Iona scored 118 vs. Niagara with no overtimes. We did well to do what we did.
As was discussed the other day with Guy on the MAAC board, Iona was just a bad matchup for Siena. The offense has to improve enough to make our defense matter vs. Iona. But they were one of the few teams last year that our defense couldn't stop.
That's why I still predict winning even one game vs them could be a challenge. We need their newbies to flop and we need to score..plain and simple.
SPU and Iona are the toughest matchups for us.
Quinny's style helps us a little. Rider has no toughness. Manhattan I think we match up well with and Monmouth sucks on offense but could steal one with their defense.

Niagara themselves scored 92 in that game and is even worse than Iona defensively. So it wasn't exactly a defensive clinic. Iona put up more then their season average against us both times, and it's unacceptable. Both Cleveland State and Manhattan held them under 70. St. Bona (a team we beat) crushed them by playing Iona's game - only better. Dayton, Nevada, and Northern Iowa lit them up too. The way to beat Iona is to capitalize on their defensive issues and stop their main source of offense - the 3 pointer. Patsos couldn't attack because the offense sputtered. The first game, only two starters scored in double figures - one scored 0. 5'8 Evan Hymes had to come of the bench to bail them out. The second game, only one starter showed up - the bench puts up most of the team's points, again led by Hymes. The team that showed up to blow away Fresno St. 81-68 would do just fine against Iona - this season's team should be much better than that one.
Siena's scoring sucked mainly because their shooting sucked. Get up to a decent 2 and 3 point fg % and all will be right as rain. With Bisping emerging as a consistent scorer, plus some new additions to shore up the shooting and scoring, we should be good to go. I predict we split with them. Their lack of quality depth is going to be a season long issue for them. Also, I suspect that Dublin and Amayo as replacements for Bowman and Armand in the starting lineup isn't exactly going to be a wash. Lastly, they have little down low after Laury unless Hines makes a big jump - and even then that's still not a lot of inside depth. So though plenty remains, they have their issues too. 28 made threes against us in 2 games is absurd - if those field goals are twos instead, the outcome is much different. Take the three pointer away and you stop the Gaels. We've got a small army of big wings to hopefully help out with that now, and they've lost two 40% or better 3 point shooters with no obvious replacements.
I don't know enough about SPU to comment on them. No one in the MAAC really strikes me as an insurmountable challenge at this point, but I do see Iona, Manhattan, Quinny, and SPU all as teams capable of putting a hurt on Siena and finishing ahead of us if our players falter. The rest we should be able to sweep even with an off night. This should be the first season we sweep the Buffalo trip in quite a while.

Throw last year out-- Iona lost a ton, their best player Armand.. 3 of the 6 players that played, 37 ppg,13 boards, 170 made 3 pointers ( half the team total) Iona has some potential, but make no mistake about it losing those 3 and replacing them with Sledge-- a 6'4.5 power forward who played 19 min a game in Big South and a banged up Amayo-- who hasn't done anything at collegiate level this years Iona's team will not be like last years team- Gals have nowhere near the offensive firepower they had last year.. English is good.. ( he is a gunner) Laury is good ( a bit lazy) Williams has some potential-- but sorry a full time player that only shoot 20 free throw for entire season-- gals are going to miss Armand Bowman and Poole-- like I said Gals will be good, but they have a ton of question marks If Siena can score the ball this year-- I like our chances, if we score 68ppg and shoot same pct as last year .. then we will struggle to finish top 3.. we can talk( and sometimes disagree) about what players will be in rotation who will start etc..but I think we all pretty much agree Siena needs to shoot better pct and score more this year

Iona had two guys light us up from 3 in the first game then 2 different guys in the 2nd game. That was the difference. Agreed our offense must improve and I believe it will. Iona was the only team that appeared to be unbeatable to us....different story this season.

Williams, Laury, and English are their big guns - after that it's a steep drop-off unless Amayo and Dublin come out of nowhere and become something they haven't been before. I say run these guys raged in man to man coverage with constant pressure all game and wear them down. They can't afford to have those three on the bench for long.

I doubt we'll sweep the "bottom 6" teams... expect a 10-2 or 9-3 record. If Siena can go 5-3 against the other 4 teams we would finish at 15-5 or 14-6 and I think we'd all sign for that. I expect Siena to really be good at home. How well we ultimately do is how well we play on the road. With a weak OOC home schedule I am expecting to be 13-1 or at worse 12-2 at the TUC in the regular season. And 14-0 isn't off the table if we are able to shoot and score the ball better. SPU doesn't score but Iona, Manhattan and Quinnipiac do. To beat them consistently we need to score points along with playing solid defense. But all three of those programs also graduated key pieces while Siena returns everyone.

SPU beat us last year and they had zero guard depth. I mean it was horrible. Dunne never has an offense and still seems to steal a game. These 2 shooters he's bringing in did really well in JUCO. This kind of shooting depth is something he's never had before. Wyche, Washington, Dominique, Welton and these shooting guards...they are dangerous vs us with the way Dunne coaches D.

Hester shot 39% and Dennis 44% from three at Juco. There is offensive potential there. Dominique is a go to big. They have the physicality and potential all around game to hurt us.

We shot horrible vs SPC last year scoring 53 points at their place—Dunn owned the PW—don’t expect that to continue Vs Jimmy.. Siena was 4-9 in regular season in games they scored less than 66 points--- I hope to see number of games we score less than 66 points cut down to less than a handful —for instance Iona scored less than 66 points only once all of last season.. Quinny only once and Manhattan twice.. can’t emphasize this enough – no matter how good the defense is—we have to score more next year and of course shoot better pct. Without that you are very vulnerable to “upsets” by weak teams who usually struggle to score

The fact that the ref showed up late & Jimmy letting him know he wasn't pleased didn't help the way he called the game "against" us either. Not.

Apart from the ability to hit shots (muscle memory), there is also the very important component - confidence. I think last year's stats got negatively skewed early due to the coaching change, the many new faces and the youth of our team. The continued yo-yoing of players in the starting lineup and then the game itself did not help the confidence building process. There were numerous examples early on where players hesitated or declined the opportunity to shoot - shots that we all knew they should/could execute. Those hesitations lengthened the offensive possession and, more often than not, resulted in late, forced, bad shots. As the season roled on (pun intended) the kids got more comfortable within themselves and with their teammates and, most importantly, started to get where Jimmy was coming from with his unorthodox constant in-your-face style. I'd like to believe those early season issues will not be there this year and the returning players will quickly bring the new guys to similar comfort levels and we start winning early. Winning cures a lot of ills and builds strength and we ended last year on a very big high coupled with the realization that this staff gets it done. I think the CBI win was a bigger lift than a probable first play-in-round win or loss/first round loss in the NCAA tourney would have been.

Didn't we bring in some shooters too in Brandwijk and Paige? I'm just telling you, SPU has potential to hurt us. Dunne mucks up games and keeps them close. Hester shot 39% and Dennis 44% from three at Juco. There is offensive potential there. Dominique is a go to big. They have the physicality and potential all around game to hurt us. Dominique is impressive, but he's not intimidating. It's not often SPU gets an A-10 transfer. But he has to mostly operate alone because SPU has nothing else inside except Quadir Welton, both of them about 6'7, 215. Their physicality is not a concern vs. ours. Two teams held Dominique to single digits in scoring and rebounding in a game last season - and one of them was Siena. We can send waves of bigger guys at him all game. If the two new JUCOs are the shooters they are touted to be, then Siena has to defend the perimeter better. We have the big wings to do a better job of that now. Small and fast teams like Iona can be dangerous, but small and slow ones like SPU don't concern me as much. Siena was its own worst enemy last season, shooting the way they did against them. Siena went cold and allowed a 10-0 run late in the game at SPU. Ryan Oliver was the only one who showed up with 15 points in 16 minutes. Poole took the night off and was scoreless in 32 minutes. That short of thing won't happen this season. If shots aren't falling, time for a substitution. I'm really hoping Brandwijk and Paige can shore up the shooting woes.

Dont worry the fg percentage will improve. Everyone will shoot better. Not expecting the new guys to hurt us there but not sure how much they will help.
