I’d be happy with giving GMac a shot as the next head coach. The name recognition alone would generate some interest and excitement for Siena basketball. It’s certainly clear that he wants the job and JB is pining for him. I understand some concerns that he’s never been a head coach, but the guy has certainly paid his dues as an assistant. Is he a leader? In my opinion, yes. He proved it on the basketball court. Siena’s basketball program has already hit rock bottom. It’s time for a bold move. I don’t like “safe” choices. Siena already blew a once in a lifetime opportunity with Pitino. I hope they’ve learned from their safe picks over the last 14 years. Good post!

GMac coaches the guards at 'Cuse. They have had several good ones since he's been there. He has a lot of connections he can tap into to recruit. The MAAC is a guards league. We can and have done worse.

I heard they were supposed to have 5-7 names yesterday to focus on and Gallo and Copeland might be on the list Not a Copeland fan at all. Well under 500 in the NEC and just 500 over all. Made the NCAA this year by winning the tournament but the NEC is garbage. He also had a worse reg season this year compared to last. He’s a hard pass for me, I’d prefer Robert Jones getting an interview over Copeland. I hope Fee made the list but I think he’s headed to UDM.

Yes and have him bring Justin Taylor and Peter Carey with him.

To be fair Deane was also the top assistant at Michigan St Deane and Izzo were both assistants under Heathcote. Speaking of Izzo, did anyone see that he came out the other day and said there shouldn’t be automatic bids to mid major conferences? Would rather have more power conf schools in! Asshole.

Donald Copeland is hungry to win. I have been impressed with him. Don't think Siena can afford to make that hire.
If Gerry McNamara leaves his $800k per year job for a $400k per year job, I'd would seriously question his judgment - especially with a family of six. I don't expect any of you state employee hacks that made $40k per year for 30 years or make $70k per year today to understand the difference between $400k and $800k when you have a family of 6.

Yup, and he wants old retired coaches to form the selection committee and pick on their instincts instead of these non-basketball guys using analytics. Lost all respect for him from that interview.

This is certainly a tough crowd. Siena is in with two Associate HCs from P6 schools both with the possibility of having some NIL $$ to play with and recruiting connections with higher level programs/players and people are nit-picking about head coaching experience and coaching tree pedigree.

No need for the personal attacks. What you don’t understand is he isn’t taking the job to stay here, he would be taking it with his belief in 3 years he is at a P5 job and in 1 year he will make up the lost income for those 3 prior years. It’s an investment in his future and if he didn’t want to take the pay cut I wouldn’t want him because it says he doesn’t trust in his ability.

The automatic bids and the upsets is what makes the tournament the TOURNAMENT. IMO

If someone can’t raise a family for 6 on $300k-$400k a year; they’re not smart enough to coach Siena basketball and I don’t want them!!! I’m pretty sure GMac is smart enough to be able to survive on what ever Siena pays him until he move onto bigger/better jobs (hopefully 4-5 years down the road).

Soup is exactly right. “If he didn’t want to take the pay cut”? That’s hysterical. Who would take a pay cut like that? Every person hired by Siena as a head coach made more not less than their previous position. Would you take a pay cut to prove your worth at a new job, knowing you lost your previous one that paid allegedly double?

Living in Syracuse with an income of $800K puts you in an extremely comfortable situation. Most family men in that position would be investing a very sizeable amount and living on the remainder very comfortably. So to take a pay cut to something close to what you are currently living on to advance your career may not as hard as it would seem.

I’ll just say it it worked out pretty good.
