I’m not sure the snowflakes and coddllers could handle a coach like Deane in today’s world. I’d love a coach like Deane again. I would love to see him try! Deane was tough.........but you knew where you stood with him and his expectations as a player...................typically if a player made a bad pass/decision or attempted a bad shot, that player was quickly yanked, but within minutes Deane would insert that same player back in the game...............and also there would be 1 player on the roster that used to get the brunt of Deane's ire during a season, in many ways it was the tough love he was showing from a coaching standpoint, and it paid off dividends as it turned Bruce Schroeder as a G into one of the best PF's in the league at a height of only 6"3" earning all maac honors............... and if you ask Deane, after the 1994 NIT season he went to the Admins to ask for a raise and also more money for his assistants, and it was refused ..........we know the rest of the story as he left for the job at Marquette where he did a very good job (he was 100-55 in 5 seasons), his first 4 seasons he won 20+ games with 2 NIT's (losing a final to Va Tech 65-64) and also 2 NCAA's............he went 14-15 in yr 5, and was fired by the AD when their relationship turned sour plus high expectations from the fan base........he landed at Lamar (where his first yr his team pulled a miracle and upset the top seed to earn a NCAA bid) and then finished out his HC career at Wagner before being an Asst at James Madison under former Siena player Matt Brady...............Deane would also tell you he never wanted to leave Siena, he was very fond of the area and his wife was local as well, you never know how that would have turned out, could have been another Bob McKillop/Davidson type career for us instead............

Green and gold colored glasses, ahhhhhh.....
Without Doremus, that '94 team goes nowhere. The rest of that team was decent but not outstanding on their own. People are complaining about today's roster with the foreign players. Do you recall Attewell, Balser, Gadot? Stu and Geoff were good players but undersized. Matt Gras was decent but mostly because he had Doremus to feed him. Deane did not leave a full cupboard and Beyer was ready for the gig. Had Deane stuck around it would have been a .500 season at best.

Agreed GG4E. I did like Deane but he never got us to the MAAC finals. Just sayin'. How long would that fly now? Well, I guess 4+ years.

Sunday night was always a big hump that Deane didn't get over, but in retrospect I truly believe he would have had he stayed........and let's be honest, those days of the MAAC were loaded with talented teams & players (unlike the more recent versions of the league- top to bottom it was really really good back then), remember LaSalle & Lionel Simmons, and terrific Manhattan & Iona teams that stood in the way........it wasn't from a lack of poor coaching or talent, just came up short, IMHO..................

GG4E - I would argue those Siena teams were well coached but we were short on athleticism. Those Iona and MC teams beat us because they had guys like Gio in the paint and we didn't. Now, Mike made the most of his teams and they always did pretty well but it wasn't all roses. Jamal Marshall at Manhattan comes to mind. I remember Siena playing at the Knick vs Manhattan...down big in the 2nd half when Jarming White went off. That little guy put the team on his back. Too bad he didn't make it at Siena. Mike brought in several big time PGs but he never got the same caliber (or even close) bigs. He's still a Siena legend though.

Unless he pulled another HOF PG out of his ass, no way that team wins 10 games without a star like Bennerman running the team. He ran to Milwaukee right in time.

I didnt vote, but Beyer's 2nd years Siena team (5-22, 1-13) was the worst team Ive ever seen....up until this year. Records are pretty similar, but the MAAC was MUCH stronger 30 years ago than it is now. People need to remember LaSalle was in the MAAC until the '91 season I believe. They were unreal. Manhattan and Niagara were also powers back then.

HJ I can’t remember the kids name but he had a really talented PG from NJ he was after ….. it was thought at that time the string at that position would have continued another 4 yrs…

Beyer squeezed out 8 wins in his 1st year with Gras, Downing and Bid as seniors, but the wheels fell off his 2nd year when he thought Jim Secretarski could be the next Brown/Bennerman. THAT was the worst Siena team Ive ever seen. Until this one.

If I recall correctly Mike got $300K from Marquette. Huge money then. No way Siena could have kept him. Same with the 1.2ml Fran got from Iowa.

Secretarski was named POY in Wisconsin as a HS senior...........I think he did hit 9 trifecta's in a game at the ARC one time........but it doesn't compare to watching Gary Bossert of Niagara torching Siena at the ARC for hitting 12 of 14 3pters, more remarkable was that he started 1 for 3 but then hit his last 11 consecutively which is still an NCAA record..................
