After a solid sophomore campaign for McDonogh’s varsity boys basketball team, Evan Fisher has moved on to a new challenge this spring: playing up a level for Nike Baltimore Elite’s 17-and-under AAU team.
Fisher, a sophomore starter for the Eagles, is faring well so far for NBE.
“It’s great. The atmosphere is unbelievable,” Fisher said after a recent Nike Baltimore Elite practice at Baltimore City Community College. “I’m playing up with the 17-year-olds, and it really shows you what you got to do to get to the next level as a player.”
A 6-foot-8, 225-pound power forward, Fisher has claimed a rotation role for Nike Elite. While there are inevitable growing pains for someone a year younger than most of his opponents, Fisher has had his fair share of positive moments. He averaged 4.8 points and 6.2 rebounds for NBE during Nike’s Elite Youth Basketball League session in Minneapolis last month.
Colleges have started to notice Fisher’s potential. He already holds offers from UMBC and George Mason, and expects more to roll in. Princeton, Maryland, Boston College and Georgetown have all contacted him as well.
Fisher, who said he has no timetable when it comes to recruiting, has “no real dream college.” He’s looking for a place “where I could find myself happy for four years and get a degree.”
Fisher hopes to continue to grow into his size 16 feet, but no matter if he stays at 6-8 or shoots up another few inches, he has a good idea of where he will play at the next level.
“I want to be a 4, and [be] as versatile as I can,” said Fisher, who hopes to continue developing his inside-out game. “The most effective players are the most versatile.”
