Anyone know why Friday didn't play? He told me he has a groin injury. Because I asked, in case that wasn't clear. 😄

My take on Siena's scrimmage and the season:
1.) 3 Pt Shooting - While it's nice to make them, people forget that once the season starts Siena has only averaged 15 three point attempts per game over the last 3 years...by far the least in the MAAC. Iona shoots them like 26 times a game on average. We don't. We shoot the 2 and out tough teams inside. That's our game. We can shoot the three serviceably, but we don't. So there's not much to talk about here. We have enough to get by. That's all we need.
2.) Rotation not going to be the same - Siena played without Smithen or Friday, two players who will probably get a fair amount of minutes and Patsos didn't need to see Long...especially given the pending 3 game suspension. He knows what he can do. So there's no need to over analyze his minutes. Smithen and Friday should both make the defense even better and it looked pretty good when it mattered already.
3.) FT Shooting - Not worried in spite of the bad showing. Siena has bad games but they typically shoot 71-72%. That's good enough. I expect they'll be there once again. But Siena also attempts the most and I think without Oliver and Wormley that they could attempt even more this year.
4.) Defense - There seems to be more quickness and defensive playmaking ability on the perimeter this year. Siena will get more points in transition this year off steals. With Wright back this goes without saying but also Richard has a better handle than Wormley and is a better attacker on the break. Also, Smithen/Shivers vs. Oliver/LaRose looks like a big defensive and transition gain for us. Siena is going to force a lot of turnovers. Last year, without Wright, they were 5th at just over 6 per game. I'd say this team forces closer to the 8.3 per game that Monmouth does now. Wright, alone, adds at least 1 additional steal per game.
5.)Rebounding - We already led the league in rebounding margin by a fair amount last year. Wright is arguably the best rebounding PG in the league. 11 boards. When he came back last year, he didn't have that usual energy. It's back. Once again, I don't expect us to get outrebounded very often.
6.) Turnovers - While we turned it over quite a bit in the scrimmage, we still had a positive assist ratio. I know it was D2 but it's also just early November. I was most encouraged to see how well Khalil Richard handled the point. I figured he'd take good care of the ball but he seemed more comfortable at the point than I expected. Even Shivers had 3 assists and 0 turnovers. Smithen didn't even play and he's another good ball handler for the rotation. With Wright back and quicker and better ball handling guards, I think Siena will have a positive assist ratio again. Bisping is a 1st teamer, he's not going to play that bad all the time. His worst month is always November. And Clareth had a positive assist ratio after November frosh jitters last year. I'd say that Siena averages about 15 assists vs about 13 turnovers.
I still see Siena as the team with the highest, most well rounded potential this year. D2 or not, Siena scored 92 points and held a team to 65 pts on 38% shooting in a game without 2 of our top 10 players and where Bisping and LL weren't double digit scorers. Siena got 32 pts from players not in our reputed top 5. To everyone around the league our bench is supposed to be the #1 question mark.
Our top 5 scored 69 points per game last year. These bench guys are only supposed to give us like 9 pts per game. If anything, this game showed that we have some offensive threats that the rest of the league has yet to acknowledge.

I mostly agree with KK's sentiments above. Although any results against a division 2 team should be taken with the a grain of salt, I do feel there were some takeaways from this game.
The way I see it, this team is coming into this season with 3 question marks:
1. Will the bench contribute? 2. Will 3 point shooting be an issue? 3. Will turnovers continue to be an issue?
The exhibition provided encouragement that there are good answers to the first two questions. The third question, not so much. It would appear that we'll have productive forwards behind the starters - and we haven't even seen Friday yet. Fisher pretty much single-handedly helped answer question 2. Shivers and Richard appear to be a huge upgrade in guard depth over what Siena has had. Is it enough against the bench guards of Monmouth and Iona remains to be seen. But as KK notes, we got over 30 points out of expected bench players. I'll take that any night I can get it.
As to question #3, turnovers appear to continue to be an issue. I'm hoping that's early season mechanic that can be straightened out. This team has a deep roster of talented ball handlers now - there's no excuse for all these unforced turnovers. The pace of play certainly isn't one. Both Monmouth and Iona play fast too and take care of the ball better. So here's hoping they clean that up. If they do, this team is easily a co-favorite for a title.

I agree TOs could improve, but I'm less concerned over them if we find ways to win in spite of them. Win the MAAC championship and an NCAA game and they can commit all the TOs they want, IMO.

I think we proved last year that we can win most nights in spite of the turnovers. But vs. Monmouth, a team who thrives by winning the turnover margin battle and converting steals into transition offense, we either don't turn it over ...or we prepare for a 3rd CBI.

This game answered very little. It was over in 5 minutes .... I think it was approx 20-2. If we kept our foot on the gas we would have scored 130. From there on out it got very very sloppy. Of the D2 teams we played the last 3 yrs this was a drop off.
I'll wait to we play similar comp, I really couldn't tell much facing this team, I need to see more to detrrmine if we've corrected last years deficiencies.

Agree with most of KK’s analysis with exception of rotation- Friday, I like him and think he will be a good player for us eventually. Jimmy usually plays about 8 or 9 guys - Jo-Brett- Long- Nico- Quis – Khalil- Kadeem- Fisher and 9th man will be WB . Barring injuries Friday won’t play much this year
A bit concerned about 20 Turnovers vs a D2 team- many unforced turnovers ( same problem as last year ) Not going to worry about it too much since its beginning of November. We can beat a lot of MAAC teams with 20 turnovers or more. But against better teams it’s a killer. I’m convinced Siena will win the MAAC if we get turnovers under control, if not we will probably be headed to C level tournament

Like I said I think the real game ended after the first 5-10 minutes.

Khalil played well against the competition and I think he will do just fine this year, that kid is a baller. Played with intensity on D and made an effort to rebound also. WB getting 4 min garbage time was the most disappointing thing of the night for me. What am I missing here? Kid looks to have all the tools and lets be honest Evan's D cant be any better lol...
Anyone know if Kadeem started practicing yet?

I think he should be in before EF, from what I know about both (granted I haven't seen WB in a year, but I would expect a good bump which would confirm this evaluation). Yes - EF . can hit a three, that's a good weapon occasionally if he can continue to do so and against D1 defenders. But he still has to play D. I expect tons of fouls from him.

This team needs to score points to be successful. I'd like to see more EF especially if he can knock down the three. What I'm taking from the exhibition is Siena only made 4 three's from guys not named Fisher.
