Based on numbers someone else posted I don't think any coach with this kind of record who was brought back actually kept their job for long. It has been a downward trend. One has to assume he was trying to win for 5 years and hasn't been able to. Now, all of a sudden, he's going to have a championship team? All year he's been saying he's got the guys for a championship. 4-28 isn't a championship From 1996-97 through 2022-23, 122 teams won four or fewer games with at least 25 losses. 20 of those had a coach at least five seasons with that school and zero NCAA Tournament appearances there. Of those 20, five coaches returned to that program the following year. Dereck Whittenburg: 3-25 at Fordham in 2008-09. Whittenburg returned to start 1-4 in 2009-10 before being fired and replaced by Jared Grasso. Frankie Allen: 2-26 at Maryland-Eastern Shore in 2012-13. Allen was fired the following season after going 6-24. Tracy Dildy: 4-28 at Chicago State in 2015-16. Dildy went 6-26 in 2016-17 and 3-29 in 2017-18 before being fired. Glenn Braica: 4-27 at St. Francis Brooklyn in 2016-17. Braica continued coaching until the school eliminated D-I athletics in spring 2023. Ron Cottrell: 4-25 at Houston Christian in 2019-20. Cottrell is still the head coach, going 35-82 in the 4 seasons since. Now that we finished 4-28, there were 33 teams from 1996-97 through 2022-23 that won four or fewer games with at least 28 losses. Five of those had coaches at least 5 years in. Two of those coaches returned the following year. Wayne Tinkle: 3-28 at Oregon State in 2021-22. Tinkle is still at ORST, going 11-21 in 2022-23 and 13-18 this season. Tinkle does have two NCAA Tournament appearances at ORST, 2016 and 2021. He reached the Elite 8 in 2021, the season directly preceding his 3-28 campaign. Tracy Dildy: 4-28 at Chicago State in 2015-16 (see above). Dildy was also the Athletic Director, Chicago State has one winning season since 1987, and has regularly been without a conference affiliation (including now). Clearly they are not a serious program, but that is the type of company we are in at the moment.

Donating to the portal didn't pay any dividends this year, with this coach, so is that really a sound financial strategy? Will there be any bang for that buck?

Where does the NIL stand concerning Carm's future at Siena? Will they put out money for Carm's recruits or stand pat until this debacle is over with HC? GO SAINTS!!

Carm is back, really? Do season ticket holders get first dibs on seats at the ARC? Can we bring back the T-PEE Rowdies? This program is on life support. So many missed opportunities, mismanagement and now begins the death rattle.

I guess we know Siena doesn't take the men's basketball program seriously, especially if the buyout is one season instead of two. Because BBall is such a priority to me, I now know I don't have to take Siena seriously. No season tickets, no supporting sponsors, no merchandise, and no donations of any kind until Carm and D'Arg are gone. I wish it was different, but the only way to vote is with my dollars and Siena deserves less than zero.

This is bullsh!t. This assumes you just need talent and the wins follow. Don't get me wrong...you need talent, but college basketball is one of the sports where the coach makes a very real and tangible difference on a daily basis. Improving players, correcting bad habits, designing offense and defensive schemes, scouting, adjusting to the opponent, etc.
The above NIL comment makes it all about buying talent. You need both. Carm hasn't done sh!t to show that he can do anything with the talent once he has it.

The collective bought Carm players and they came off the bench in the MAAC Tournament so that walk-ons could start. In terms of Player Efficiency Rating, Carm started his 2nd, 6th, 10th, 12th, and 13th best players in a do or die MAAC Tournament game.

So our future as a MM is jucos and portal mercenaries, some of whom could be one and dones with us. That is as depressing as Carm staying.

Imagine a guy like Lanier hearing this news? In 4 years he got to the big dance, the NIT and had a bad 4th year. Gets fired. Wow.
People need to see past this 4-28 season. Id categorize the 2 years before this failures. Especially last year with the amount of talent and experience we had.
He stays, and this program will lose a significant amount of fans.

If this is accurate, just freed up a lot of money for me that will not go into the NIL or the season ticket base. I am through.

Siena will not make any announcement regarding Carm because he will return as coach. If they post a press release saying he will return it gives the impression they considered firing him. That will not happen, especially with the amount of talent he needs to recruit. Players don’t want to play for him now. Good luck getting anything with talent if 2025 recruits think he’s on the way out.
Siena having the money, but not wanting to part with it to buyout a contract are two different things. The school isn’t going to buyout Carm for $400K and pay someone else $350K to coach next season. Spending $750 K on head coaches next season – 400K to pay a person not to coach – several years after the school mandated a 10 percent pay cut for all employees to eliminate the school’s debt does not make for happy employees or good optics. A wealthy donor could buy out the contract. A wealthy alum/donor could endow the position, like the bigger P5 conferences do with their football coaches. But, do you think anyone is going to step forward with $300 to $400K per year with D’Argenio doing the hiring? Who would want their name associated with any of the previous hires since Fran left.'
Siena’s endowment is pretty solid compared to other schools in the MAAC. However, that doesn’t mean the BOT will use any of it on athletic programs. I am told the BOT is guarding that endowment like their daughter’s honor or prom night. Get used to hearing how Siena will be responsible financially, frugal, thrifty and down-right cheap in coming years with small private schools about to get hit with a drop in enrollment. Difficult decisions are on the horizon, from academics to athletics. If the BOT wants to start saving money, it is time to clean out that entire over paid athletic administration. The stench from the old men’s laziness while collecting really good paychecks permeates Rte. 9 and Spring Street in Loudonville. It’s been that way for years.
There are members of the BOT who would be perfectly fine if Siena dropped down to the Liberty League to play RPI, Union, Skidmore twice a year rather than play in the MAAC. D-3 athletics are a heck of a lot cheaper than D-1 athletics. These BOT members built their reputations being successful. They sure as hell aren’t going to risk that reputation with if the school falls into financial hardship. What happened to St. Rose literally scared the San Pellegrino out of the BOT. The group is paranoid about staying in the black financially and will not hesitate to make the decisions for that to happen.
Season-ticket holders will get a letter acknowledging a disappointing season and that members of the athletic department are going to roll up their sleeves to guarantee it doesn’t happen next season. Carm will talk about playing up-tempo (he will still try to win games 54-52 next season) a new recruiting strategy (maybe the staff leaves campus 2 days per open period rather than 1) and will focus on JUCOs and maybe 1 player from the portal. A better philosophy would be lighting daily candles at the Grotto to pray for at least Division I-caliber point guard who can handle the ball and doesn’t get beat 5 or 6 times per game on defense because of poor and sloppy footwork – crossing their feet while a quicker guard with the ball blows by them on the way to the basket.
And without change, next season will my seventh without a season ticket after the family had them every year starting when the ARC opened – when Kirsh coached and Brooks, Walters, Cahill, Holle and Smith knew how to play and win games.

Who is the moron that is behind this Twitter acct? Why would I give money to the NIL group when Carm is the one directing where that money should be spent and he has proven zero ability to assemble a roster that can compete for a championship? That’s like me voluntarily paying more in taxes then I have to in the hope that the government will put it to good use!
