I think the incentive to transfer mid-year is lower since the NCAA changed the rules so that the one semester of playing at the first college counts as a full year of eligibility.

Me too! I didn't attack him. He attacked me, so yeah I responded. Sorry if I'm not excited about a D-3 player, that walked on at Syracuse, is taking up our last scholarship on a team severely lacking talent. I really hope no great players inquire about transferring at Christmas, and we have no scholarships. I'm not blaming JC for this class. He got the job late. Everyone understands he gets a pass this year. I think it's completely fair to value the opportunity of taking a mid-season transfer over the value of taking the perceived risk of a grad transfer with little actual D1 in-game experience. With that said, I'd disagree. I personally think the value of bringing in Siena's first ever grad transfer, which announces to the college hoops world that this now possible at the advertising cost of one scholarship year, outweighs leaving the spot vacant in the hopes that a mid-season transfer emerges, regardless of the on-court impact Bayer has. The amount of mid-season transfers that are available most years is not that robust of a list anyways (a list I uncovered from 2016 had about 50 total mid-season transfer names, many of whom were JUCO, DII, or Joel Wincowski). /quote] I "liked" all of your post........except the reference to Joel Wincowski. C'mon. No reason for that.

It's funny how people have different opinions of players. There was not much to gauge Brett on in his 1st year because Mitch hardly ever played him but what I do remember is he hustled like heck, always diving for loose balls on the floor and our group of 4 always commented during the season about why he never had any run.Mitch was a terrible Head Coach,to say the least.GO SAINTS!! He was really slow, couldn't jump or shoot. He worked his ass off and got a lot better at his entire game. Thats why I became a big fan of his 8 months later. I admire his work ethic because he never had a lot of natural ability. After 5 years, its easy to say now what a class act he was at Siena. He's everything a school hopes for out of a recruit. I wish more kids on this roster watched and learned from his efforts.

HJ, You validated my comments how you try to twist things to make yourself look right by claiming I said I made Bayer a star. I never said any such thing. I said give him a chance. Thus you attacked me first. You have the most appropriate handle on this board. HOOP SPOUTING JUNK!

C’mon Mr Siena- HJ is entitled to his opinion. It is certainly a valid point. However I’m of the believe having a solid kid on roster now is better than some potential transfer that may or may not happen, even if it did the transfer wouldn’t be eligible until almost 2020- Bayer is low risk, since he only ties up a scholarship for a year- helping Siena bridge the gap between Jimmy’s decimated roster and the arrival of the 4 man 2019 class.
I will add- I too thought Brett was a D2 player his first year- he really worked his tail off to improve- he never was that physically talented and got the most of his talent. So let's not pretend he was some kind of budding star his freshman season - he played 14 min a game and avg 3 points and 2 boards, shot 37% from floor, was often out of position defensively and had players blowing by him. It's a testament to Brett he improved as much as he did

Kid looks like a pretty excellent walk-on. Played legit competition in HS, bouncy, 6-5, and can shoot it a little bit. Maybe he gets a crack at minutes if he puts some weight on.

If he played at CBA in NJ, you also know he's very well coached! Great program.

Our recent Walk on. Has quite a pedigree. Grand dad is in the Wagner college basketball Hall of Fame.his dad is also a prolific scorer in the mid 80’s This 3rd Bob Mahala was encouraged by a strong Siena alum who learned this high level scholar was also interested in continuing his hoop life. We may have gotten a gem.
