Donald Copeland is hungry to win. I have been impressed with him. Don't think Siena can afford to make that hire. If Gerry McNamara leaves his $800k per year job for a $400k per year job, I'd would seriously question his judgment - especially with a family of six. I don't expect any of you state employee hacks that made $40k per year for 30 years or make $70k per year today to understand the difference between $400k and $800k when you have a family of 6. If Copeland is so hungry to win he may need to break 500 with his NEC schedule first. That’s a big red flag for such a weak conference. If he’s hired I don’t see a lot of renewals or much excitement being generated. He may turn out fine but i think he needs more time at in the NEC to see his true potential and trajectory.

Soup is exactly right. “If he didn’t want to take the pay cut”? That’s hysterical. Who would take a pay cut like that? Every person hired by Siena as a head coach made more not less than their previous position. Would you take a pay cut to prove your worth at a new job, knowing you lost your previous one that paid allegedly double? 25 years ago I left a 100k+ job for a 30% pay cut because I saw the opportunity with the new company. I’ll just say it it worked out pretty good. Those numbers are not even close, even with today’s dollars with Bidenomics. And you are comparing apples to oranges. You made one move that you thought would improve your income potential. Worlds apart from the Syracuse hypothetical. Which would require at least two. You made a logical incremental move that many if not most do in a lifetime.

You're okay with Mike Deane only being a HC at D-3 Oswego for 2 years(24-26), but not okay with McNamara coaching 15 years in the Big East making all kinds of recruiting connections in the process? So if GMac was the HC at Oneonta for 2 years, you'd feel better about him? To be fair Deane was also the top assistant at Michigan St Everyone knows that. '77 had a problem with GMac not having any HC'ing experience. My point is, did Deane coaching a SUNY D-3 school, and not going .500 in 2 years, make him a more attractive candidate than McNamara is now?

These are two good candidates. I like the names that are coming out. I would be floored if we got Murray. The amount we'd probably have to pay for him alone would show the fans the school cares about winning.

I would like someone with some head coaching experience in the bench. Hey Tobin has been head coach at Hamilton before he joined us. Ans being back Harley Fuller to help recruit and he has some head coaching experience

I’m not opposed to Copeland- I wish his NEC record were better but that league has become such a mess it’s hard to hold that against him. It’s not really worth arguing but Gmac going to Siena would be an investment in himself. He’d take less money to eventually get a HC job for 1.5 or 2 million elsewhere after he succeeds at Siena- I assume that would be his angle. There’s risk in doing it but there’s also risk in sitting on Autry’s staff and potentially getting fired in 3 years. I highly doubt Siena can come close to his SU salary if it is in fact 700-800k.

If his career is stagnating and Syracuse continues to struggle he may be weighing career limitations against his career aspirations and banking on believing in his ability to succeed as a HC and parlay that into a bigger payday. Sometimes it’s risk vs reward. It’s basically how this country was built. Nothing ventured, nothing gained!!! Ben Franklin

Again this another case that’s more about wanting to be a headcoach and the long game.

I dont see GMac settling on being the new Bernie Fine at Syracuse.
Doing his own thing and proving he can run, and win, his own program, is why he'll come to Siena. As of now, he'll always feel second best because he was passed over for the head job.
And Id love to see his W-2 saying he makes $800K a year at Syracuse.
Make no mistake, he plans on being here 4-5 years. He's got no plans to stay here forever. Like every assistant at a P5, you have to take a step back in salary to get the keys to your own MM program. THEN you hit the jackpot if the bet you made on yourself hits.

I guess I am reading between the lines, but I don't think it is a stretch to say JB didn't make his comments unsolicited or after being in contact with GMac to discuss the Siena job. That leads me to believe that GMac would be open to considering the position. GMac and JB know Siena can't match his SU salary so it is a matter of what type of cut he is willing to take to get that HC experience on his resume. Siena needs a hire that excites the fan base and retains and grows the season ticket base, so Siena has to make the best offer they can afford. We'll see what happens in the negotiation process with either GMac or Murray.

I’d venture to say the move I made, with a non working spouse, and kids, was a lot riskier than having to figure out a way to scrape by in Albany on $400k. Like I said, if he isn’t willing to bet on himself and take the risk, I don’t want him, anyway. Nobody is going to offer him a Power 5 job from his current role. So if he wants a shot at the big time, he is going to have to make that kind of move at some point. What better place than somewhere that has proven to be a springboard to bigger opportunities, and coming off a 4 win season?

I don’t think leaving a little money on the table is a deal breaker for someone who wants to be a head coach. Siena doesn’t need to pay big initially but rather if the coach is successful to raise his pay to keep out all but the big boys.

Imo if we can pull off Gmac or Murray it’s a coup, especially considering our trackrecord over the last 14 years. Let’s be honest this program is currently on life support.
Gmac and Murray are high profile, both have substantial recruiting ties, both have instant name recognition, both will generate a buzz around the program, both will enhance brand recognition, both will generate press and both come with the ability to generate outside revenue to fund NIL initiatives and investments. These are all attributes you are not going to get with low major coaches from weak conferences or D2 guys looking to move up.
It’s no secret I’ve generally favored high major assistants and I understand nothing is a guarantee but to me this checks just about every box. If we can somehow add Will or an assistant with prior HC experience as an assistant it’s almost as perfect as you could hope to get.
