Please upstate.. nobody is singling you out,, lets keep our comments about the kids above board-- if there is anything worse than a tattle tale--its a mean nasty tattle tale I said he doesn't make an effort on defense. It's been said about 10,000 times on this board and it's said on every broadcast of a Siena game. I'm sure he's a fine young man and great student.

I said he doesn't make an effort on defense.; Let go of the past upstate-- that was under a previous coach who's name I wont mention. Jimmy has said if you dont play defense you wont play for him- Wont you even give Evan a chance under a new coach? That's all I ask is keep an open mind.

In fact, I think the team is much better than most of you do. I think Hymes can have a solid role for the team, off the bench, playing a Tay Fisher/ Mike Beers role. I just don't expect his defense to change.

Hymes is a better all around player than either Fisher or Beers. As long as he can get used to playing off the ball, he should have a very good year.

Hymes can be a good player off the bench as a 6th man if he buys into his role and improves his defense and turnovers. There is no way he will play 35 minutes a game. I'd say 20-23 MPG something like that. He is lightening quick and can shoot the ball from long-range. Now we will see if it was the system or players. The returning guys have a chance to prove themselves with a real coach in a real system.

Have you read reports on scrimmages all over the country and what coaches at all levels are saying about the impact of the new rules? Quick players who can shoot the three will thrive under these rules and the way the game is played. Just do not understand why some on this board want to put a limit and/or just blow off Hymes when he might be the best impact player on offense.

Hymes is a posterchild of an era that was unsuccessful. Everyone wants the "new" and are focusing on the players Jimmy has brought in.
But people are also forgetting that the system Hymes was forced to run was exactly the type of system that opposing teams would want us to run with a guy like him. Hymes was not "set loose." He couldn't run. He couldn't press. The offense didn't get him shots from 22 ft and in. He had to get shots for himself and ALWAYS in a halfcourt setting. Plus, his assist ratio was more of a "team stat" because of our offensive game plan. You don't get assists on Anosike scores. And when Hymes had the ball teams tried to double him, often with the other guards not coming to the ball to aid him...leaving him in retreat having to try to break the double himself or make a long pass over 2 taller defenders.
Sure, there are times when he should have made a bounce pass instead and it resulted in a turnover. But most of his turnovers and/or lack of assists were based on the system.
As far as defense, he's the fastest kid in the league and we didn't press. That's it. I'm pretty sure can get 40 steals with his speed under Jimmy. That was good enough for 10th in the MAAC last year. He had 36 steals as a frosh.
He's short and it makes him a target for the losses.
Should he play 35 mins a game? Maybe not if we want to keep him fresh but 30? Sure. Evan Hymes is a playmaker and arguably the fastest kid in the league on a team whose gameplan is now to run and press. Match made in heaven.

There still is a lot of predisposed negativity about some of our returning players. Those feelings should be put on the shelf or held in check until we see those players executing under Jimmy's offense and defense. Give them the chance they deserve. Evan should do well under Jimmy but he has to learn to play Jimmy's game and not his own. He is a bit behind the rest of the team due to having to stand on the sidelines during two back to back broken hand injuries. His conditioning is where it should be (he voluntarily ran every single suicide that Jimmy called even when he was not a part of the reason for it - that's a solid team player) but his execution is a little rusty and at times on Tuesday he seemed to force issues, no doubt trying to regain lost stature but resulting in some "help" from the HC. He is no longer the stick that stirs the drink, rather he is one of the ingredients and the recipe for how much Evan each game is up to the Master Bartender on the sidelines. As Tony put it, if his defense isn't there or if his offense is OOC he'll be sitting.

For what it's worth, he was the most efficient offensive guard over the 1st 2 games in Montreal.

I think some are forgetting his freshman performance. I think hymes will finish his career at Siena and be remembered as a very good player.

Do not forget that the team only had two "full" practices (Maurice White was not yet in the playing mix) before the Montreal games. Before that it was informal pickup and 4 man conditioning sessions. A lot of water has gone over the dam since Montreal and Evan has had to watch. The Montreal trip was a little bit of "show me what you've got" in Jimmy's eyes, IMHO. Evan will be fine, just see him at more of a 15-20 mpg clip unless something drastic happens to the lineup.
