Steady progress over the three years Fran has been there. The future looks bright, with great freshmen gaining experience this year. I look for Iowa to move into at least middle of the Big 10 next year, possibly 4th or 5th. And he's filling the arena with excited fans. 4th or 5th is tough to achieve in the Big Ten. The Big Ten is the best league in the country and recently being in the top 4 usually means being in the top 10 in the country and competing for the national championship. That may happen, but it is not going to be a common occurrence. Maybe when this group are upperclassmen and there are other solid recruiting classes behind them that goal can be achieved. Next year may be too soon.

Iowa also has one of the weakest schedules in the Big 10, playing Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Illinois only once each. This may help their record but hurts RPI and SOS. They play AT Michigan, AT Ohio state, only getting MSU on their home court. They play Indiana, Minnesota, and Wisconsin Twice, all teams better than Illinois this year. Their B10 schedule looks balanced to me. Fraschilla has them as the first team out, so they are the definition of a bubble team. They will need a few signature wins to bolster their chances.

Now 3-6 in the Big 10. Not looking too good.

They are at least a lock for the NIT with a 8-10 or even 7-9, which they will easily achieve. Easily achieve? They are 3-7, probable loses still coming to Indiana, Minnesota, and Illinois, possible loses to Purdue(already lost once to them) and probable split with Nebraska. Probable that 7-11 is the best they can hope for.

I see that you conveniently waited until they lost 4 out of 5 to post your retort, with two of them being in OT and another by a 3 pointer. Nonetheless, I stand by my post. They will EASILY achieve 7-11, not a doubt in my mind. With 7-11 they will be in the NIT. 8-10 would be my guess, and 9-9 is still a possibility.

They will still go 7-11 and will be one of the top seeds in the NIT hosting a first round game. There is zero chance he doesn't make it through at least the end of next season.

Fran has 7 years on his contract - Iowa and the admin love him. He has a young team and the freshman point guard has cost them dearly late in games, including last night, several times. Back-to-back ranked recruiting classes - will be a Top 5 B1G team next year. Could just as easily be 8-2 or 7-3 right now in B1G play with a more experienced point guard. Make no mistake, Iowa loves Fran and he'll have Iowa a perennially ranked/Sweet 16 program soon.

St., Ohio St and Wisc.) in his own conference, much less be a consistent Top 20 team. I can see him fighting with Purdue and Minnesota in the middle, with one of them emerging every 3-4 years with a veteran team. Do I really need to name 15 other programs in the country he'll never catch?

He already has Bo Ryan's number. He doesn't have to be a Top 15 program to be a ranked/2nd weekend of Tourney team year in and year out.

Do I really need to name 15 other programs in the country he'll never catch? I think Fran will do alright at Iowa. He already has rebuilt them from the mess Lickliter left much like he did at Siena after Lanier. I don't see them being in the sweet 16 every year but I'm sure he'll eventually get them there once or twice. Iowa is not Ohio St or Michigan St they don't expect national titles or at least shouldn't but if he gets them into the NCAAs 3-4 times over a 5 year period they'll be happy with him. He didn't need to make the NCAAs this year. Next year will be his fourth season so there will be some pressure to get there but he still won't be on the hotseat. Maybe by this fifth year he will if they don't make the NCAAs.

I think he'll do allright too, just not a perennial Top 20 team. Purdue comparison works. He'll NEVER be better than the top 4 programs in the Big 10 on a consistent basis. Maybe he can catch Wisconsin, maybe.
He'll have a great team every once in awhile like I said. Make the Sweet 16, and then, back to the middle, while Mich, Mich St, Ind and Ohio St stay on top.

The main point is he is way better than Mitch. Always has been, always will be. He is smarter, better recruiter, better in game coach, and plays the "system" better. I agree with Sienadan, it won't be long before Iowa is a top 25, NCAA participant each year, occasional sweet 16, etc....He'll eat Wisconsin for lunch, loves crushing those low scoring teams lol. He needs and probably has on his roster the Franklin, Hasbrouck types, giuys with not only the skills but the will to win, especially in crunch time.

No one out here said he wasn't better than Mitch...it isn't even close! lol But we definitely differ on what he'll do at Iowa. Fran will never get the HS All-Americans it takes to be consistently in the top 20 programs. There's nothing wrong with being like Purdue and Painter. Like I said, a top 5 finish in his own league would be a great accomplishment.

Yeah, he's 3-2 against Wisconsin, but when Fran wins 71% of his games (139-57) in the Big Ten, and averages 26 wins the next 6 years like Bo has, you can get cocky about him and his Hawkeyes.
