I just don't see anybody but Kadeem Smithen as the Saints PG next year. He is very quick laterally He is smooth He surprises opponents with his quickness, hands and elevation on D He will get more comfortable - Coach allowing this to happen of course....

I love Kadeem's energy and attitude when he's on the floor, and I think he has the ability to be a very solid player for us. I just don't think he's a point guard. Whenever Patsos asked him to run the show, he seemed lost and deferred to Lavon. All your observations about his game are correct, but he needs time to develop as a point guard. Roman Penn is a natural point guard who will have been on campus for 10 months by the time we play our first game next season. He also could have some game experience if we do an international trip, which was mentioned in another thread. I expect him to start, with Kadeem being utilized in both guard spots off the bench.

On paper, Penn is the better shooter and perhaps the better all-around presence.
Also, I don't think it's a coincidence that they brought in Penn early. I think he was brought in here for the last semester to get a headstart on learning the team so he could take the reigns faster and make a bigger impact as a frosh.

Roman Penn ridiculously early stat estimation:
12 ppg 42% FG% 33% 3pt% 78% FT% 4.4 apg 2.5 tpg 3.5 rpg 45 steals 8 blocks

I still believe Richard is the starting pg. He knows how to run a team if allowed to

I think Richard is more of a Hymes-type player. He's a great shooter and can run some simple pick-and-roll offense, but I don't think he's a true floor general. By all accounts, Penn is. There's definitely a role for Khalil on this team, but I don't think starting point guard is that role.

I'm guessing/going with Penn, with Kadeem as back-up. I wouldn't be surprised if they basically split the 40 mins almost equally. If you want to play up tempo and have players fresh you'll probably be playing 8-10 players - all with significant mins 22-28 mins for one group and 12-18 for another (with spot mins for anyone else).

Penn should be backing Richard up next seaaon.

Whoops, thanks PPC, I can't believe I forgot about Richard. I need to add him into the mix at PG as well; but I wouldn't be surprised with Richard also getting time at SG too. I still like the idea of playing 8-10 guys all significant mins; few if any individual over 30.

I think Richard will surprise some fans if he gets the opportunity to run the show as the pg. He really understands the game and gets his teammates involved first.

Penn is the best PG on the roster. Watched him outplay GW transfer all day yesterday. Much better than I thought. Shocked if he isnt our starting PG next year.
ps-spoke with Richard yesterday and he's probably 5'11". He can fill it up, but he's a lead guard, not a point.

Richard is a solid defender for his size and knows the game. He came to Siena to run the show behind Wright. Penn should be backing Richard up next seaaon. If Richard was intended to succeed Wright, he would have gotten more run. Instead, his minutes slowly dwindled and Smithen was the backup 1. I think Wright's role going forward will be instant offense 3 point specialist off the bench. The starting point job is likely a battle between Penn and Smithen. Next season's starting lineup likely looks something like this: PG - Penn or Smithen SG - Shivers SF - Clareth PF - Degnan C - Friday or Oduro Of that group, only Degnan and Clareth are locks. Everyone else has to compete for a spot. Camper, Horn, Richard complete the playing rotation. I think Fisher has played himself onto the end of the bench.

Thanks for the insight HJ. I'm glad we landed Penn and that he's getting all this extra experience. Based on the amount of point guards for 2017 still getting offers, I think it's safe to say he would have gotten plenty of offers if he had waited to sign. His prep team alone has 6 guys going D1.
I'm fascinated by Khalil Richard. He looked so good in the St. Peter's, Manhattan and Iona games before he hurt his ankle; them was never the same. His role diminished because he was a shell of himself out there. Just as we saw with JO as a freshman, it takes so much longer to recover from an ankle sprain than you'd think. Never saw a true point guard but certainly an asset with his quickness and shooting ability. I think he'll be a solid contributor for us off the bench in a 6th man-like role.

I would go with Richard as the starting pg unless he is beat out. He has the game and the experience to run the show. He was not given the opportunity with Wright playing 40 mins per game.
Richard Nico shivers Degnan Friday
I would start there and let everyone compete to round out the top 7
