very interesting reading the opinions on this.
I'm white, but I also know that there is still some very deep rooted soreness on the topic of racism in this country. Plenty of it justifiably so. What I see right now is a backlash of whites in this country who feel left behind. Frankly, many are feeling the very same results of racism that non-whites experienced for generations and still do today. On one side you have the whites lashing out as middle class and poor whites struggle to find jobs etc. On the other side you have minorities who experience the often closeted racism that still exists. They too struggle to find non-existent jobs with little hope. It is bubbling over into public exhibitions as both sides react/interact. Much of this is festering beneath the financial divide of upper middle class and above. Those that find themselves in this group cant seem to fathom what is going on and why these issues are bubbling over.
There is such a downward pressure on wages/benefits driven by big box stores and corporate wholesale of the country in the name of driving that ticker up. As our society class structure flattens and there is an ever increasing fight for what little scraps remain you will see all sides lashing out. Both sides are feeling what appears to be the racial divide yet it is really being driven by the crushing financial pressure that is creating mass infighting over little available opportunity. We off-shored slavery to Asia, we just dont have to see it any more. Out of sight out of mind and we enjoy the cheap products as the outcome. As the pressure downward builds we are seeing the true results. Less and less opportunity and more and more in-fighting over the scraps that fall from the table.
I see the Robert Lee event as yet another symptom ... we continue to fail to address the real issues. Saying that this is ludicrous is a simple of way of side stepping asking the tough questions of why people may feel the way they do. Some may simply be able to side step the whole issue for others it will be extremely emotional.
Some of you simply wont see it. MOST but not all who attend schools like Siena are middle class and above and plenty of those folk's life experiences wont allow them to see it.
I hope things turns around. Because if it doesnt.. as the class structure flattens there will be more and more of us that wind up on the bottom.
To me, yes it doesnt seem like a big deal... but I am also not carrying around generations of baggage that still rears its head from time to time today. I try to have some empathy.

I was talking about the nickname not his birth name Read my post above yours I read both and you quoted me. You explained where his birth name came from and that had nothing to do with what I said. So I clarified my post.

I visited the African American museum in DC the other day. It is a must see for all Americans. The struggle from slavery to Jim Crow and the civil rights bill. We are one race...the human race and it has taken us a long time to get where we are but we have a long way to go. Racism was the excuse to treat a group of human beings like property for hundreds of years. The color of ones skin will not be an issue one day. Until then Americans must open their eyes and do the right thing. The hate will die

Thank you SaintsFan and PPC for your posts on racism, society and the recent events that had a minor impact on our Rob Lee. No hysterics, finger pointing or ranting, just plain-spoken, thoughtful comments. Good job by both of you.

As usual you wish to continue a fight...i bow to you superior abilities Sky......you said: "The name DID NOT come from a confederate...Lee is a very common Asian name. He did not "pick" his name...it is his birth name", obviously referring to Rob's birth name, not his nickname. When you stressed "DID NOT" you were clearly reacting negatively to what you interpreted as a mistake by PPC. But she just as clearly did not make any reference to Rob's birth name, only the nickname. You made a mistake. No big deal. But don't throw this back at PPC by saying she is continuing a fight. Just admit that you read her comment wrong, and be done with it.

thank you for sharing such sincere observations mr administrator however I think your assertion is invalid - post hoc ergo propter hoc.
'We off-shored slavery to Asia, we just dont have to see it any more. Out of sight out of mind and we enjoy the cheap products as the outcome.'
This rationalization in particular stood out - the history of slavery is older than the bible, trying to define it in one sentence - in an essay on racism, is ludicrous.
Twice you refer to 'the flattening of the class structure', is this a media cache phrase ?
At the risk of losing my ballboy status I ll offer this solution.
Everything on earth has a soul, an innate compass between good and evil. The first commandment says you are the lord thy God and shall be loved with all thy heart and all thy soul. As to the history of the world and it s sins I offer John 3:16
Respect for others begins with obedience and respect for yourself - that s the responsibility of a civil society

This is why espn should just produce sports and not try to become the news. It was a low level (7th team) announcer doing a low level game, that's it. Sports and politics don't mix. Stick to the games.

Okay, I work for a big corporation so I have a sense for why ESPN made the move on our "General"'s work assignment. It's not PC--it's business. Why have one of your employees--and your company-- become part of a joke, or part of a controversy, unnecessarily? Robert's assignment from one game to another harmed no one and precluded a distraction that wouldn't have helped him or the network. A smart move for all concerned.

About 100 people are going to watch this game. MSESPN made it an issue by moving the General to another game. People thought it was so ridiculous they leaked it to Outkick's Clay Travis. In the end great pub for the General- a really good up and coming broadcaster.
