I have to say Yankee this hire would have me scared if I were you. Anyone involved at the D1 level knows basketball. Mitch clearly "knows basketball". He was a horrible coach. Dealing with college kids is way different than the pros. I would be concerned about Bower's ability to relate to young guys who need a father figure more than a boss.

Maybe I walk to the beat of a different drum but I would like all of our league members to do well(whatever league we are in). I want them to be great teams but just one step behind Siena.I always liked it when we beat quality teams and it was great to beat Marist when they had Schmitt (sp) or their other good teams. I wish them good luck with their new coach. If he is a good coach it will only help us.

I agree on Coach Bower... but are we sure thats the correct spelling of his name, I could have sworn there was a L after the B in coach Bower

Fair asessment from a non-marist fan. However I have followed his career since the Smits years. I have heard him speak. Trust me, he is not like Mitch, awkward and such. His organizational skills obviously are top notch, and I have seen him on the sidelines. Sometimes you can just see a leader, to me he is one. Plus he has roots here. It is the perfect fit. Why would you consider Hurley a better hire, the name? He has only been an assistant under his brother.

He and the current AD (Murray) were assistants under Magarity 20 years ago. He's been in the NBA a longgg time. Not sure how well he'll adapt back to the college game. Seems like more of a buddy hire more than a talented up-and-comer assistant who could take Marist to the top of the MAAC. Not pile on, but this should be helpful in you seeing there are good reasons he was hired at Marist. Please check out this quote: Ahem, let me clear my throat. "Jeff is a brilliant basketball coach who has held every conceivable job in the NBA, which makes him an astute hire for Marist College," said NBA analyst and former Knicks and Houston Rockets head coach Jeff Van Gundy. "His background is unique, but I don't think he has ever forgotten his roots at Marist. I think he's going to combine the knowledge he gathered in the NBA with his passion for Marist College, and make them a perennial contender in the MAAC."

Everyone is great, no one is bad. We get it. Been out the college game for 20 years. Better hire some AAU (thats where the kids play in the summer guys quick so Jeff gets back up to speed. ps--someone let him know the shot clock is 35 sec, not 24 too

Not for nothing, but if he's such a stud NBA veteran, why is he coaching at Marist instead of in the NBA or at least a high-major school if college is his thing now?

He has been up for a couple GM jobs in past couple seasons, finished as runner up. Has been consulting and doing amateur scouting I believe for Mavericks the past year. He has roots at Marist, met his wife at Marist, has family in the area and has made a ton of money. This could be the perfect situation as when he is successful, he may actually stay.

No one is saying it's not great for him, it is!! lol The question is the right guy for a college program restoration?? If Siena hired Phil Jackson, I wouldn't like it. See where I'm coming from?

Marist is not a basketball school- all he has to do , is finish around 500 most years , graduate his players and Marist will erect a statue of him

Yes, you are correct. They are a up and coming college who has a great academic and overall athletic department. Thanks for noticing:). Now, if you want Siena to be termed a "basketball school", I am sure the president of the college will just be thrilled sir.

I see, so he was more a GM candidate than a coach in the NBA. When was he last a coach? I'm not seeing why his candidacy was such a secret and what leads you to believe he's a game changer, but I like that Marist thought outside the box a bit here instead of just going with another assistant. Good luck with him. I think almost anyone is an improvement over Martin, who was truly dreadful.

Stop being silly...this isn't the MAAC attack board..save that crap for the whacks over there. You know exactly what I'm talking about - Siena makes Money off the basketball team and the men's team is an important part of the strategic plan. Men's basketball isn't as important at Marist- and if it is- they made a very risky hire

Does he have a staff lined up yet? I like this hire for Marist..it is refreshing and bold for them. He needs a strong recruiting assistant to sell marist, poughtown and the maac though. Most kids wont recognize the name right away but Im sure once they learn he coached and was a GM in the league, he'll earn some respect from them. Still not sure about how he bench coaches though. As a NBA guy who is going down to this level and doesnt care much about money, seems like a "bring in talent and just let them play" game coach. Good PR, good resume though
