You really can't "astroturf" this stuff. It's gotta grow organically.
We can complain or we can do something.

Doesn't it start with the students who are there? I sit in 109, I'll chant with anyone.

This has been discussed before, but the students are so far back. There should be more involvement (agree that JP should go to the dorms), but it's hard to get something going when they sit so far back in the corners and it raises way back to almost the second level. How far is even the first row of those corners from the court? (And that first row holds what - 4 seats?)

Even when the students, cheerleaders and band are present there is too much time spent on sponsor commercials to allow for the creation of a college basketball atmosphere. I often feel that admission should be free if all these sponsors are meriting all the time that the band and cheer/dance teams could and should have. Why can't the sponsors be satisfied with program ads, signs ,etc. Oh, the band is sometimes given 30 seconds when the T V commercials run long. I feel sorry for the students who give up their time to practice music and dance routines. At many big programs these kids are on scholarship. At the off campus arena at North Carolina State the band comes out and plays at the four corners of the court. This topic comes up annually to no avail. By the way on Elvis' birthday I will be 70.

Congrats on the B-day. On the issue advertising I think you are way off. Are you suggesting that these sponsors give more and get less? This seems to be the attitude of our society nowadays. Businesses and corporations are expected to give more and more and are appreciated less and less. I for one appreciate the sponsors and we are lucky to have them. I am sure they don't get that much for thier advertising dollars by comparison to other advertising mediums and are essentially doing this to support the team. So you are asking, in essence, that they give more? It is easy to volunteer and spend other people's work and money. Why don't you open up your wallet and if you do already - open it up a little more. Do you see how rude that is to suggest that? Siena does not have the resources or the clout of the "big" programs. Be grateful we have sponsors that are willing to give to the Siena basketball program.

This is a quick one that we can implement, but it involves the people on this board being the jerks who insist that their sectionmates join in. How serious are we about it? Don't the geezers do that to start the second half already. I wouldn't want to rain on that parade OK, so I won't try to do this if nobody else will.

The fan and media support has been great. We have a home court advantage. The numbers alone are inspiring so those who have shown up continue to do so and wins will bring more. I agree the crowd is reactionary yet I am ok with the play on the court bringing the crowd to their feet and giving them something to cheer about. Having 6000+ fans attend a game during break is not a MAAC norm I would guess and is directly linked to the excitement surrounding the program. ..

Agreed --- and as long as the team attacks the rim and goes on spurts the crowd will come alive. One thing that has already improved is patsos knows to not take timeouts after made siena baskets. Mitch was the king of that, always frustrating.

Cellar Rat I won't argue with you sponsors are important. However, I don't think fans should be hit over the head with commercials to the detriment of creating an enjoyable college basketball atmosphere. I have this year supporting our Saints in Montreal and Orlando opened my wallet and dispensed a sizeable part of my " fortune" such as it is.

The "DEAD" chant was gaining traction. It lost relevance during the PW's tenure.
The problem is psychology...
In the ARC it is easier to reach critical mass. It is much tighter and if a bunch of students stand up or do the newspaper thing the non-participants feel obligated to join in and do. In the TUC 50 people - even if in 1 section - is still a significant minority. Nobody wants to "stand out" so people generally hang back. The DEAD chant, over time, got enough people into it that it IMO reached critical mass and was effective. The newspaper thing during intros would be good if the students could lead and then maybe have the TU contributed enough copy for a complete section during each game. Have a few students let people know what's up the first couple times.

Be grateful we have sponsors that are willing to give to the Siena basketball program. I agree with hankla, the number of announced advertisements are way too much. In fact I believe that most spectators don’t even listen to the announcements. Just my opinion. Siena needs one big sponsor. But in this location, that’s hard to fine. I assume its Trustco Bank…..most sponsors not only give donations to the school, they have some type of give always to get the fans involved. What does Trustco give the fan? So I guess sponsors fall into two categories; a school sponsor(donates money only) and a fan sponsor so to speak(donates money to the school and a give a way to the fan). They both want to be associated with Siena and each donates by different means. SEFCU is a sponsor of UAlbany basketball, is it their major sponsor, I don’t know. But I do know that SEFCU gives away up to $2,000 in cash every home game. Up to $1,000 for the fan and a matching amount to different nonprofit organizations. Now that’s a “fan” sponsor. Yankee Trails in the eyes of a fan is a bigger sponsor than Trustco. Maybe Yankee Trails is our major sponsor. Fans have a chance to win a great price at every game. I remember Yankee Trails because of their give a way. I had to look up Trustco in the Siena Magazine. I assume Trustco donates a larger sum to Siena than Yankee Trails or maybe they don’t. If the sponsor wants the fans to remember them after the game, a give a ways is one way to go. Wasn’t it nice to see a local cheerleading team at the last home game? To take the place of our cheerleaders. That brought additional people to the game. (mothers, fathers, grandfather, grandmothers, etc) They didn’t once go on the court to cheer…..that is totally wrong. But the sponsor’s announcements played on and on. Reduce the announcements and flash their logo on the ribbon and TV screens and then we can encourage the cheerleaders, dancers and band to get the fans involved. I’m sure we all appreciate the sponsor’s commitment to the program. We just don’t want to hear a two hour info commercial

Glen, The popularity of the "dead chant" I am afraid is relegated to the "soon to be blue crew"... Animal House has little relevance with the younger fans. I suspect it actually did little for the team since moving to the TUC which was always in the locker room when it was "performed", and isn't the idea of the atomosphere to inspire the team?
It took forever to get the band in synch with the team coming out onto the court to the strains of "When The Saints Come Marching In". Maybe time to advance that. Borrowing from Penn State Football, where one half yells "We Are"... answered by the other side with "Penn State", awesome to witness by the way. Here is a thought.. and this could be worked a lot of ways....
A "Bugler Sam" (to steal from Saratoga Race Course, could be done many ways).. gives a "call to the post" 2 minutes before the team is to come onto the court. The Cheer team is deployed along each sideline to lead the effort... after an intro "riff", from the band, the the North(or South, who cares which side starts) sideline fans along with the band, sing, yell, chant, "Oh when the Saints (loudly)..." alternated to the opposing sideline singing, yelling, chanting "come marching in".... reverse to 1st side... "Oh when the Saints"... (reverse) .. "Come Marching In"...next refrain... (ALL) "How I want to be in that number".... Now the Dogpound ... "ONE" .... (All) When the Saints come marching in. Now all who participated feel part of the game from the outset... Repeat at Halftime (especially at halftime). A little "hokey"? .. sure... but who has something better? (and the cheer team actually gets to lead the crowd in cheering for the team).

(and the cheer team actually gets to lead the crowd in cheering for the team). Dead cheer had MAX effect as it was done right after player introductions and just before tip off...................in fact, the PA announcer would look to us to sort of "signal" it was our time to perform............both teams were in their huddles, and as mentioned before, the opponent was pretty much dumb founded and gazed in amazement as this cheer unfolded rather than paying attention to the last minute instructions of their coach (plenty of them turned the heads on the bench and rubbernecked during that event)..................when the win total got big, we passed out "team" posters around nearby sections, it was orchestrated with excellent timing and that without so much as pre-game practicing, and it took quite a while for the cheer to be completed and essentially the game was delayed for a brief moment.......it at the very least put the other team on notice that the building was alive and that they weren't coming in there thinking it was gonna be a game they were gonna win, the all important 6th man (crowd) was in IT from the very start..............would love to see us again make the TUC a place that has more energy from the get go rather than wait for something to happen during the game to get everyone participating!!!!!!!!!!
