenPom)
This season's Siena line would read as such: 16-17 - 2-4 (0-4 on road, loss at UA)(2-4 total, 107 KenPom)
No agenda or conclusions to be drawn necessarily, aside from the reminder that it's hard to win away games in November.

I look at it like this...won the games we absolutely had to (Cornell, Pine-Bluff) lost the almost impossible game (Kansas) and actually played well. But you can't go 0-3 against GW, Asheville, and UA don't care if they were all on the "road". If you're a MAAC contender that can't happen. 3-0 OK that would be tough, 2-1 the expectation, 1-2 not good but 0-3 is awful.
Now you really put the pressure with OOC games still to come tomorrow at SBU, at FGCU, at Hofstra, Vermont, Bucknell - have to go 4-1 just to finish OOC play with a winning record.

You are correct hard to win away but that is also a scheduling challenge and falls directly to the coach and staff. However the board seems irate and rightly so over the poor coaching and game preparation for UA. Abysmal.

Fran never lost to UA !!!!!!!!!!!!! So very, very true - Fran recognized the importance of the game to Siena's fan base and took all the necessary steps he could to get a winning outcome - schedule set to guarantee sufficient days for rest/game preparation, closed practices, limited media availabilities, NO war of words/locker room motivational help via the media and PREPARATION - scouting and practice, practice, practice. He recognized it was not just another OOC game to the fans but took great pains to isolate and minimize the pressures on the team itself leading up to it. He would never admit it in public but it was a game he wished he didn't have to play....

MP spot on. The hire of JP was an easy, lazy effort to try to bring the program back to its former years after a disastrous hire of MB. Will the school ever hire another Fran, not likely. Type of coach Fran is, a professional, controls their won destiny, will not let the bureaucrats tell them how to run the program.

This fan base can't handle losses very well it has to move on past Fran, he hasn't been here in 7 years. Remember those days don't try to compare coaches or players to those days. If you think that's the norm I can see why you guys hate the coaches for not winning like Fran did. Also remember he left for greener pastures.

Fran's record before January was never good but he had the team rolling for Jan/Feb/March and we won some up games. The problem with JP is that going into year 4 I have no confidence that the end of the year will be any better than now. They could turn things around but did we really need to lose to UA like that!?!?
I was personally in favor of hiring JP. I'm now in favor of moving on - if he doesn't win the regular season outright and the MAAC tourney. Any less worse than a 13 seed in the big dance and off with his head (metaphorically). I don't want to hear about NIT or CBI. Sure I'll take the NIT but I'd still want to move on. If the NIT is the best Jimmy can do after 4 years and a team full of seniors, he's lost his touch.

I wasn't specifically trying to compare coaches or players - the only reason I looked up the stats to begin with was that my brain said "even when we had really good teams, we NEVER started off that well, right?" And, largely, that suspicion was confirmed. But, should have seen that the comparisons would come as an inevitability.

Well going to the NIT now means winning the regular season title and getting upset in the conference tournament or finishing second and having a monster season. If we went to the NIT I wouldn't be satisfied but it would be a pretty good season. Since Jimmy has never won the MAAC regular season title it's probably more likely Siena finishes 2-4 and wins the MAAC tournament which I'd gladly take. No interest in a C tournament with a senior laden team and they probably don't want it either (look at the Morehead State game last year). If Siena doesn't play in a major postseason tournament I'd be fine with moving on but Siena isn't firing JP. Now perhaps JP will sense the heat he's under and will look towards another job.

It's history. It keeps coming up because he took a Siena Program up several notches proving that it can be done - we now have better resources - gotta believe Fran would have utilized the ARC renovations and dedicated practice facility to its max and recruited at Basabe like levels easily over and over again. He showed us how good coaches coach and how effective that can be on the big stage - even from within the MAAC. Everything Fran did was geared to move us higher and higher - and yes he left for greener pastures and we benefited from the actions that got him to the next level - he earned it and our Admin should have learned that hiring mediocrity in 50:50 Jumbo was a step down long term. Jumbo was a well known commodity and he just slid sideways with business as usual.........despite what he said when he got here.....

It just doesn't happen that much. LaSalle and Siena thats it in 30 years.

Sick and tired hearing about Saint Fran. Go root for Iowa people! A little touchy aren't we? I don't root for "Iowa people" but I do root for Iowa hoop along with Maryland and ND. The only Iowa people I know are the McCaffery's, AKA Saint Fran, et al.
