Most coaches know basketball, but some can effectively communicate it to others and succeed in directing a basketball program , others not so much. This guy seems to have both qualities. Good hire.

He and the current AD (Murray) were assistants under Magarity 20 years ago. He's been in the NBA a longgg time. Not sure how well he'll adapt back to the college game.
Seems like more of a buddy hire more than a talented up-and-comer assistant who could take Marist to the top of the MAAC.

This sounds like Marist treating one of their own who needed a job but probably isn't really qualified to coach type of deal.
Bower has a nice roster to work with, for now.

This is the guy we were supposed to be stunned by? A guy who hasn't recruited or coached college kids in 20 years? If that was a Siena hire I'd be terrified. Marist needs wins as bad, if not worse, than Siena. Good luck to him but I'd be shocked if he is successful.

Or was he on campus, and formally interviewed? My guess is the former, and Evans never really was considered. This is why this is perceived as "buddy hire." IF Siena made this hire, what do you think the reaction would be? We all know, and Marist should be as picky as Siena, but they seemed to take the easy way out. Murray must feel very secure in his job to take this route.

Yankee, in an earlier post you inferred that Marist was about to make some big news with its hire. THIS was the guy?

I don't expect people to be mensa level on any board. Obviously I am nowhere near that. But, can we at least have some common sense? Do you honestly think Marist made this hire as a courtesy move to a buddy of the AD? Can we show some respect to president and AD of Marist, to the selection committee and the coach who was hired? You act as if he has not been involved in basketball for 20 years. Please use some more common sense, I beg this of you. Evans was on campus and was formally interviewed. You can even research this through Norfolk States message boards and local papers. Common sense please in the future.

Glad to see there was that much interest in the job. Do I think Bower got the job because he and Murray worked together for 9 years and still remain closee friends? Y-E-S. Yes, he's a good basketball man. So is Phil Jackson, but I wouldn't want him coaching my mid-major college team. Good luck though, I'm off to study up for the mensa exam

I say good luck to Marist going forward in the MAAC- time will tell how good a hire Bower is.

Y: I wasn't trying to be "snide", but from your posts I took you were thinking much bigger that this guy. Like a Hurley or someone like that.
