Mel Basabe yesterday in 7 point win at Northern Iowa played 13 minutes had one rebound, one foul, two points and three turnovers. I think he would fit in with the Saints.

Iowa has a very deep and athletic team. Basabe is a key player in their rotation and was, essentially, Fran's building block for that program. Siena would have been lucky to have him.

He had a great freshman year but is just "another guy" in the Big 10. That said he would have been a GREAT MAAC player.

Yeah, but you have to wonder how he would have done under this regime here.

HoHoHo!
Didn't Basabe answer that question by leaving before regime began?
Basabe too smart for Mitch.

Bit of a must win for Iowa at home against #22 Mich State tonight and Basabe is trying to close this one out - playing great down the stretch. Iowa without their leading scorer Marble with a 3 point lead with a minute to go. They're a young team still - have had a tough time closing.

It might not have been a must win situation, but getting the W against one of the good Big Ten teams would be a definite positive on Iowa's resume. I had them going 8-10 in conference with the eight Ws coming against this year's four weak sisters of the Big Ten. Iowa has been close and are definitely improved from last year even though their record at the end of the year may not show it. If they have any hope of getting a winning record and going to the NCAAs they will need some quality wins in conference. Their OOC is in the 330s, one of the worst in the country, and they only have one quality win and a bad loss in the OOC. Given the OOC I think they would have to be two or three good in conference wins to have a sniff at the NCAAs this year.

Mel had a great game tonight. It's great reading the Iowa board. Some of their "fans" think an NIT bid may be a streach.

Iowa will easily get an nit bid if they finish at least 8-10 in conference.

Getting back to Melsahn, I watched the 2nd half of the Iowa/Michigan State game last night. Iowa tanked at the end and lost at home, but Melsahn had a 3-minute stretch at the end where he was single-handedly keeping them in the game. I don't know if he consistently plays that well or aggressive, but it left me wondering why his overall minutes are so limited. Does anyone know?
He definitely could have been a force in the MAAC with the right coaching.

If there is a must game for Iowa, it is today at Northwestern. This is a game they have to win to get to 8-10 or better. A loss here definitely makes it hard to achieve without stealing a win against one of the good Big 10 teams. That said, every game is a must win for Siena, so Fran has little to be concerned about in comparison.
