Why is it that if one doesn't believe in the warming that isn't happening that we by default get put in the category of strip miner? I can be pro-environment but not believe we should be wasting time on CO2 emissions. For the record I'm pro-nuke. That happens to be a zero CO2 solution but I'm pro nuke because it is the best overall solution. The new tech is melt-down proof and takes up a much smaller footprint than prior reactors. Additionally, the waste produced is less in volume and less radioactive. It isn't perfect but is reliable and produces ample power at the best price. This sure seems like a good choice. There's still material that has to be disposed of. This is what we should devote more money to. This is the alternate energy of the future. www.cnn.com/2014/02/12/tech/innovation/energy-fusion/www.llnl.gov/news/aroundthelab/2014/Feb/NR-14-02-06.html#.U3C6WfldWSp

Additionally, the waste produced is less in volume and less radioactive. It isn't perfect but is reliable and produces ample power at the best price. This sure seems like a good choice. I don't believe efforts to reduce CO2 emission is a waste of time. I believe we have seen the benefits of reductions made to date and have no doubt that further reductions will help reduce or mitigate its impact as economies grow and emissions increase unchecked in other countries. I too am pro nuke - worked designing and building them for the Navy for almost 40 years. Unfortunately, we in the nuclear industry have done a piss poor job of educating the public on nuclear energy and its very, very safe use. The Naval Nuclear program has a perfect safety record and the US commercial side has also a similar record. Nuclear reactors do not explode like a nuclear weapon but many believe that to be possible. We let the press inflate Three Mile Island into the status of disaster - a couple of hundred potential extra cancer cases somehow became more catastrophic than the single loss of hundreds of lives in an airplane crash - we don't shut down that industry following the loss of a plane! Nuclear plant construction in areas that are relatively free of earthquakes and utilization of earthquake safe construction techniques coupled with emergency cooling and well trained operating personnel would provide a very safe and economic source of electricity with no carbon emissions and environmental impacts. The problems with nuclear plant siting is the age old 'not in my backyard' argument - give me the power but build your plant in another locale far from my home! Also, the problem with spent fuel waste has yet to be adequately solved. Following my retirement, I consulted on the cleanup of the Maine Yankee Plant in Wiscasset, Maine. We decommissioned the plant and cleared the plant's footprint of all residual environmental concerns. However, the spent fuel is still stored in safe repositories on that site in perpetuity!!!! The failure of the Feds to open Yucca Mtn, after years and years of debate, $'s and opposition, spent fuel sits all over the country awaiting some future action to enable storage at one central, safe and secure facility.

MP - we can agree to disagree on CO2. We agree on the nukes so that's a good start. Aside from the NIMBY problem is the fact that the eco-lobby has a strangle hold on the nuke industry. Nuke plants aren't even being licensed. This is complete BS. I swear these loons want us to go back to living in straw huts. The new reactors are very safe. The old "melt down" problems have been resolved.
Heck, with the new tech we could even have a much more efficient grid. We lose 60% of the power during transmission. If we built nukes in areas where needed (albeit population centers) it would go a loooong way to increasing overall efficiency and make for a robust grid too. Closing Indian Point makes no sense to me - unless the goal is to increase electric rates in NYS to make alternate energy more competitive.

The greenies won't agree to anything and they walk lockstep with the dems. More windmills to shred eagles? Solar panels? Coal? Nukes? Fracking? What's an acceptable alternative?

Solar and Wind are the 2 biggies...even though the windmills kill birds. Apparently that's acceptable.
