Because Siena College hasn't been ascribing to it for 'decades'.....only since St. Fran raised expectations. Again, just MHO.

Bringing a great student athlete in that would succeed anywhere and having a great team GPA? Or bringing a kid in from the inner city and getting him a degree that he can use for the rest of his life but might hurt the team GPA a little?

Graduation success has always been the prime driver at Siena, to suggest otherwise is ludicrous. Solid team GPA statistics are a good measure of the academics at the school and an indicator of the importance of academics as well as athletics. Team GPA can be boosted as it includes walk-ons unlike the GSR (Graduation Success Rate) which only includes scholarship athletes. The GPA is FIO while the GSR has penalties attached.

Nice post MP. Thoughtful and reflective of your true feelings about Siena Hoop. Even nicer to read a post from you that is not based on your dislike for the Coach. You are not a hater, I agree. You are more enjoyable as a positive leader on this board.

The pressure to win basketball games has been here for a long time. Long before we ever heard of Fran. John kirch started Siena up the mountain...Mike Deane continued the climb...we had Hewitt and Fran...we had a few bumps in the road...but the program was always growing that is why we were a place where ambitious young coaches wanted. The past six years have have pulled the plug on the program. Yes..we did win the CBI and we did win 20 games this year but we are now a status quo program...we are no longer a mid major the big boys will not play because they respect us...now they just don't want their rpi damaged. Wins are nice but they come from lower ranked programs...wins we should get...yes we did beat the bonnies...but we need something to really get the program going up the mountain again....maybe a win over the Jayhawks... Sorry about the rambling but it is off season...

You should know that when Jamal Jackson was here ( a JUCO transfer inner city kid who struggled academically) I supported him in every way possible. I nurtured, I fed him, I tutored him as did other members of my family. To this day he will not wear a do rag in my presence as I taught him we weren't in the hood. He never used his cell phone in my home when eating a meal in cooked for him because I told him that was disrespectful. He had no parents or siblings that weren't in jail or dead from drug abuse when he came to Siena. He graduated. He works with youth in New Jersey Boys and Girls clubs as a bball program admin. I hear frome him every holiday and birthday. That is Siena to me.

But you are kidding yourself if you think this hasn't been going on at Siena for a very long time. I was there in the mid/late 80s and it was definitely happening when I first arrived, while I was there and after I left. A case can be made for both sides of this equation and personally I am not sure which one is correct. The answer most likely lies somewhere in the middle. All that being said, don't kid yourself that this is something new.

But to me, a story like Jamal Jackson is a far bigger accomplishment than bringing in a good kid like Cam Gottfried who was going to succeed academically no matter where he went. I'm hoping that Jimmy's abrasive style can help some kids that need it and I have no problem bringing a few kids in that are academic risks since I do feel like Jimmy will stay on top of it.

So be it. I also get that it's getting more and more and difficult to recruit ANY student at 45K per year to a bachelor's degree regardless. It just seems as though there can be more to recruits than just basketball.
Interestingly Vann's mother is a high school coach and English teacher...

GPA and GSR are important, but if you want a winning program on a consistent basis it can't be the most important part of program. Not every player is going to graduate, staying eligible and helping the team win championships is just as important sometimes.

True, but they do have to leave in good academic standing to not adversely impact the GSR - I'm talking about the non-runoff early, unanticipated transfers that seem to be the new norm here at big time Siena!

Don't think he's getting a ton of interest, but would be curious if the staff reached out to Sammy Mojica.
