I moved to south Carolina 10 years ago now. reason I moved was winter and taxes. cant do anything about winter but ny taxes make it impossible to stay there. I lived in Saratoga, had many write offs and still was paying close to 15000 dollars in ny state taxes. I have a 4 bedroom home, 2200 ft. attached garage and 2 new cars. I pay 468 dollars a year in total SC taxes that is 14500 dollar raise. that is why coaches that can leave for other jobs leave siena. I still follow the saints but it just isn't the same. I hope carm doe well. I remember him from his shen days.
he has to get at least one player from the capital district area a year.

Coaches who excel here leave Siena for bigger pay checks it has zero to do with tax burden and cost of living. I believe Jamion left here predominantly for family reasons. DC’s tax burden is about the same as NYS and cost of living in DC exceeds upstate NY by far. Look I’m not a fan of NYS’s government and tax structure but you’re way off base trying to draw a parallel between this program’s coaching vacancies and NYS taxes.

It really is too bad. It’s even worse for the people in nyc. South Carolina is a beautiful state. Not sure how long you will stay a low tax state. Many northerners move south and vote for more taxes - enjoy it while it lasts.

hiya gorvy,
been a while.
different brand of basketball down here.
emphasis is on 3 pointers. that means many games where the guards do the rebounding. and the bigs handle the ball on the outside. big guys are not afraid to take long shots and when they get the ball down low they are very good with hook shots.
hard to get kids to go up north to play.
south Carolina and coastal Carolina have won ncaa chamionships in baseball. Clemson in football. coastal Carolina is 8 miles from my house they get a lot of players into the majors. they are bigger than Syracuse. they have been in the ncaa basketball tournament 5 times since I have been here. would love to see them play siena
glad to see siena give carmen a shot

If I remember correctly, VA charged something like 5% annually or every two years the “value” of your car. If it wasn’t the state of VA’s tax it was the county you lived in. All those $50k new cars cost you $2,500 that first year. Basically, every state/county taxes you on something (be it income, house, property, etc). You just have to decide what you’re willing to pay and where you want to live (or vice versus).

Funny - the origin of this thread was "taxing" in itself and now it has morphed into a back and forth on taxes - LMAO! The move to a "red" state was a good choice - the recent Tax Reform (NOT) bill, greatly favors "red" states while, at the same time, punishing the "blue" states - rjdc's write off of $15K in NYS taxes would today be limited to $10K...

How's it punish blue states? It seems to me the blue states were getting a pass on their Federal taxes for years. TAX, TAX, TAX and write it off your Fed return! Time for blue states to take responsibility for their policies. Funny how blue states are loud and proud until someone calls them on their BS (see also sanctuary cities :-) NYS is a beautiful state. The lakes, mountains, ocean, etc. are fantastic. I'd live here forever...if I could afford it. The problem is that at some point I'll be on a fixed income but the property taxes for any place I'd like to end my days will undoubtedly force me out. Note: A cap on the increase isn't a cap. Many other states offer retirees significantly reduced taxes. If NYS did that I would surely stay. I don't see it happening.

And it’s official. We are off topic by a long shot.

Never discuss taxes or politics as it usually causes anxiety!

Average blue state tax deductions (SALT) are typically in the 15K range while in red states the SALT deductions typically average around $6.7K - the tax reform bill limited SALT deductions to $10K. There are many upper class folks (not me for sure) that pay way more SALT than 10K and itemize. I know your retort will be the increased standard deduction - but don't forget that the personal exemptions have gone bye bye and for families of 4 or more they also lose... OBTW, I agree NYS is a beautiful state and I have no complaints about our taxes and would not move because of them.

Many other states offer retirees significantly reduced taxes. If NYS did that I would surely stay. I don't see it happening. Blue states earned those deductions. They all subsidize the rest of the country by sending far more money to Washington than they get back. Meanwhile, most of the red states are the opposite - they receive far more than they contribute. And if you think it's just the small Podunk states like Mississippi, guess again. Florida is a big offender. The red state tax model is not self-sustaining. That's why they are reliant on federal subsidies - paid for by the rest of us. Also compare the rankings of the public school systems in blue vs. red states. Their schools are for the mostly part comparatively dreadful because their per student investment is a pittance. Lastly, call me when red states have mass transit systems anywhere near what most blue states have. You get what you pay for where public services are concerned. The only thing blue states are guilty of is charging for the realistic cost of government and the public services it provides. Are you watching the federal deficit balloon after last year's corporate tax cuts? It's not sustainable.

Here's an idea...let's trim gov't way back to their core (constitutional) mission - defense, immigration and commerce. Everyone gets to keep most of their money and the states can do as they please.
RE: Get what you pay for: I get squat for public services for the level of taxation in this state. Schools: True enough but there's a happy middle ground. NYS throws tons of money toward failing (mostly urban and rural) districts. How's that better? Fed deficit: We took in a record amount of tax revenue. The "cut" paid for itself as the economy took off. We are simply overspending...mostly on sh!t the Fed government shouldn't be involved in.
