Add a defensive presence in the paint and I feel comfortable going into next season. Siena should have the ability to use the summer sessions to gel as a team and bring the freshmen along as quickly as possible and assess and address the PG role until McCollum gets up to speed. Maybe he is already there like Pickett was. That would be a bonus. The fact that Carm doesn't see an urgent need says something.

This roster is what attack and finish looks like - a deep assortment of long athletic guards at the 1-4 surrounding a single big man at the 5. Free throw shooting - an Achilles heal last season - looks to be significantly improved as well. That's huge. You're looking for that singular PG who brings up the ball into half court sets, but that's not how they'll be playing. Any one of 4 guys will be doing bringing the ball up in rapid transition on makes and misses. We'll be seeing a lot less half court pick and roll. That was Pickett's game - not Carm's intended offensive style. Did we one-for-one replace the talented players that were lost? No. But now instead of relying on 2 or 3 guys to carry the load any given game with everyone else not producing much - they've for 9 or 10 guys capable of giving them 8-10 ppg every night. This team is now deeper, longer, tougher, and should actually hit its free throws. The lack of apparent superstars is made up for with a whole that's greater than the sum of its parts. Attack and finish is code for we have no 3 point shooters and the offense will struggle to score in the 60s. Like I said TBD. I for one think the offense is hard to watch and getting to the line and coming up empty is even more frustrating to watch. FT shooting isn't on the coach, let's hope these guys can cash in at the line. Attack and finish is code for prioritizing high percentage shots at the rim or getting fouled and hitting your free throws. It doesn't mean no 3 point shooters - it means don't rely on the 3 for offense. They will have 3 solid career perimeter players in McCollum, Hopkins, and Owens. Rogers is a volume scorer who hit the 3 at about the same percentage as King - average, if not elite. The offense last season was mostly bogged down by fatigue due to a season-long depth issue, coupled with a group that deferred to 2 or 3 stars to carry the team running the half court pick and roll while everyone else waited for something to happen. You won't see that this time around. You're going to see a lot of motion and ball movement by a roster that won't get fatigued doing so because it's deep enough to replenish itself. They'll play faster, have more guys that can create their own shot, and have more guys who can contribute overall. And when they get fouled, this new group is by the numbers more likely to actually hit their free throws. Collectively, all these things is where greater offense will come from.

Please share some insights from this special access you had.

College basketball's new landscape is certainly different and it is going difficult for a while to make the transition. Like everything else, people will adapt. I must say that now that our roster is almost complete and we have so many new faces that I can't wait to see the team. And there will be a lot to talk about, that's for sure! Let's try to be positive and put some faith in our coaching staff. Speaking of which, I can't wait to see who the new assistant coach is going to be.

Hopkins (Belmont) Rogers (Cal Poly) Johnson (Middle Tennessee) Gaines (Northwestern) Kellier (Utah) Baer (Iowa) Stormo (Pepperdine)
Over half of Siena’s scholarship players will be transfers next season... likely for the first time ever.

I didn’t leave him off by accident. And none are from schools in the East which is odd. Closest is TN and IL. Things really do change

It seems to me that, for the most part, Carm is building a roster with players that are "jacks of all trades". Traditionally I am used to a roster where you have complementary specialists - a player who is a good ballhandler, but not a good rebounder, alongside a great shooter but not a slasher, etc etc. Carm is choosing players who can do a little of everything but don't EXCEL in one thing. Will be interested to see how it plays out.
