yes it seems like Quinny has everything going for itself and yet we saw a different picture on the Siena bus trip there this season. Beautiful facilities, great campus and a very poor fan turnout. They have to do a lot better with their fan base to look more attractive than our program. Their hockey team may be a big plus nationally but I think they have a long ways to go getting a broad fan base developed for their MBB team. Does it matter if fans turnout at Quinny if the moola machine is running overtime? Siena needs fannies in the seats to pay the bills. The MAAC should have done a better job with their due diligence before allowing a school to join that could bury the rest of the conference in dead presidents. Maybe the plan was to have Quinny and Monmouth start a "keeping up with the Jonses" spending spree for on campus Basketball facilities. Dropping the figure of 800K for a MAAC hoops coach, is the reality bus unloading in Loudonville or is it a ploy by Quinny to establish the fact the they have the cash to move up in conference and aren't afraid to spend it? Either way 800k is a nice salary. "Nice?" It's unheard of on this level. IF we put that under Frans nose years ago 6 years ago, he'd still be here.

Let's see who they get and what he can do. If he does well and they have a lot of cash, then good for them if they move up. But got to win first. They haven't done that yet.

Some thought on this thread I may be wrong so correct if I am
Q stated for certain coach's they would pay up to 800k, not just anybody
As indian82 stated they got the cash let them use it. IMO both Q and Monmouth are using the MAAC as a stepping stone to the next level, and Monmouth well on its way, look at the entire body of work of athletics at both schools, up and coming in relation to where they started in the MAAC
people throwing $ around for compensation for the assistants. Like anyone else I like conjecture but do we really know what the school has budgeted? If we do great what is it. On that path what is JP compensation, somewhat exact, not the general number thrown about, just wondering.
keep up the posts entertaining and informative.

I always say facilities do not win championships, people win championships. But Quinny is making a step in the right direction. Long way to go, how about winning any sort of title first.

The 990 are public info so you can grab later ones once they are available. www.nycbuckets.com/head-coach-contract-tracker/Check out rhode islands contract in the above link. Base is 300k, but guaranteed perks bring the total comp to 600k to 700k. The assistant pool is 375k. There was even a clause to get out of a deal with adidas so coach could use his own shoe company. The termination guarantee started at 300k and slides down to nothing in the final two years of the agreement which currently ends in 2020.

Siena was paying Fran around 600K and it was an 8 year contract so they made a strong effort to retain him. Quinnipiac will not be able to keep a successful coach from a BCS job either. If they pick a lemon they are screwed playing that much money.

Give a good base but not a comfortable set for life base and provide opportunity to make much more than the coach could make with the highest level base the school could pay. That way if the school ends up paying the coach mucho deniro they can and don't mind due to the success he's lead the program to achieve.

If they pick a lemon they are screwed playing that much money. They have triple the enrollment and triple the endowment. In theory, paying 900k a year vs. our 300k a year...seems pretty feasible to me...without that much pain. Siena's biggest 'failure' is the fact that it's not growing fast enough. Without masters programs or other major programs, they are falling behind educationally. They've chosen to stay small. That has pluses and minuses. Quinny is growing.

Monmouth has an arena but their endowment is less than Siena's. They have more students but I'd pick Quinny to jump first. Their campus also has a lot of physical growth potential if I remember correctly. They could expand and expand.

In order to effective compete, let alone move-up to a higher conference, Siena needs more $$$. More $$$ comes from: 1. more donations
2. more students to spread the cost; or
3. higher tuition
I commend the Franciscans for trying to keep tuition affordable, but they need to take their 5 year plan and circulate it among alumni and friends of the College.
I know it is easy to talk a good game plan, but the reality is the feasibility to implement it.
Siena has the capacity to, and IMHO, should expand when properties surrounding the campus becomes available.
I also think that they should attempt to add graduate programs.
Their goal of becoming a Davidson like school are severely limited.
They have to compete with the likes of Fairfield, Quinnipiac, etc.
They are now behind those schools and the gap is getting wider. When and if the socialist Democraps , who own NY, make tuition free at state schools, Siena is bound to lose some applicants as well.
Siena might have made (assuming that they had the chance to begin with ) of not joining the A-10, as it's apparent that they don't have the financial resources. However, that doesn't excuse the Administration's ( Fr Kevin's or D'Arg, or both ) hire of "never was/never will be " men's basketball coaches. When Fran left Siena was in a prime position to hire a good to excellent high-major assistant , with a proven recruiting track record
Despite Quinny's A + physical resources, Siena's lease of TUC, fan base and regional PR, still far surpassed Quinny.
Siena is severely,( IMHO) held back by Title IX, and lack of a larger campus . Loudonville is a beautiful town, but it's homeowners ( rightfully so) are afraid of a Siena expansion, just see litigation over town houses, lacrosse field lighting , etc.).
Will Colonie eventually sell its municipal building to Siena, allowing a further expansion of the campus.
Siena needs to attract more big bucks donors. Fairfield, and to a lesser extent Quinny , have alumni , in areas where incomes are higher than the CD, and it is more tax efficient to donate.
I love, but question, the ambitiousness and business savy of the Franciscans.
Siena needs to shift control to private individuals while retaining the Franciscan character and values of Siena.
Time will tell.

Loudonville exists to serve Siena College. Get out of the way or die....of guilt because of your Franciscan values silly.

I think the campus has improved tremendously since I have been a student- the sidewalk to the plaza down on Route 9 is a nice addition- we used to call that walk of shame since freshmen were not allowed to have cars. Dorms (Ryan, Hennepin, Hines, Plassmann) need to be rebuild from what I've heard. They should really do online programs for Masters. A lot of Siena students want to stay after they graduate.
