Hearing through the insider grapevine that Mitch is sticking around for his fourth year so they won't have to buy out his contract... Just a rumor, but brace yourselves just in case?

Nice try Mr troll( or is it Mrs Bunogaro) at any rate.. this of course is wishful thinking of the part of a person very jealous of Siena program Mitch's days at Siena are justifiably numbered

Yep. I can't even imagine that they would do that. Any idiot can look at the mostly empty (worst I've ever seen...including Lanier and Beyer) stands and know that this is it. If the admins bring him back they'll get an earful when they next trot out that strategic plan BS.

Actually grascandunk didn't say he'd be sticking around as the head coach - could the smoke mean they are thinking of reassigning him for the last year of his contract? Just something to think about....

Just something to think about.... They almost never happens. Mitch's contract is likely as the "head men's basketball coach of Siena College" so I don't believe they could "reassign" him. Anyway even if you could you don't do that..when you fire someone they are gone entirely. As far as "grascandunk" goes I'd like to know what he or she is smoking?

MTS, do you ever attempt to research anything you post? Coaches get reassigned quite often to avoid paying buyouts and get something for the money.

Didn't Albany put Trina Patterson in another position for a year?

A lot of schools reassign coaches, in all sports. A quick google search will show you that. That being said, we all know Mitch won't be coaching Siena's mens team next year.

I don't want to be one of those fair-weather fans who threatens to cancel his season tickets on the internet because of some decision that the school made that I maybe disagree with--a real fan sticks through good times and bad, says the guy whose other favorite sports teams include the woeful Bills, Sabres, and Mets--but the decision that needs to be made at the end of this season is the kind of decision that defines what kind of program Siena is and what kind of men's college basketball team this school wants to have.
There are some very fine and reputable academic institutions, such as Marist or Canisius, who don't buy out their coaches. They let the contracts run out and then they try again to get the right hire. And they occasionally have great success. But when they've got a bad coach, it takes them all the years of the contract before they can move on. They also keep their teams in their on-campus gyms and they charge much less for tickets than Siena does.
And then there are the kinds of programs who do buy out their coaches because they are trying to win more games than they lose. While academics and the well-being of the student-athletes are the top priorities, competing for postseason berths every season is absolutely the next highest priority.
That's the kind of program that Siena has been, and that's why we have the fanbase that we do have. If this community is going to continue as it has, then the decision is obvious. In the Division I era, no Siena coach has ever had a losing record three seasons in a row and been given the opportunity to try for a fourth time.
And if Siena makes the other decision, then a lot of fans--myself included--will be forced to wonder if the program has turned the corner and changed its priorities.
A lot of people who I trust are confident that Siena will do what it has to do when the MAAC Tournament is concluded. But if the administration has to stay tight-lipped from now until that time, and if the official company line is that everything stays the same until a decision is made otherwise--I can be comfortable with that. We'll have time to see where the program is headed before we have to renew our season tickets. We'll find out in due time.

As a fan I look at it from a fan's perspective but look at what's going on now on the sidelines- Mitch yelling at players. Players are yellling back. This situation isn't fair to the kids in the program. Fans aside, the players are the ones suffering.

Actually, I guess you would call me a "fair weather" fan, Ed, but I disagree with your assessment. It sounds good to say the student athlete comes first, but if that was the case, you could just have club teams and be happy. When you have D1 programs, winning comes first. Siena has a lot of fans who are not alumni. They won't, and shouldn't, support losing.

I have never been a fair weather fan,(over 35 years), but I will not be sitting there next year if they don't can Mitch. This year has been unbearable, worse than anything we have ever dealt with. Losing is one thing, but the way we have lost with all the bullshit from Mitch has been beyond painful!

The point of my post was to say that Siena needs to start winning again, and they need a new coach to do it. Winning doesn't come first. It's a school first. But winning needs to come next, and needs to be a very high priority.
