Heard today that the coaches are considering a sit 1, play 1 transfer. Some research tells me it is 6’4 2G Kamari Newman from Oakland U. Averaged 9 and change last season, shot 35% from 3. Spent a year at George Mason before transferring to Oakland. Was first team All-Detroit as a junior along with Cassius Winston, among others. Believe he is Bob Simon’s recruit.

Another guy with regional ties that could be Simon (if you don’t know for a fact it’s Newman) is Deleon Brown, 6-4 guard transferring from Colorado who is also a sit 1, play 1. From Grand Rapids. Would be fine with either. Neither are PGs. Newman seems like a solid shooter and good athlete. Having a sit-out guy in general makes sense since all 12 scholarship guys right now are eligible. Question you have to weigh is whether taking Newman, Brown, or whoever else we’d be looking at is worth the opportunity cost of no sit-out transfer.

I would think with the kid from Oakland you have a kid that can average double figures for us and is insurance if Pickett leaves next year. I would assume they don’t see any no siy outbkids that they want and will play this year

Not a big fan of sit one play one transfers unless they are really good and especially not when they are already on to their third school. Newman's PER was 7.8 with George Mason and 13.6 with Oakland. Would take that as a grad transfer but nothing there to suggest he's going to be such an impact guy that you burn a scholarship for a year just to hope he's still around the following year. Plus adds one more returning guard that will make it more difficult to recruit another impact guard in 2020.

If the kid isn’t a problem, the sit 1 play 1 is perfect. Kid would be a ready-made starter and all 13 guys can’t play anyway.

Agreed.. like this much more if there was a possibility of getting a waiver and have two years at Siena- as it is, he stands to lose a year because of his transferring. For some reason Oakland has a ton of transfers the last few years

Good job, Matt will be solid addition to Saints back court that needs some depth.. From Carm on Matt
"His work ethic and basketball IQ are second to none."
We dont need 8 stars-- we need a kid that give us minutes in the back court and looks like Carm thinks Matt is that guy. Here's to hoping Carm is right!!

Any word on the final ship?
Are we still working on offering someone or do you think they’ll hold onto it for maybe a midterm transfer?

Surprised there are still a lot of guys available in the transfer portal at this late date. Ashton-Langford still hasn’t found a home yet.
