Let's see people's opinions. Note this is NOT where you WANT Siena to be but opinion where they WILL be within the next 5 years give or take.

Doesn't matter what our opinion is, what does the Siena administration think/what?

Did D’Argenio actually go to DC last week?

He was in DC at alumni event ... Revealed plans of a first class training facility for Siena's athletic teams and putting hardback seats in ARC ... Can't say he visited Georgetown while he was here

My guess is that Siena gets invited to a rebuilding A-10 that still includes VCU but doesn't include any of its Midwestern members. Not a bad league for travel, and likely still a multi-bid conference most years.
Field hockey would be able to give up its NEC affiliation for the A-10. Women's water polo and men's lacrosse would need to reapply to the MAAC for affiliate membership.

Please note that if I was a bettor I'd say A10 but as a dreamer I want C7. Anything but NEC+. The MAAC will soon have almost as many NEC schools as old-time MAAC members. Heck, even half the MAAC schools are former AE/NAC members (Siena, Canisius, NU). How the league has dropped off...and we're not even competitive with them.

We need to all remember that it wouldn't just be the hoop team moving... you are asking every other D1 sport at the school to now step up as well. The cost associated with such moves can not be overlooked. Increase in coaching salaries across the board, increase travel budgets, tutor budgets(for longer trips) daily meal stipends, recruiting costs.... i mean for ONE team it isn't too bad, but you add that across all teams/players, it adds up quick....

I suspect that those numbers are being crunched right now down Turchi Drive. Get your checkbooks out, Siena fans.

Like I said I don't see us in the Catholic-7 league because I just don't think we have the money to compete. The travel wouldn't be terrible though. The eastern division would not be far.. Villanova, Georgetown, Providence, St John's and Seton Hall are all pretty close (DC being the longest trip). The Western division would be pretty far Butler, Dayton, St. Louis, Marquette, DePaul and Xavier to send the women's tennis team and the like. For basketball at least I would guess you'd play a home and home within your division and play everyone once in the other division playing half and home and half away and rotating every year. Realistically ... when the A10 gets raided that would make more sense and Siena could compete well. -Siena -St. Joe's -LaSalle -George Washington -St. Bonaventure -Duquense -Fordham -VCU -Richmond -George Mason -URI -UMass

one article compared what St Johns spends on basketball compared to Siena (as well as total budget). People need to remember that there is indeed a big difference BUT we are comparing a school receiving big east money spending on a big east budget with another receiving MAAC money (LOL) and a MAAC budget. A LOT more money coming from TV deals etc would greatly change the playing field for Siena and may prove differently for schools like St Johns and Georgetown who wouldnt be soaking up big east money any longer.

That's a great point! No one has talked about what will happen to the athletic budgets of these programs now that they are no longer part of a BCS football conference. I'm sure that their revenue will diminish as they will no longer be riding on the backs of the schools that have a football program.

I don't think it was an even split. In fact, I think they are breaking away so that they can get a similar deal to the old espn deal in force.

With additional C7 TV revenue Siena could afford to compete in the C7 after a few years.
Any additional cost is more than offset by the increased advertising profile, alumni donations, higher tuition, higher ticket prices, business sponsors, institutional prestige, etc.
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, which the Siena administrtion should have more actively planned for and pursued.
The anticpated break up of the Big East has been discussed for more than 5 years.
If Siena had big thinkers in the administration they would have been prepared for this opportunity. Instead we have some amateurs running the show, who hired Mitch, a coach fired by FF 20 years ago after 5 straight losing seasons. Mind boggling!!
Siena has an almost captive maarket in the CD, with a 15K capacity, almost first rate arena, great press, and loyal fan base.
If Siena actually spent real money on the replacement for Fran, we may now be favored over Richmond and VCU to join the C 7.
Due to the administtation's blunders, however, we probably will only get an invite to the watered down A-10. The new A-10 is a step up, but in reality only a notch over the MAAC. If you were a high school senior who loved college basketball would ypu want to be a part of the C7 ( going to games against G'town, Villanove et al) or the watrered down A-10 ( St Joseph, St. Bonnie's et al). "Nuff Said"

"Nuff Said" you are talking about a school who had a women's coach stay about 6 years too long and have screwed up the hiring of their bread and butters coach 50% of the time, to expect ANY forward thinking is folly.....
