Yes, my first instinct on Kyle Young was 'really, that's how you use your first scholarship?'.... But then JC got Burns and Young started grabbing all kinds of rebounds so I'm willing to give the kid a chance to be our dirt worker...especially since he won't have to play a lot if he disappoints. Sometimes you need that effort guy.

Am I the only one that watches this and not get it? Sure Young’s a big kid but my initial reaction is still the same after watching this, he just looks like a plotter and not athletic. Not sure how his game is going to translate next year.Personally I just don’t get it. Guess I’ll need to see him in person. I feel same way-- I'm sure JC knows the MAAC isnt the NEC where you go with that type big man, to me Young looks like an AE or NEC type big man, instead of the 6"7", 6'8" sometimes 6'9" athletic bouncy type big men we usually see in the MAAC - but until I see the kid I'll hold off - his rebound numbers are impressive in HS saying that, we could have used that type of aggressive rebounding yesterday, that first half we were destroyed on the glass...……..we did a much better job of holding our own in the 2nd half plus OT's, but could have used a physical player to box out, those second chance boards killed us as Quinny took advantage of them every single time...……..just food for thought...……………...

I had the same reaction t Ryan Rossiter and how skinny he was and look at him. Generally bigs at this age can surprise up more than smaller guys so I’ll wait and see.

A disclaimer: I pay little to no attention to HS hoops these days and do not watch many HS highlight/hype videos - also this may have already been posted earlier in the thread. So please take this opinion with an enormous grain of salt. With that said - I DID end up half watching most of this game from January this year with Kyle Young (#33 in White). My initial takes are that he is a big body and not overly athletic, however he does have a real rebounding instinct (a nose for the ball if you will) and is ACTIVE on the boards, not just reaching over dudes' heads. There were times he over-aggressively went for offensive boards and then was super late getting back on transition D - not faulting him for this because he might be instructed to go after every rebound - but that kind of thing can burn you at the higher level. I wasn't keeping notes the whole time and there's a bunch of instances of him rebounding but here were a few moments of the game you could check out. 23:02 - a little dribble action from the perimeter, doesn't look to be a threat driving 27:20 - has a nice high post move, displaying some nice footwork on a spin move "and-1" play. This would be the one offensive play of his that would make you sit up in your seat a little bit. 28:55 - is completely un-checked for the Defensive rebound, but the board is going to the side of the basket towards two other players and he sniffs it out/isn't content to just let the ball come to him. 34:02 - team is clearly looking to go to him - he eventually gets a slipped in bounce pass for an easy deuce. Am I the only one that watches this and not get it? Sure Young’s a big kid but my reaction is still the same after watching this as it was the first time I saw video, he just looks like a plotter and not athletic. Not sure how his game is going to translate next year.Personally I just don’t get it. Guess I’ll need to see him in person. As I mentioned I'm not a good evaluator of HS talent, but I don't disagree with you. I'd posit that the coaching staff likes his size (the old you can't teach height adage) and his aggressiveness, and they hope that once he gets into the conditioning program he sheds a bit of weight and improves his foot speed.

All a guy really needs to do is rebound and make FTs to be useful at this level. At least the kid knows he's a center and has no illusions of anything else. That's a start.

I like Mikes game. He’s a tough kid. Knows how to play and can shoot. Won’t blow you away with his athleticism, but he’s got enough to play in this league. Agreed. He’s a worker with a chip on his shoulders (for good or for bad) Iona could be a tough spot due to the fact they will recruit ober you in a second with a grad transfer or transfer. Thought he was a MAAC level/NEC level player.

This team, for next year, is still in desperate need of a rim protector. Especially if we plan on real “Mayhem” next year. A 6’8” bouncy shot blocker should be staffs priority. When I see Young, I see Fisher all over again. Which isn’t a bad thing, but not what you need to win MAAC titles.

Young absolutely doesn’t wow you athletically, and he doesn’t seem to be the type of player that you’ll feed in the post all the time.
That said, Jamion prioritized him as much as any recruit we had this summer. We were two and three deep at many of his AAU games. Obviously, he sees something with this kid. He’s a smart kid, can pass, he rebounds well, and he knows his role.

Young is a wide body ... I see him being the freshman that gets the most run next year backing up Burns and pushing Burns to the 4 at times.

He reminds me of Steve Mc Coy. He was one of the best inside players Siena ever had. Had a nose for the ball and was in great position. You don't need a leaper to be a good rebounder or defensive player. We had a pretty good player from So. Indiana who wasn't fast and not a leaper. Was overlooked by major colleges. I think his name is Bird.

Yet your point is accurate he was not NBA athletic, but was one of the best of the NBA.
