Penn, Horn, Clareth, Degnan, Oduro is best lineup I think.
Maybe even one that's small with Camper or Shivers.
I think those are the most individually all-around impactful players we have.
If Smithen found some offense he could rise but not sure he will.
I think the backcourt of Penn and Horn is a major key to the season. 2 PGs who can both play either off the ball or on it.

I would go with Richard as the starting pg unless he is beat out. He has the game and the experience to run the show. He was not given the opportunity with Wright playing 40 mins per game. Richard Nico shivers Degnan Friday I would start there and let everyone compete to round out the top 7 Looks like Penn from people are actually seeing

Locks to start: Nico, Degnan and Shivers. IF eligible, Prince starts at center. PG, I'm going 60% Penn, 40% Smithen Penn better, but JP may want to go with senior with an relatively inexperienced group.
*there were a few board members at the pick-up yesterday, and I'd be shocked if any of them werent overly impressed with Penn. If I'm a stranger walking into that gym yesterday, I'd guess Penn was the GW transfer, and Roland was the incoming RS freshman.

Penn is the best PG on the roster. Watched him outplay GW transfer all day yesterday. Much better than I thought. Shocked if he isnt our starting PG next year. ps-spoke with Richard yesterday and he's probably 5'11". He can fill it up, but he's a lead guard, not a point. Makes you wonder if the transfer is worth it or should we get a kid at another position - transfer helps with class balance though

If I'm a stranger walking into that gym yesterday, I'd guess Penn was the GW transfer, and Roland was the incoming RS freshman. "Wilson said Oduro is scheduled to enroll at Siena in late June. He has the grade-point average and test scores to be eligible to play immediately, according to Wilson." "He's had to work hard from what he was doing in Canada,'' Wilson said. "Since he's gotten here, he's been a 3,0 student every since he touched down on campus." That quote comes from the Singelais article. This sounds like he's solved any NCAA eligibility issues. Also, if he were worried about Siena letting him in academically, wouldn't he have asked for a release from his LOI once the bigger schools showed interest? I'm sure those schools would let him in. Personally, I'd go with Penn, Nico, Shivers, Degnan, and Oduro. Khalil, Horn, Smithen, and Friday getting significant minutes off the bench. That 9 sounds like a nice rotation.

Thats why he picked Siena

Based on what I saw yesterday, Penn may well be the best PG, but I have not seen Horn play yet. If yesterday is indicative of Penn's game, the fans should be pleased.

www.hudl.com/video/3/3622470/58cc045a420fce133432b185Watch how Horn adjusts and creates shots. The three best and most adaptable handles are owned by Clareth, Penn, and Horn. They will make plays and put points on the board. They all can score from all 3 levels of the half court. Those three will lead this team. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I really like Horn's tape. There are several full games of his on YouTube, if you are interested. I don't think he'll have quite the immediate impact that Penn or Oduro will have next season, but I think he'll fill the role Ryan Oliver played on the 2015-16 team. He's not explosive off the bounce, but he can get his shot off, seems pretty crafty around the rim, has a good handle, and is unselfish. He was also clearly a leader on the floor. Shivers had a really nice freshman season, and grew as the season went on. He's a good defender, fights on the glass, finishes at the rim well. I'd start him over Horn to begin the year, but I expect Horn to play a big role for us.

Been nice reading the follow-up posts. In a lot of ways I hope you all are right and that Richards, Penn, or Horn can beat out Smithen because that means there's great competition and improved play.
A few comments - first let me admit that I've had very little exposure to each of the three that have been mentioned that may beat out Smithen for starting role and mins at PG. Richards to me is a slightly smaller version of Rick Williams and I'm not sure he's as good a slasher. I also haven't seen enough from him to see him as our PG. Penn - is small, had no offers and in what little I've seen of him on tape I am not impressed. Horne - with very very few exceptions his defenders were glued to the floor in his highlights. That won't happen in MM D1 ball. I remain concern about his defensive lateral quickness.
Smithen - is long for MAAC level PGs, is super quick, bouncy and calm.
Let the battle begin! :-)

If I'm a stranger walking into that gym yesterday, I'd guess Penn was the GW transfer, and Roland was the incoming RS freshman. I agree with HJ that Penn looks very, very good. He has obviously improved since he arrived in January, but that is likely due at least in part to just being thrown into the mix in mid-year and trying to catch-up with guys who had been in the system a whole lot longer than him. He had to be nervous at the beginning. He has put on 7-8 pounds, and is shooting much better. But he is still really quick, an excellent ballhandler and hustles his brains out. Only shortcoming is that he is, in fact, a bit short. Playing he and Khalil at the same time could be problematic in terms of defending other teams' guards. That's one area where Kadeem has an advantage. But this team will have a lot of interchangeable parts, and a lot of what looks to be quality depth. I suspect that a number of what we would traditionally consider backcourt guys (1s and 2s) are going to be on the floor at the same time, playing as 3s and even 4s. Was it KK who mentioned the other day seeing this team playing more in the style that we've seen Monmouth use the past few years? I think he's exactly right. Friday's (not Sammy) workout was just pick-up hoop, but you had to like what we were seeing. Speed, quickness and hustle, and guys who could put the ball in the basket. Friday (Sammy this time) has dropped about 15 pounds according to the coaches, and looked fit and strong. I like Kevin Degnan a lot. He can shoot, and he does a lot of things well. Shivers is solid. Khalil can score. Wish he hadn't gotten hurt last year. Might have made a difference for us. Kadeem sat out. Had shoulder surgery a few weeks ago; says he expects to be back and ready to play around mid-June. Nico was Nico. Scored a bunch of points, and was very aggressive with the ball. Not the least bit shy about getting his shot up. But they kept going in, so why not? I don't know what the other guys who were there though about Jordan Roland, but I liked what I saw. He wasn't spectacular by any means, but I thought he was mostly trying to just fit in with a bunch of guys he's never met before. Plus he was on Nico's team, and Nico had the ball a lot, and was taking most of the shots. Looks like he's 6'1"-6'2", medium build. I though he was quick offensively and defensively (made some nice defensive plays). Nice jumper, handles the ball well, a couple of nice drives to the basket with a quick first step. Seems to have a nice all-around game. I think he would be a valuable addition to the team.

I will say though that my expectations of Siena are largely contingent on a foreign trip. Patsos needs time to figure things out.
If he doesn't get that, they may not find the right lineup until January.
There will be a lot of politics of old vs. new guys this year to sort through. Even Griffin started before Brookins finally got the ball.

I don't expect a ton of non-conference success, regardless of any foreign trip we take. We will be playing a really tough schedule. Bucknell, Vermont, and Charleston are all road games against teams that won more than 25 games last year and bring back most of their production. We very likely won't beat Louisville or Memphis either. FGCU and St. Bonaventure will also likely be top 100 teams and will be tough, but at least we get them at home. I'll be looking more at how we play than results in the non-conference, considering all the teams I listed other than maybe Memphis (they lose everyone) would probably be favored to win the MAAC if they were in our conference. Honestly, I'd be pleased with 5-6 wins in the 13 game non-conference slate and hope for 10-12 wins in the MAAC. That would put us around .500 and would set us up for a bye in the MAAC Tourney. With the tourney on our home floor, we have a chance to pull some upsets and make the dance, especially with a weak MAAC. If not, I'd be all for a CBI/CIT run since we have a young team.

Are the haters all on vacation or have they just decided not to hijack a positive thread ? Any way I thank the nabobs of negativism for saving us from their constant criticism of Siena Basketball for even a day.
