The way I understood it colleges were profiting on the NIL of players who in turn had no way to be compensated for their services other than the scholarship (whether full or partial). So I agree once the ncaa capitulated, how can you now put a cap on it and regulate it? Free market let it roll... it's up to us to put a stop to it. We won't though... or will we? Put a cap on it by NCAA limiting each player to no more than $2k per year. That way no college has an advantage and each player can achieve the NCAA “pocket money” they envisioned. “ What was envisioned as a way for college athletes to make some pocket money based on their celebrity has turned into bidding wars for top recruits and transfers who can command millions for their services.”

NIL exists because of a Supreme Court case from last summer (oh and it was a 9-0 decision so you can’t blame Trumps judges for this one!). They basically said it was an anti-trust violation to limit an athlete’s ability to make money on his NIL. Any thought that the NCAA can now put a limit on the amount they can earn, or that NIL is going away is pure folly. Athletes do have to report their deals to the schools and the schools have to monitor that the deals are in compliance with NCAA rules regarding them, but the schools are not supposed to get in the middle of negotiating them or disbursing the money. NIL is here to stay. www.si.com/.amp/nfl/2021/06/29/business-of-football-supreme-court-unanimous-rulingWell, now we’re stuck with the mess we’re in. Pay for play it is.

I can't read behind that paywall now, but I doubt the NCAA really knew what their intent was. Think they had to do something quick as a result of a court decision. Now the genie's probably out of the bottle and think this latest conference scramble is somewhat related. I don’t know if this will work for you but clear your web browser history/cache. I got to the article from Google and not any paid or logon TU site. I have to clear my Safari history after three Gazette articles. 🙂 Thanks - I have to give that more time. I think I have SOME cookies that I need/want (passwords for some things) so I need to see if I can delete selectively.

Only way anything changes is if college basketball popularity waned, which as I said, it won't.

Syracuse businessman and booster just gave 13 SU athletes $1m in NIL deals. JG3 was one of six men's basketball players to get an agreement.

Good for Syracuse but is that honestly what you want the future of college basketball to be? Not just basketball players. Football players and a women's basketball player. It will definitely help recruiting.

Coaches have been making millions for years, time to spread the wealth to the ones producing on the field or court.

OK, but what about the kids working just as hard that are coming away with nothing while watching their teammates get $1 million? Wouldn't it be more equitable to make sure everyone gets a piece of the pie with top guys earning more?

We need something to change the everybody gets a trophy mentality. Hopefully the guys making the money share the wealth with their teammates, it could build team chemistry. Also overpaid coaches could throw some money to the players from deals with shoe and apparel companies.
